Wax for antique furniture

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have an older chest or table, and you are about to buy a coloured paste because the tin says antique. Wax for antique furniture, in the sense conservators use, is a rare coat of unstained beeswax, or often no wax at all. The pastes in this amazon.co.uk comparison are tinted or dark. They can warm stripped timber or change a patina. Prices stay on the [antique wax comparison](/hub/paints-and-varnishes/antique-wax). This page is the decision to stop. Antique on the tin is a colour name

Antique pine, antique brown and Georgian mahogany are shade names. They do not mean the tin was made for a Georgian chest. Fiddes rugger brown, B00HEC1YZ2, carries the listing use “wood antiques restoration”. The stored UK reviews are often new scaffold board and pine shelves, and the colour deepens with each coat. Liberon Black Bison antique pine is sold for new and antique interior wood. The Regional Furniture Society tells you not to confuse that range with the clear beeswax paste they name. Ask whether you want this piece to change colour. If the wood is bare or newly stripped and the answer is yes, test a scrap. If the answer is no, a pigmented paste is the wrong purchase. A 1990s dresser is not an early oak chest.

What conservators actually tell you to use

Icon tells you to dust, and to wax only to buff out marks, with beeswax, infrequently. Wood does not need feeding. French polish is a specialist finish. The room should sit at about 40–60% relative humidity. The Regional Furniture Society says wax once in a few years at most, if you wax at all. The product they name is an unstained beeswax with turpentine, such as Liberon Beeswax Paste. They set Black Bison aside, and they do not want wax on dry unfinished early wood. If you are unsure, they say do nothing. That clear beeswax is not one of these eight ASINs. Tableau is silicone-free, which does not make a 100 ml dark wax the historic method. Dusting changes nothing this week. How thin a coat has to be, if you do wax, is on how to apply antique wax.

Silicone, spray and feeding

Do not use silicone polish or spray. Silicone is difficult to remove, and it can stop a later finish from taking. Among these eight tins, only Tableau states silicone-free. The others do not print the claim, which is not proof that they contain silicone. A cloth and a tin you can see are easier to keep thin than a spray in the carving. Icon says wood does not need feeding. A dry early surface should not be waxed because it looks thirsty. Aim for about 40–60% relative humidity, keep the piece out of direct sun and off a radiator, and dust. Liberon already excludes Black Bison from kitchens and bathrooms.

When a coloured paste is still a fair buy

A coloured paste is a fair buy when the piece has been stripped, or it is new pine, and you mean to change the colour. Scaffold-board shelves and a sanded pine door are the jobs the reviews describe. You are choosing a decorative finish. Who leads on review evidence for a mid-brown is on best antique wax. Call a conservator for veneer, inlay, gilding, a lifting finish, or if the work would mean stripping paint that might be pre-1960s lead. If the plan for an early oak chest is antique pine, put the tin back and dust it. A later wax, if you want one, is an unstained beeswax used rarely, not Black Bison.

Common questions

How often should I wax an antique?
Icon says infrequently, and only to buff out marks. The Regional Furniture Society, for historic furniture, says once in a few years at most, and sometimes not at all. A yearly coat of coloured paste builds colour and can dull carving. Dusting is the regular job. On an early finish, any wax should be a clear beeswax.
Is Black Bison the right wax for an early oak chest?
No. The Regional Furniture Society names unstained beeswax with turpentine, such as Liberon Beeswax Paste, and it says not Black Bison. Black Bison antique pine is a tinted paste for new and antique interior wood on the maker’s bullets, and it is the wrong default when the patina should stay. If you are unsure, do nothing.
Does furniture need feeding with wax?
Icon says wood does not need feeding. Wax is a surface film, not a nutrient. Dry unfinished early wood should not be waxed because it looks thirsty. About 40–60% relative humidity matters more than another coat. A coloured paste changes the colour and still does not feed the timber.
What humidity should the room sit at?
About 40–60% relative humidity, which is Icon’s band for furniture. Very dry central heating opens joints and lifts veneer whether or not the surface is waxed. A wax coat will not correct a room that is too dry, or a piece stood against a radiator. Move the furniture before you buy a tin.
Is French polish the same as wax polish?
No. French polish is a shellac finish, and Icon treats it as specialist work. Wax polish is a soft film you buff. Wire wool and the wrong solvent can cut a French polished surface. If you are not sure which finish you have, do not experiment with a tinted paste. Ask someone who repairs that film.
When do I call a conservator instead of buying a tin?
Call one for veneer, inlay, gilding, a lifting or crazed finish, or if the next step would be stripping paint that might contain lead. Also stop if you do not know whether the surface is French polish. A coloured wax will not repair those faults. A sound modern piece you simply want warmer is a different decision.
