Exterior wood filler: when a sill is safe to fill

Updated: October 2026

A split gate edge may need only a local repair; a soft window sill may be telling you that water has already damaged the timber beneath the paint. Exterior wood filler is appropriate only after you have found sound, dry wood and stopped the source of moisture. A waterproof when dry line describes the cured product, not the condition of the frame around it. This guide explains that boundary before you choose from the main [wood putty comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wood-putty). For ordinary indoor preparation, use [how to apply wood filler](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/wood-putty/sub/wood-putty-how-to-use); outside, diagnosis comes before filling.

Sound timber first, then filler

Remove loose paint and visibly crumbling wood until the edge of the proposed repair is clear. Firm timber resists and retains its shape; decayed wood feels spongy or powders away. Softness running through a rail, sill nose or joint changes the job. Find out why the area became wet. Filler placed over active moisture can trap the symptom while decay continues beside or behind it. Let the prepared area dry before applying any product. A retail bullet about repairing dry rot, or about rotten wood, is not a diagnosis of the building. If you cannot expose a firm boundary around the loss, ask a joiner to assess it.

What a ready-mixed exterior claim allows

Everbuild light stainable 250 ml is the only kept paste in this comparison with a clear interior-and-exterior claim and waterproof when dry wording. Its technical sheet still limits the multi-purpose product to 5 mm per coat. A shallow surface defect in a sound, prepared gate or trim can fit that use. A 20 mm loss from the nose of a sill does not become a one-coat repair merely because the tub says exterior. Outdoor temperature, humidity and the actual depth can extend drying. Weather protection is part of the application. Everbuild says a fresh exterior fill needs at least five hours' protection from rain and should not be applied below 5 °C. For product-type trade-offs before buying, see the wood filler buying guide.

Frames, sills and two-part filler

Everbuild's own sheet directs doors, window frames and holes deeper than 5 mm towards its high-performance two-part filler. That is a useful boundary: exposed joinery experiences movement, impact and repeated wetting that a small interior nail hole does not. A filler-and-hardener system can cure through a deeper mass and is easier to shape into a lost edge, although it must be mixed accurately and applied within its working time. Ronseal's High Performance Wood Filler, outside this ten-product set, is described for any depth, but an any-depth claim does not mean decayed timber should be replaced with resin. Minor local decay can sometimes be cut back to sound wood and rebuilt with two-part filler. A decayed rail end, open structural joint or large lost sill section may need a timber splice. The repaired profile must also shed water rather than forming a ledge.

When the tub is the wrong buy

Wax sticks are not an exterior decay repair. They do not provide a paint-ready structural rebuild, and rubbed-in wax should not be treated as weatherproof joinery. Keep those products for the furniture and laminate jobs covered in the wax versus filler guide. KwikWood's listing includes dry rot among its claimed uses, but its £4.03 price and listed one-hour cure do not turn it into a treatment for an active moisture problem. Stop buying tubs when the same area repeatedly cracks, when a screwdriver reaches deeply into soft wood, or when joints move under hand pressure. Once the timber is confirmed sound and the job genuinely local, compare the exterior-capable paste with the other job-specific options on which wood filler fits which job. The correct outcome may still be not to buy a product from this set.

Common questions

Can Everbuild Multi-Purpose go on a window sill?
The product claims interior and exterior use and waterproofing when dry, but its technical sheet limits one coat to 5 mm and directs doors and window frames towards the high-performance two-part filler. Use the ready-mixed paste only for an appropriate shallow repair in sound, dry timber, with the specified weather protection and finish.
What should happen before filling soft wood?
Expose the damaged area, identify and stop the moisture source, and remove unsound material until you reach a firm boundary. Allow the wood to dry. If softness extends through a joint or substantial section, ask a joiner whether a timber splice or replacement is required rather than sealing the surface with filler.
When is two-part filler the better choice?
Use a suitable two-part product when the maker directs it for deeper loss, exposed frames or impact-prone edges. It can cure through a larger mass than water-based paste, but it needs accurate mixing and sound timber around it. Large decay and structural loss can still require new timber.
Does a dry-rot claim mean the product treats the building?
No. A listing claim that epoxy can repair dry-rotted wood does not identify or eliminate fungal decay in a building. Moisture control and removal or specialist treatment of affected material come first. Use filler only for the local rebuild that remains after the underlying condition has been properly assessed.
How long should rain stay off a fresh repair?
Everbuild specifies at least five hours of rain protection for its exterior fill and says not to apply below 5 °C. Treat five hours as that product's minimum under suitable conditions, not a universal cure time. A deep fill, low temperature or damp air can require longer before finishing or exposure.
When should I call a joiner?
Call a joiner when softness extends over a wide area, a rail end or sill has lost significant section, a joint moves, or repeated filler repairs fail. Also seek help where the timber is structural or difficult to weatherproof. A local hard patch cannot compensate for a weakened assembly.
