How to use a paint roller: rinse, load, and wash it

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a sleeve and a tray, and the tin is water-based emulsion. How to use a paint roller is a set order: rinse the new sleeve, load it wet but not dripping, roll into a still-wet edge, then wash the emulsion out and dry the sleeve standing up. If the sleeve or the tray is still to buy, start with the [painting rollers comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/painting-rollers). Poles are on the [walls and ceilings](/hub/painting-supplies/painting-rollers/sub/painting-rollers-walls-and-ceilings) guide, and pile is on the [buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/painting-rollers/sub/painting-rollers-buying-guide). Rinse the new sleeve before any paint

A new sleeve can look clean and still shed loose fibres into the first coat. Harris asks you to rinse it before any paint. The Fit for the job listing uses cold or tepid water for that rinse, then a thorough dry. Warm soapy water comes later, once emulsion is in the pile. Hold the sleeve under the tap until the water runs clear, squeeze it, and stand it on end so the core drains. A soaking sleeve thins the first load.

Load until the sleeve is wet, not dripping

Dulux’s decorating notes say to roll the sleeve until it is saturated and not dripping. Work it down the slope and back so the pile takes paint from the well. A string of emulsion will hit the skirting. A scratchy first stroke is too light. Keep the well shallow and reload. Cut in with a 1 or 2 inch brush along the metre you are about to roll.

Roll a small section and keep the edge wet

Cover about one metre square, then pause. Dulux Trade uses that size for a normal coat: spread the paint, then lay it off. A one-coat note uses about half a metre for a different paint. Keep the metre for ordinary emulsion unless the tin names the smaller patch. Lay the paint on as a W, then fill it as an M. Dulux uses that pair so the sleeve does not dump its load in one stripe. Spread the paint sideways, then lay off downward with light pressure.

Bag it overnight, or wash the emulsion out

Dulux lets you seal a loaded sleeve in a bag overnight. Press the air out and close it, then finish the next day while the pile is still soft. The wash still comes when the room is done. Scrape clean emulsion back into the tin, and leave gritty paint in the tray. Harris has you scrape the sleeve, wash it in warm soapy water, and scrape again until the water runs clear. Keep that warm wash apart from the cold or tepid first rinse, then stand the sleeve on end. For oil-based gloss, use the solvent named on the tin and ventilate the room. Call a decorator for a stairwell, a coating you cannot name, or a frame held overhead on tape.

Common questions

How much paint should be on the sleeve before it touches the wall?
The sleeve should look wet all round and should not drip once it is clear of the tray. Dulux calls that load saturated but not dripping. Roll a heavy string of emulsion out on the slope before the wall. A scratchy first stroke needs another pass through the well.
Do I cut in the whole room before I roll?
Cut in only the patch you are about to roll, with a 1 or 2 inch brush. Dulux Trade warns that a whole-room edge dries before the roller arrives. Brush about a metre, then roll that patch while the brushwork is wet.
What does a wet edge actually mean on emulsion?
A wet edge is emulsion that is still open, so the next stroke blends into it. Overlap the metre square you have just rolled before the shine goes. Leave the room and a matt edge can show a join when you return. Carry on while the edge is glossy.
Why rinse a brand-new sleeve if it looks clean?
A new pile holds loose fibres even when it looks clean. Harris says to rinse before use so they stay out of the first coat. The Fit for the job listing uses cold or tepid water, then a thorough dry. Warm soapy water is the later wash, after emulsion is in the sleeve.
Can I bag the roller and finish tomorrow?
Seal a loaded sleeve in a bag with the air pressed out if you will finish tomorrow. Dulux treats that as an overnight pause, and the pile should still be soft in the morning. When the room is done, wash in warm soapy water until the water runs clear and dry the sleeve standing up.
Is warm soapy water right for gloss as well as emulsion?
Warm soapy water is for water-based emulsion, until the rinse runs clear. Oil-based gloss needs the cleaner named on the tin, with the room ventilated. Dulux sends solvent-based paint to that solvent. Read the label before you wash, including when you are unsure what is in the tray.
Why must the sleeve dry standing up?
Stand the sleeve on end so the core can drain. Harris and Dulux both air-dry sleeves upright. Flat on the board, the underside stays wet and the core holds a pool. Use the same upright dry after the cold first rinse.
