How to apply antique wax

Updated: 22 October 2026

You already have a tin and a pine door or a table, and you want to know how to apply antique wax so the surface hazes and then buffs. The wait is printed for the brand in your hand. Liberon Black Bison is about 20 minutes, Fiddes Supreme is about 3 minutes, and Colron refined beeswax is 15 minutes before you buff, with 2 hours before a second coat. Using the wrong clock is how a thin job becomes a streaky one. This page does not choose your shade. Prices are on the [antique wax comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/antique-wax). Clean and test before any colour

Dust the surface and take off grease, because wax will not level over polish residue. Work a hidden patch first and leave it for the maker’s time before you judge the colour. Antique pine reviews disagree about how dark two coats go, and rugger brown deepens with each coat. If the patch looks wrong, stop. Keep the first coat thin enough to haze. A loaded cloth on a whole door is the streak pattern Colron reviewers describe. Colron’s paste is a fluid cream, so set the tin on a board. Liberon suggests a cloth on delicate surfaces and 0000 wire wool only for a deeper bite on sound timber. Wire wool can cut a French polished film. Whether an early piece should be waxed at all sits on wax for antique furniture.

The wait depends on the tin

Follow the tin you bought. Liberon says about 20 minutes, then buff: a spare coat, not a thick one, and not in a kitchen or a bathroom. Fiddes says wipe with the grain, lift the excess straight away, and buff after about 3 minutes. Further coats deepen the colour. Colron’s data sheet says 15 minutes, then a second coat only after 2 hours, on untreated interior wood, and not over varnish or paint. A retailer line for Tableau is a few minutes. Buffing Liberon after 3 minutes wipes wet paste off. Open a window. When the haze looks dull, buff with a clean cotton cloth until it comes away without a wet smear. If paste still transfers, you used too much, or you started too soon.

Streaks, stickiness and water

A sticky film is almost always too much wax, or a wait borrowed from a different maker. Let that panel have the full time on the label, then buff hard with a clean cloth. If it stays tacky, a little white spirit on 0000 wire wool can lift a heavy film on a finish you want to keep. Do not reach for methylated spirits. Gilboys warn that meths can mark shellac. Do not tip residues down the sink. Spread solvent rags flat to dry, away from a flame. Water is a separate failure. One Black Bison reviewer varnished a dining table because the wax came off on cleaning cloths. Liberon excludes kitchens and bathrooms. Rustins excludes floors, outdoors, worktops and certified food contact for furniture Briwax. A sticky door in a dry hallway can be buffed back. A wet worktop cannot.

When the job is no longer a tin of wax

Stop when the surface is lifting, crazed, or soft under the cloth. French polish is a specialist film. Icon says it is not a weekend wax job. A flaking finish needs a restorer, not a tinted paste that will sit in the cracks. If preparation would mean stripping a coating that might date from before the 1970s, Colron’s notes flag a lead-paint risk. Veneer, inlay and gilding belong with a conservator. A second coat waits for that tin’s own gap. Colron says two hours. Fiddes expects further coats to deepen rugger brown, so do not stack them until the first has buffed. Shade choice sits on coloured wax or clear wax. Once a clean cloth stays dry, you are finished.

Common questions

How long do I wait before I buff?
Use the time for the brand you bought. Liberon Black Bison is about 20 minutes. Fiddes Supreme is about 3 minutes, and you lift the excess straight away. Colron is 15 minutes, then 2 hours before a second coat. Tableau is described by retailers as a few minutes. Buffing every tin at 20 minutes, or every tin at 3 minutes, is how the film goes wrong.
Can I use wire wool on a French polished surface?
Use a cloth if the surface might be French polished. Liberon allows 0000 wire wool for a deeper bite on sound wood and a cloth on delicate surfaces. Wire wool can cut a shellac film you meant to keep. If the finish is lifting or you are not sure what it is, stop and ask a restorer rather than scrubbing.
What if the wax dries streaky?
You put too much on, or you coated a large area before spreading it. Let the panel reach the maker’s time, then buff with a clean cloth. Heavy ridges can be lifted with a little white spirit, not with methylated spirits. Keep cream off the carpet at the bottom of a door.
How do I lift a sticky film?
Buff first with a clean cotton cloth after the full wait. If paste still transfers, use a small amount of white spirit and, on sound timber, 0000 wire wool, then buff again. Do not use meths on an old finish, and do not pour residues down the sink. Spread rags flat, away from a flame, until the solvent has gone.
When should I stop and call a restorer?
Stop if the finish is lifting, if you suspect French polish and the cloth is cutting through, if there is veneer, inlay or gilding, or if preparation would mean stripping paint that might contain lead. A tinted wax colours the damage and makes a later repair harder. A dry, sound interior door is still a home job if the coat stays thin.
