Wallpaper steamer buying guide

Updated: 17 October 2026

You are in a hallway where a dry scraper has already torn the lining, and the results page mixes a £13.99 bottle kit with a row of 4 litre steamers. This wallpaper steamer buying guide is the set of checks that come before a model name: steam or a bottle, then tank, hose, plate and plug. The [wallpaper stripper comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/wallpaper-stripper) applies those checks to the eight amazon.co.uk listings kept on 16 October 2026. Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, used those listings and public UK sources, not a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Steam or a bottle, in one pass

B&Q puts a chemical stripper on a small area, such as one or two layers or a feature wall, and an electric steamer on a large or stubborn area. That is the fork, and it is the first check, because a tank size is irrelevant if a bottle will do the wall. In this folder the consistent Bartoline kit is £13.99 for 500 ml, a 6 inch scraper, a sponge and nitrile gloves. The cheapest steamer, the Wagner SteamForce, is £33.00 for 2,000 W at 230 V. If the job is one scored wall and you will dilute and wait, stop at the bottle. Several rooms make the machine the purchase. This guide does not rank a winner.

Tank, hose and plate

Every steamer kept here prints 4 L or 4.5 L, and a claimed run of about 60 or 70 minutes. Read that as one fill for a room of ordinary paper, not as a whole house. Wagner prints a maximum of 70 minutes on 4 L. BLACK+DECKER’s bullet prints up to 60 minutes on 4 L. Both VLOXO colours print 4.5 L and 70 minutes. One green VLOXO review reported about 30 minutes against that line, so you will interrupt it when you refill. Hose length is the landing check. Wagner prints 3.7 m, the longest figure here. BLACK+DECKER’s bullet prints 3.6 m, and Draper prints 3 m. VLOXO does not print a length. The £1.99 gap, £34.99 against £33.00, is a small plate in the Plus title. B&Q uses a small plate for door frames, radiators and sockets. Open walls suit the large plate.

Plug, fuse and the spec lines that disagree

UK mains are 230 V. Electrical Safety First wants a UK 3-pin plug, not a travel adaptor. Their fuse guidance puts a BS 1362 13 A fuse on about 700–3,000 W, which covers the wattages printed here. Cover sockets, and add an RCD plug only if the consumer unit has none. The Health and Safety Executive treats an RCD as extra protection. Higher watts are not a better machine. BLACK+DECKER’s 2,400 W bullet has the longest star line, 4.6 from 4,917, and the same file prints 12 Volts and 2,400 Amps beside it. The UK product page and the type-2 manual say 230 V and 2,400 W. Do not buy it as a 12 V tool. Neither VLOXO table prints volts or a plug type, and one green review reported the wrong adaptor.

What the price bands in this folder can and cannot tell you

The shelf prices on 16 October 2026 fall into two bands. The kits are £13.99 and £18.99. The steamers run from £33.00 for the Wagner SteamForce to £45.99 for the blue VLOXO. The £18.99 kit’s title says 2 × 500 ml, a bullet says 1 × 500 ml, and the size field says 1 l. You cannot price two bottles from a page that disagrees with itself. A lower steamer price does not mean a shorter hose or a printed voltage. The £33.00 Wagner prints 230 V and 3.7 m. Named picks are on the best wallpaper steamer page.

Common questions

What tank size is enough for a room?
The steamers in this folder print 4 L or 4.5 L, with a claimed run of about 60 or 70 minutes. That is the size these UK listings treat as a room of ordinary paper on one fill, not a whole house. You will still stop to refill, and one VLOXO review got about 30 minutes against a 70 minute claim. A bigger printed tank is not a reliability score.
How long a hose do I need for a landing?
If the tank stays on the hall floor, the printed lengths here are 3.7 m on both Wagner models, 3.6 m on the BLACK+DECKER bullet, and 3 m on the Draper. VLOXO does not print a length, and a green-listing review wanted more hose on the stairs. A longer hose still needs a connector that stays put. Wagner reviews include one that unscrewed.
When is a small plate worth paying for?
Pay the £1.99 gap between the SteamForce at £33.00 and the Plus at £34.99 when you have window reveals, door frames or sockets, which is where B&Q uses a small plate. The Plus title names that plate. The base title does not. Open walls do not need it, and the bundled Plus scraper is called weak in reviews, so bring your own knife either way.
What plug should I refuse?
Refuse a two-pin plug, a travel adaptor, and any unit whose voltage is not printed if you cannot see a UK 3-pin plug in the box. Electrical Safety First is explicit about that for wallpaper strippers. One green VLOXO review reported the wrong adaptor. Do not steam on an adaptor while you see if it works.
Why do two VLOXO listings share a model number?
Both are WP002B, with the same title claims of 2,300 W, 4.5 L and 70 minutes. The green listing is £41.99 and names a hose, a safety cap and a steam plate. The blue listing is £45.99 and its components field says only Wallpaper Steamer. Same model number, different box line, price and star line. Check the plug on whichever one arrives.
