Painting pebbledash

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have measured a pebbledash front as if it were flat render, and the tin will run out on the first coat. Painting pebbledash uses exterior masonry paint at a much lower coverage: Dulux Trade’s smooth Weathershield sheet, a Trade document rather than one amazon tin, quotes about 4–6 m² per litre on pebbledash against up to about 16 m² per litre on smooth render. A short-pile roller paints the stone tops and misses the gaps. Brand choice sits on the [facade paint comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/facade-paint). Why pebbledash drinks paint

A smooth coverage figure under-buys dash because you are coating around each stone, not across a plane. Dulux Trade’s smooth masonry sheet puts pebbledash at about 4–6 m² per litre per coat. The textured Trade sheet, not a tin here, goes to about 3–4 m² per litre. A 20 m² gable at 5 m² per litre is 4 litres for one coat and 8 litres for two. At 16 m² per litre those two coats look like 2.5 litres. How the litres change with the wall is in the masonry paint buying guide. Treat 4–6 m² per litre as a Trade guide, not a measurement of your house.

Smooth paint is the normal coating

Smooth exterior masonry paint coats the stones that are already there. The only fine-textured tin in this set is Sandtex Microseal Plymouth Grey, 5 litres at £29.90. Its listing says 50–60 m² per litre. Sandtex’s 2026 colour guide says fine textured up to 6.5 m² per litre. Ordering on the listing figure would under-buy the house. Estimate that grey from 6.5 m² per litre, not from 50–60. Buy a smooth white, such as the Dulux 7.5 litre tub or a 2.5 litre Sandtex or Leyland, to colour existing dash without adding texture. Dulux’s 7.5 litre listing only says walls. The pack split is Sandtex vs Dulux Weathershield.

Brush the gaps, then a long-pile roller

Work the paint into the hollows with a brush, then lay off with a long-pile roller so the nap reaches between the stones. A short pile wets the crowns and leaves the gaps. Decorators often talk about a pile around 20–25 mm, a practical range rather than a figure on these tins. Do not start by blasting the wall. A harsh washer knocks loose pebbles off. Brush off what is already detached, treat green growth, and let the dash dry. Stabilise only where the surface stays chalky. If you cannot tell dash from asbestos cement sheet, stop: the Health and Safety Executive’s a16 note rules out sanding and aggressive prep. The flat-wall sequence is how to paint exterior walls.

Which listings in this set name pebbledash

Polar WallGuard white, £36.99 for 2.5 litres, names pebbledash, but its coverage lines describe a 5 litre tin. Leyland Granocryl, £15.17 for 2.5 litres, lists it beside about 10 m² per litre, which looks like a smooth-wall rate. Both HQC colours, £54.95 for 5 litres, name it and state up to 6 m² per litre. Sandtex fine textured names brick, not pebbledash. Dulux’s 7.5 litre tub says walls only, so the 4–6 m² per litre figure is the Trade sheet, not that listing. None of the star ratings is a pebbledash trial.

Common questions

Can I paint pebbledash?
Yes, if the dash is sound, stuck, and free of live green growth. Use exterior masonry paint, not indoor emulsion, and expect to use more litres than the same area of smooth render. Loose pebbles should come off first, and hollow or failed render underneath is a repair, not a coat of paint. If you might be looking at asbestos cement sheet, do not scrub it.
Should I use smooth or textured paint?
Smooth masonry paint is the normal coating for existing pebbledash, because the texture is already on the wall. Textured paint changes the look and can be harder to work into the gaps. This set has one fine-textured tin, Sandtex Plymouth Grey. Choose it for that grey texture, not because dash requires a textured paint. A short-pile roller is a poor tool for either type.
How many square metres per litre on pebbledash?
Dulux Trade’s smooth Weathershield sheet says about 4–6 m² per litre on pebbledash, against up to about 16 m² on smooth render. Its textured Trade sheet says about 3–4 m² per litre on pebbledash. Sandtex’s 2026 guide puts fine textured at up to 6.5 m² per litre. Those are maker guides, per coat, and you still plan two coats. Do not plan a house on 50–60 m² per litre.
What roller do I need?
A long-pile roller, so the nap reaches the gaps, after you have brushed paint into the hollows and cut in the edges. Decorators often talk about a pile around 20–25 mm. That is a practical range, not a figure printed on these amazon listings. A short pile leaves the crowns shiny and the edges bare. Mask glass and pipes before you roll, because the pile throws speckles.
Do I have to stabilise pebbledash?
Only where the face stays powdery or chalky after you have brushed off the loose material. Sound dash takes masonry paint, not a sealer on every stone. Stabilising a hard surface can trap moisture. Green growth wants a fungicidal wash and a dry-down first. If whole areas of pebbles are detached, sticking them back or repairing the render comes before any primer decision.
Can I pressure-wash the stones?
A harsh wash knocks loose pebbles off and opens the dash. Prefer a brush and a gentle hose, then a fungicidal treatment if the wall is green, and let it dry. Do not pressure-wash if the surface might be asbestos cement. HSE a16 rules out aggressive prep on that sheet. Repair craters before you paint, or the new film will show every missing stone.
Which tins in this set mention pebbledash?
Polar WallGuard, Leyland Granocryl, and both HQC colours name it in the title or the surface list. Sandtex fine textured is the textured option and does not say pebbledash in the captured field. Dulux’s 7.5 litre listing says walls only, while Dulux Trade’s sheet is where the 4–6 m² per litre pebbledash rate is printed. Read the coverage line on the tin you buy before you treat any of them as a dash specialist.
