How to install wall panels

Updated: October 2026

You have already chosen a panel, and the box is in the hall. How to install wall panels still depends on which of the ten amazon.co.uk rows you bought, because adhesive is often not in the carton and an MDF board is not a foam tile. Products Compared used the fixing lines in the [wall panels comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/wall-panels), plus UK retailer fitting sheets for method shape, not as a test of these ASINs. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. If you have not chosen the type, start with the [buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/wall-panels/sub/wall-panels-buying-guide). If the wall is damp or you cannot see where the cables run, stop before any adhesive.

Before any adhesive

The wall wants to be dry, flat, and free of loose paint. A 3D tile will rock on a high spot, and a flexible veneer sheet will show the hollow. Find cables and pipes before you decide on screws. A retailer sheet such as V4’s, written for their own slat board, tells you to acclimatise rigid panels for about 24 hours and to store them flat. That is a sensible pause for an 11 kg MCW board. It is not evidence that your Art3d box was tested for 24 hours. Open the carton and look for glue before you promise yourself a one-hour job. Knocked corners show up in the shared MCW reviews, so reject a crushed board before you cover the damage with adhesive. Consumer Rights Act 2015 quality rules are the route for a board that arrives with the corners already gone, not a bead of glue over the dent.

Glue, screws, or the backing that is already there

Match the method to the row. Art3d’s black and white PVC tiles are glue-down. UK reviews mention tape or glue you buy, including double-sided tape behind a television on the white pack. MCW walnut claims a guide in the pack and recommends a PU adhesive that is not included. Shop sheets for other brands describe black screws through the felt so the head sits in the dark strip. That is their method, not a screw count we tested on MCW. Irisroom is peel and stick, and you still press onto a flat wall because the edges do not interlock. SVILINEK’s bullet says no drills. One review used drywall screws because the sheet was flexible and slightly warped. Screws through felt, and any batten-and-wool build, change the absorption story, which the home studio page owns.

Cutting MDF is not the same as knifing foam

Irisroom’s foam and the thin veneer sheets cut with a knife. A 2400 mm MDF board is a saw cut, and the Health and Safety Executive treats MDF cutting as wood dust. For a long indoor session, HSE’s published control is class M or H extraction and respiratory protection at APF 20, such as FFP3. Do not sweep the dust into the air. If your MCW guide says which face to put down, follow the guide in that box. Sockets are a cut-out, not a place to glue blindly. If you cannot trace the cable, do not sink a screw or a deep blade there.

What fails once you think you are finished

Three failures show up in these reviews. First, there is no flat landing on a deep 3D tile, so a proud plaster blob or a cable clip prints through the joint. Second, a wavy foam or veneer sheet will not stay on its own sticker. That is the SVILINEK gym wall, where screws were added after the peel-and-stick claim. Third, the corner was already crushed in the carton. Glue will not square a broken arris. Stop and call a competent person when the wall is damp or unstable, when the lining is on an escape route or in a non-domestic room that asks for a fire class, when you would be cutting a lot of MDF indoors with no extraction, or when services are hidden and you cannot see a safe line for a screw. None of these listings print a Euroclass, so a fire-resistant PVC bullet is not your paperwork.

Common questions

Do I need to buy glue?
Yes on the PVC tiles, on MCW if you are gluing rather than screwing, on the 6-pack, and on the bamboo roll unless you staple it. Irisroom includes a peel-and-stick back that reviews often call strong. SVILINEK includes a claimed sticky back that was not enough for every reviewer. Walnut MCW names Stick it2it PU adhesive and does not put it in the box.
Where do screws go on a slat panel?
Shop sheets for other brands say black screws through the felt, between the slats, so the head is less obvious. That is their method, not a screw count we tested on MCW. The walnut listing allows a guide and a separate adhesive, and it also says the boards can be cut and joined above 240 cm. Keep screws out of cables. If you add battens and wool, you have changed the acoustic build, not just the fixing.
How do I cut MDF without filling the room with dust?
Use extraction, and for a longer indoor cut use RPE at APF 20, such as FFP3, which is the HSE control for wood dust rather than a tip invented for this page. Do not brush the dust up. A knife is enough for the polyester foam tiles and for thin veneer. It is the wrong tool for a full 2400 × 600 mm MDF board.
What if the wall is uneven?
Flatten or fill it before you commit. Peel-and-stick foam and flexible veneer show hollows and can let go, which is why one SVILINEK review added screws. Deep PVC tiles need a landing or the joint gaps. A slat board can bridge a small hollow if the adhesive or the screws actually hold the edges, and it will not hide a wall that is out of plumb.
Should I glue over cables?
No. Find the cable route first. Adhesive and screws both become a damage problem if they land on a concealed lead. If you cannot trace the services, that is one of the points where a fitter should take the wall, especially on a full-height board you cannot see behind once it is up.
