How to powder coat at home

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a corona gun, dry air, and an oven you will never use for food. A steel bracket hangs in the garage, and the first cloud slides off or leaves the corners bare. How to powder coat at home is that order: clean metal, a clamp on bare steel, recesses before flats, then a cure timed from the metal on the powder sheet. The [powder coating gun comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/powder-coating-gun) lines up the five amazon.co.uk kits. Peter F. used Electrostatic Magic’s UK steps, the Eastwood PCS-250 manual, and Health and Safety Executive dust guidance, and ran no lab coat. Prepare the metal and the air

Powder sticks to clean, dry, conductive metal, so rust, oil, or lint drops the cloud before the gun is at fault. Strip to sound steel, degrease, and wipe with a lint-free cloth. A paper towel that sheds fibres leaves a line after the melt. Mask threads and bearing faces, and hang the work on a bare hook, because a painted hook fails like a painted clamp. No single air pressure fits every carton. Eastwood’s PCS-250 manual for item 33278 states about 5–8 psi, and the VitalisWorks listing states 10–15 psi. Tyre-inflator pressure can split a bottle, so add a regulator and a moisture trap before damp air clumps the powder. Voltage, the earth lead, and that trap are in the powder coating gun buying guide.

Earth, distance, and corners

The clamp has to bite bare metal on the part, or on a clean hanger that touches it. Paint, tape, old powder, or rust under the jaw floats the work, and the cloud slides off. Do not bypass the earth to see if the gun still sprays. Electrostatic Magic earths before the cloud, for their tribo gun and for these corona kits in the same order. Coat corners and recesses before the flats, or the Faraday cage leaves the pocket bare while the outside looks finished. On a dual-voltage box, use the lower setting in that recess. Cover the clamp mark with the voltage off after a scrap pass, and do not cure a half-covered part.

Cure the metal, not the dial

The metal has to reach the powder sheet, so keep two published examples apart. Electrostatic Magic’s rule of thumb is 180°C at the surface, then 10 minutes, with some powders up to 200°C for 15 minutes. Eastwood’s HotCoat note preheats towards 400°F (204°C), waits for the whole part to flow, then adds 20 minutes. A heavy casting may need 10–30 minutes of that flow-out before the clock. A bracket heats faster than a casting. Point an infrared thermometer at the metal, not at the dial. A dull film at 180°C on the dial is still waiting. Eastwood says many powders keep a slight orange peel, so gloss is not a glass finish. The manual bars a gas oven and a food oven, because mildly toxic fumes are given off. If the part will not fit a dedicated electric oven, the powder coating small metal parts page is the coater check.

Dust, shock, and when to stop

Coating powder is breathable dust at home as well as at work. For employers, the Health and Safety Executive cites 10 mg/m³ inhalable and 4 mg/m³ respirable over eight hours, and TGIC means you read the data sheet first. Those figures are not a permit to breathe a garage cloud. Wear a dust respirator, ventilate, and do not dry-sweep or blow powder off your clothes. Stay off a live electrode, and keep the earth lead clear of it. If the box smells hot, trips, or you feel a shock, unplug it. You cannot bake a fitted wing on the vehicle.

Common questions

What order do I prep, spray, and cure?
Strip to bare metal, degrease, and wipe with a lint-free cloth, then hang the part and earth it. Spray recesses first, then the flats, at the dry-air pressure your gun states, and touch the clamp mark with the voltage off. Cure from the metal on the powder sheet, not from the dial. Use scrap metal for the first pass if you cannot replace the real part.
Where does the earth clamp have to bite?
It has to bite bare metal on the part, or on a clean hanger in contact with that metal. Paint, old powder, tape, or rust under the jaw floats the work, and the powder falls off. Do not bypass the earth to test the gun. A coated hook fails the same way, so check the jaw again if you move the part.
How far should the gun be from the part?
Electrostatic Magic’s guide uses about 200 mm for their tribo kit, which is their distance rather than a gap for every corona gun on amazon.co.uk. Follow your manual if it prints another figure. Too close can pile powder and arc, and too far leaves patches the oven will not fill.
Why do corners stay bare?
Charged powder goes to the nearest open face, so a recess stays bare while the outside looks finished. Coat corners and pockets first, then the flats. On a dual-voltage box, use the lower setting in a deep pocket only after the earth is sound. Hosile’s stated 20 kV and 50 kV will not fix a clamp that is sitting on paint.
Is 180°C on the oven dial enough?
Not by itself. The metal has to reach the powder sheet for the stated time, and the dial only describes the air. Electrostatic Magic’s rule of thumb is 180°C at the surface, then 10 minutes, with some powders up to 200°C for 15 minutes. Eastwood’s HotCoat note is separate: flow-out near 204°C, then 20 minutes, longer on a heavy casting.
Can I use the kitchen oven if I clean it afterwards?
No. Eastwood’s PCS-250 instructions reject a food oven because mildly toxic fumes are given off, and they also reject a gas oven. Wiping the racks does not make that oven fit for the next meal. Use a dedicated electric oven that will never cook food. If the part will not fit, send it to a coater.
What do I wear, and how do I clean up powder?
Wear a dust respirator and ventilate while you spray and cure. For employers, the Health and Safety Executive cites 10 mg/m³ inhalable and 4 mg/m³ respirable over eight hours, so read the sheet if the powder contains TGIC. Do not dry-sweep or blow the dust off your clothes. Vacuum or damp-wipe after the charge settles, and keep the waste out of any room where you eat.
