Powder coating gun UK: what to buy before the gun

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have steel brackets, a compressor that inflates tyres, and a kitchen oven you still use for food. A powder coating gun UK box from about £94.92 to about £176.20 looks like the whole job. It is the small invoice. This page settles the mains voltage, the earth lead, and the cure oven before you compare kilovolts. The [powder coating gun comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/powder-coating-gun) lines up the five amazon.co.uk corona kits. The question here is the setup they assume, not a single winner. Peter F. read those listings on 20 October 2026 and ran no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a powder coating gun does not include

The gun charges dry powder onto earthed metal. A dedicated oven then melts and cures the film. The five amazon.co.uk listings, from the PTOOL PT-200 at about £94.92 to VitalisWorks at about £176.20, are the gun and a few fittings. They are not a compressor, an oven, or powder in the colour you want. Eastwood’s PCS-250 manual for item 33278 asks for about 1 cfm at 5–8 psi and a dedicated electric oven, not a food oven or a gas oven. Garage air at tool pressure is the mistake that splits a bottle. Powder and a dust respirator belong on the same list.

Mains voltage and the earth

UK mains are 230 V, with a BS 1363 plug. None of the five listings shows that plug, so do not read any of these listings as a 230 V gun. The Eastwood HotCoat PCS-250, ASIN B08WWXJHCL, was about £124.00 on 20 October 2026. The manual for item 33278 states 110–120 VAC. A step-down transformer can feed that supply if the earth stays in the circuit. A UK socket on that control box destroys it. The powder holds only if a clamp bites bare metal. Do not bypass the earth to see if it sprays. Buy the earth, the dry air, and a non-food oven before you rank kilovolts.

What to read on the listing

Four lines are worth reading, each as a trade-off against a garage you already have: printed kilovolts, a foot switch, a moisture separator, and a ground clamp. A fuller carton still does not include the oven. Hosile, at about £117.67, states 20 kV and 50 kV and is the only listing in this set that states a pedal, a moisture separator, and a grounding clip together. The 4.6 from 19 is largely written outside the UK, so it is not British buyer proof. A foot switch is convenient, not required for the cure. If you already own a regulator and a trap, a missing separator is a smaller gap than a missing earth clamp. Which listing matches your garage is the best powder coating gun page. This page does not name a top pick.

When not to buy

Stop when the part will not fit an oven you will never use for food. A bracket can. A full-size wheel, a frame, or a panel still on the car cannot, and a local coater is the honest route. That size check is the powder coating small metal parts page. Paid work is the same exit. None of these listings shows a BS EN 50050-2 mark. Ignore a bullet that says the gun coats wood and plastic. The PT-200 listing says so. The cure is heat on conductive metal, often around 180–200°C at the metal. If the part has to stay on the vehicle, the other tool is a liquid spray gun, with the limits on the powder coating versus a spray gun page.

Common questions

Do I need a compressor and an oven as well as the gun?
Yes. None of these guns includes a compressor, a curing oven, or the powder. Electrostatic Magic’s Easy Coat, a UK tribo kit at £159 and not one of these five, still tells you to add air and heat. Add a dust respirator. The Health and Safety Executive treats coating powder as breathable dust and also flags fire, shock, and compressed air.
Will a 110–120 V Eastwood gun run from a UK socket?
Not directly. Item 33278 is stated as 110–120 VAC, and a UK socket is 230 V. You need a step-down transformer, with the earth kept. ASIN B08WWXJHCL at about £124.00 is not that kit. Frost’s 230–240 V bundle was £299 on the page checked, reduced from £359, and it still excludes the compressor and the oven. Do not read any of the five listings as a 230 V gun. None shows a BS 1363 plug.
What kilovolt range is actually printed on these listings?
Hosile states 20 kV and 50 kV. MXBAOHENG states 30–50 kV. VitalisWorks states none, so the figure is n/a. Eastwood’s bullets omit 15 kV and 25 kV. The item 33278 manual prints them. A higher number does not replace the earth, dry air, or a known mains voltage. A tribo gun may quote no kilovolts, because it charges by friction.
Why does a moisture trap matter before the first trigger?
These guns want low, dry air: about 5–8 psi in Eastwood’s manual, 5–10 psi on Frost’s kit note, and 10–15 psi on VitalisWorks. MXBAOHENG states 0.5–1.2 kg and does not give psi. A moisture separator keeps water out of that path. Hosile is the only one of the five that states the separator with a pedal and a grounding clip.
What is a realistic extra spend after the gun?
On 20 October 2026 the guns were about £94.92 to £176.20. As a rule of thumb, a gun-plus-transformer bundle sits nearer £229–£299, before air and heat. Powder and a dust respirator are extra. Oven and compressor prices are not in this set, so quote them yourself.
When should I skip the purchase and use a local coater?
Skip the gun when the part will not fit a dedicated oven, when the work is paid, or when the part is still on the vehicle. A bracket can be the hobby case if you already have dry air and a known mains voltage. A frame, a wheel, or a panel on the car is the coater’s job. Stop too if a control box trips or smells hot. The PT-200 reviews include breaker trips. Unplug it.
