HVLP or airless paint sprayer

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a tin of emulsion for the spare bedroom, or a fence stain waiting on a dry Saturday, and amazon.co.uk has lined a cup gun near £33 up beside a pump near £300. Choosing an HVLP or airless paint sprayer comes before any wattage comparison, because the coating decides which machine can break it up. Prices and ratings for the eleven machines are on the [paint sprayer comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-sprayer). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026 and public UK guidance, with no lab spray test, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The fork is the coating, not the wattage

HVLP on this shelf means a turbine moving a high volume of air at low pressure through a cup. Cordless cups in this set are still HVLP. A chair, a door, or a stain you can thin to the viscosity cup is the work this side is built for. The Wagner Fence & Decking sprayer is the turbine people misread as a pump. Amazon.co.uk lists it at 8 psi and 460 W. Eight psi is blower air, so this is not an airless pump. Wind and panel size stay on the paint sprayer for fences page. Airless means the paint itself is pressurised. The Graco TrueCoat One is listed at 117 bar, sucking from the can. Wattage does not choose the machine.

Emulsion and masonry sit on the airless side

A bedroom tin of emulsion is where a cup gun in this set stops being the honest choice. Farrow & Ball's spraying sheet sends their finishes to airless equipment and keeps HVLP for trim, not for large walls and ceilings. Wagner UK allows dilution up to 10% only when emulsion is very thick, and that figure belongs to their airless method. The Wagner fence manual places wall paints on the not-suitable list. Choose an airless whose listing claims the coating. The £299 Graco, at 3.2 from 28 ratings and with no plug on the spec table, is a weak default. Which pump to buy is on the best paint sprayer page, and a BS 1363 plug is in the paint sprayer buying guide.

Mist, wind, and injection

The Health and Safety Executive says HVLP may reduce how far mist travels, and that an unguarded airless tip can inject paint. That is not a transfer-efficiency percentage for these listings. Injection sits with the RP8622, the InoKraft MaXpray M3, and the Graco TrueCoat One. A fence turbine at 8 psi does not create that risk. Isocyanate coatings need air-fed breathing apparatus and stay off a domestic job.

Where the eleven listings sit

A 5.0 from two ratings is a thinner record than 4.3 from 1,779. Neither cordless listing states a runtime in minutes. The RP8622 title's 3,000 psi and the table's 3,000 kPa are not the same pressure, and InoKraft's hose is printed as both 15.2 m and 1.8 m. Thinned stain or a matching fence tin points to HVLP. Unthinned emulsion or a whole exterior points to an airless whose listing says so.

Common questions

When is an HVLP paint sprayer the right choice?
An HVLP paint sprayer fits a thin coating on a small job, such as stain, varnish, or furniture, once the liquid passes that gun's viscosity check. Fence paint, stain, or preservative can go through the Wagner Fence & Decking turbine listed at 8 psi. Unthinned emulsion across a room belongs with an airless pump whose listing claims that paint.
When is an airless paint sprayer the right choice?
An airless paint sprayer fits unthinned emulsion, masonry, or a whole exterior when the listing claims that coating. The pumps here are the NEU MASTER RP8622, the InoKraft MaXpray M3, and the Graco TrueCoat One. InoKraft says you need not pre-thin. Wagner UK's ceiling of 10% dilution applies to very thick emulsion on airless equipment. Keep the tip guard on, and treat the £299 Graco, at 3.2 from 28 ratings, as a weak automatic buy.
Can a cup gun spray neat emulsion?
Treat a cup gun as the wrong default for neat emulsion. Farrow & Ball keeps HVLP for trim and sends large walls and ceilings to airless equipment. The Wagner fence-turbine manual lists wall paints as unsuitable. Spray emulsion neat only when the tin and the gun both allow it, and do not copy Wagner's 10% airless figure onto a £33 cup.
Is the Wagner fence sprayer an airless?
The Wagner Fence & Decking sprayer is a turbine, listed at 460 W and 8 psi, with a 1,400 ml pot and a 1.8 m hose for fence paint, stain, and preservative. The manual excludes wall paints. Eight psi of blower air does not pressurise the paint the way the Graco TrueCoat One does at 117 bar. Use the Wagner on a matching fence coating when the weather is still.
Which danger belongs to an airless tip?
Injection is the hazard that comes with an airless tip. The Health and Safety Executive warns that an unguarded tip can force paint through the skin, because a pump is driving the fluid. A fence turbine listed at 8 psi makes mist and does not create that injection risk. Keep the guard on, keep your hands clear, and flush the machine the same day. Isocyanate spraying needs air-fed breathing apparatus and sits outside a domestic emulsion job.
Does an HVLP sprayer always give less overspray?
Less overspray is not a measured result for these HVLP listings, and there is no transfer-efficiency percentage to quote. The Health and Safety Executive says HVLP may reduce how far mist travels compared with conventional air, and that airless spraying has less travelling mist plus an injection risk. Spray Direct describes airless overspray as higher. Mask nearby surfaces anyway, outdoors as well as indoors.
