Antique wax polish: room before colour

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at bare pine doors, and every tin says antique. Antique wax polish here is a tinted or dark furniture paste, not a waterproof coating and not a clear beeswax for an early finish. The eight amazon.co.uk listings were read on 19 October 2026. Before a shade, decide whether the room stays dry, whether the wood is bare, and whether a small tin is a false economy. The [antique wax comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/antique-wax) holds the ASIN table and the prices. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the room, not the shade

Antique wax polish fails first in a place that gets wet. Liberon says Black Bison paste is not for kitchens and bathrooms. That covers both 500 ml antique pine listings and the small Georgian mahogany tin. Rustins says furniture Briwax is not for outside, floors, worktops or certified food contact, which sits against the teak tin at about £19.94 even though the bullets also name leather, metal and paint. Colron’s outdoor question is unanswered, and the floor question on Fiddes rugger brown is unanswered as well. A dry hallway door is a fair test. A table you wipe after meals is not.

Bare wood takes colour; a sealed finish may not

Colron’s data sheet says the refined beeswax does not go over varnish or paint. A varnished pine door is the wrong job for that tin. Fiddes Supreme is sold for bare or sealed wooden furniture, so antique brown and rugger brown can be considered for a tired table that already has a finish, as well as for sanded wood. Liberon allows wax over varnish, French polish or oil, so the brands do not agree. The tin in your hand wins, after a hidden patch. If the colour you already have is the one you want, a pigmented paste is the wrong tool. None of these eight ASINs is a clear unstained beeswax. That split is on coloured wax or clear wax. An early chest is a third case, on wax for antique furniture.

Pack size and what the listing counted

The cheap tins are small, or almost unreviewed. Tableau dark wax is about £9.55 for 100 ml, which reviewers use on a coffee table or a cabinet. A run of doors will empty it. Georgian mahogany is about £9.65, titled 150 ml, with a unit count of 205 g and 5.0 from one review dated 8 July 2026. That is a trial, not a score beside 633 reviews. Full-size pastes sat between about £15.30 and £17.77 on 19 October 2026. The two 500 ml antique pine listings are separate ASINs, and the cheaper one has the larger review file. Colron’s title says 400 g and the item weight says 222 g. Quote both. These bands are these eight shelf prices only.

Smell, silicone and the label

Black Bison reviews call the aroma strong enough that some buyers air the room for days. One Briwax reviewer moved the job outside under shelter. Colron is noticed in the tin and said to fade on the wood. Fiddes rugger brown splits the file between low odour and a couple of hours with the windows open. Open a window, and read the CLP label for the flame pictogram and any drowsiness line. The Health and Safety Executive explains that labelling system. Only Tableau’s bullets in this set say silicone-free. Icon tells you not to use silicone spray, because it is difficult to remove later. That line does not make a 100 ml dark wax the tin for an early chest. If the room is dry, the wood can take a tint, and you can ventilate, choose a shade on the main comparison. If any of those three fails, stop.

Common questions

Can I use antique pine wax outside?
No claim in this set supports outdoor use. Colron’s outdoor question is unanswered, and the bullets say untreated interior woods. Liberon’s page is an interior wax. Rustins says furniture Briwax is not for outside. A stored note about garden teak is not an exterior claim on the bullets.
Does wax belong on a dining table or a worktop?
Not if you wash the surface. A reviewer on the £15.30 Black Bison tin found the wax came off on cleaning cloths and switched to varnish. Rustins rules furniture Briwax out for worktops and certified food contact. A sideboard you only dust is a different job.
Should I buy the 100 ml Tableau tin or a 500 ml paste?
Buy 100 ml for one dark table or a cabinet, and for the silicone-free line, at about £9.55. Buy 500 ml for doors or a run of interior pine: the about £15.30 tin has 672 reviews. Georgian mahogany at about £9.65 is a shade trial, not a full-size tin.
What does silicone-free change on a modern sideboard?
Only Tableau prints silicone-free among these eight listings. Icon’s advice is to avoid silicone spray because it is hard to take off later, which matters if you might French polish the sideboard in a later year. It does not make Tableau a clear beeswax or the right pack for a set of doors.
Why do two antique pine listings have different prices?
They are different ASINs. B007ABZVCE is 500 ml at about £15.30 with 4.6 from 672 reviews. B01B7XCW8G is 500 ml at about £17.77 with 4.7 from 41 reviews, and several stored texts name another Black Bison colour. The higher star average on the smaller file is not a better buy.
Is a 5.0 score from one review enough?
No. Georgian mahogany, B0CRTHFWNZ, is 5.0 from one review dated 8 July 2026, at about £9.65. Fiddes rugger brown is 4.8 from 633 reviews at about £16.49. Use the one-review tin only to try a mahogany shade on a scrap, and read 150 ml on the title against a unit count of 205 g.
