The tins in this comparison

This set does not contain a matched pair of 5 litre white tins. Dulux is one product: Weathershield smooth white, ASIN B004RBIPUU, 7.5 litres, £32.52, 4.6 from 1,114 reviews, coverage up to 15.2 m² per litre, dry-time field 4 hours, waterproof and UV-resistant both true. The surface field says walls. Sandtex arrives as three listings. Ultra Smooth brilliant white, B005F7WDOY, is 2.5 litres at £15.95, 4.7 from 689, with a coverage field of 430.556 square feet. Microseal Smooth black, B00N4ZE4TQ, is 1 litre at £11.17, and its coverage field is “EO 1 m² per coat”. Fine textured Plymouth Grey, B01M2ZW7DO, is 5 litres at £29.90, and its 50–60 m² per litre rate is not one to plan on. Litres and consent sit on the masonry paint buying guide.

What Sandtex and Dulux say on their own pages

Sandtex’s UK smooth page quotes about 12–16 m² per litre, two coats, a recoat around 3–4 hours, and about 8°C. It excludes common, Fletton and engineering bricks. The 2026 colour guide puts fine textured at up to 6.5 m² per litre, against smooth at up to 16. Use 6.5, not the listing’s 50–60. Dulux’s consumer page says up to about 15 m² per litre, two coats, about 4 hours between coats, dry weather above 10°C, and no Fletton bricks. The 7.5 litre listing prints up to 15.2 m² per litre and does not print a 15-year line. Dulux Trade’s smooth sheet, not this ASIN, splits coverage to about 16 m² per litre on smooth render and 4–6 m² per litre on pebbledash. Keep the consumer 10°C line separate from the Trade 7°C line.

When to take which tin

Take the Dulux 7.5 litre tub when the wall is large, white, smooth or previously painted, and you want the lowest price per litre in this set. At about £4.34 it beats Sandtex Ultra Smooth’s £6.38. Take Sandtex Ultra Smooth for a pier, a sill run or a small brilliant-white elevation. Its higher star line is why it is the top pick on score. Take the 1 litre black Sandtex only for a small black job. Take fine textured Plymouth Grey only for that texture and that grey, and estimate from Sandtex’s 6.5 m² per litre guide figure, not from 50–60. On pebbledash, smooth paint can coat the stones, and the litres jump toward the Trade 4–6 m² per litre band on painting pebbledash. Both brands’ own pages exclude Fletton and common bricks.

What this page will not decide

Leyland Granocryl white is £15.17 for 2.5 litres, HQC’s colours are £54.95 for 5 litres, and Polar is £36.99 for 2.5 litres. None of those is a Sandtex or Dulux product. A magazine 15-year framing is not a measurement of these ASINs, and Fletton brick, a listed house or asbestos cement is not fixed by a logo. Who each white tin is for is best exterior masonry paint.

Common questions

Is Sandtex or Dulux Weathershield better?
For a large white wall in this set, Dulux’s 7.5 litre tub is the better buy on price per litre, about £4.34 against about £6.38 for Sandtex Ultra Smooth. For a small white area, Sandtex Ultra Smooth is the top pick on stars, 4.7 from 689 against Dulux’s 4.6 from 1,114. That is a pack decision. It is not a lab result, and it does not apply to Fletton bricks, which both makers exclude on their own pages.
Which Sandtex and Dulux tins are in this set?
Dulux is Weathershield smooth white, 7.5 litres, £32.52. Sandtex is Ultra Smooth brilliant white, 2.5 litres, £15.95; Microseal Smooth black, 1 litre, £11.17; and fine textured Plymouth Grey, 5 litres, £29.90. There is no 5 litre smooth white Sandtex and no 5 litre Dulux in the eight tins. Other shop sizes you see in blogs are not these listings.
Which covers more per litre?
On the listings, Dulux states up to 15.2 m² per litre. Sandtex Ultra Smooth states 430.556 square feet with no per-litre flag, and the black tin’s coverage string is not usable. Sandtex’s own smooth page says 12–16 m² per litre, which sits next to Dulux’s consumer “up to 15”. Fine textured is up to 6.5 m² per litre in Sandtex’s 2026 guide, not the 50–60 m² per litre on the amazon field. Pebbledash is lower again on Dulux Trade’s sheet.
Can either go on Fletton bricks?
No, according to the makers. Sandtex’s smooth page excludes common, Fletton and engineering bricks. Dulux’s consumer page and the Trade sheet exclude Fletton bricks, and the Trade sheet also says common bricks. The amazon bullets here often skip that sentence, and picking a logo does not remove it.
Is fine textured Sandtex the pebbledash tin?
It is the only textured tin in this set, not a requirement for pebbledash. Smooth masonry paint is the normal way to coat existing stones, and it still uses more litres than a smooth render. Plymouth Grey’s listing rate of 50–60 m² per litre would under-buy the job. Sandtex’s guide figure for fine textured is up to 6.5 m² per litre. Buy the textured tin for the texture and the grey, and count litres from the lower rate.
Do both claim 15 years?
Sandtex Ultra Smooth’s bullets claim 15 years, and Sandtex’s site does too, with conditions. Dulux’s consumer pages carry a long-life line that this 7.5 litre listing does not print. A brand-page claim is not a warranty these reviews have proved.
What if I want racing green or light grey instead?
Leave this page. HQC sells both colours here in 5 litre smooth tins at £54.95, with shared reviews and a stir-before-you-trust-the-shade problem. They are not a Sandtex or Dulux alternative on price per litre. The main comparison is where those two, Leyland and Polar are set out beside the white tins.
