Paint sprayer for fences

Updated: 21 October 2026

A Saturday on a British terrace often means closeboard panels, a shed or a strip of decking, and a paint sprayer for fences only helps if it matches the tin and a still afternoon. On amazon.co.uk the Wagner fence sprayer is about £60, with a 1,400 ml pot, a 1.8 m hose and 8 psi listed, at 4.5 from 4,784 ratings. It is the top pick for fence paint and stain if you will refill. This page stays on outdoor wood. Peter F. took the figures from amazon.co.uk listings and maker instructions, not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The wider shortlist is the [paint sprayer](/hub/painting-supplies/paint-sprayer) comparison.

A panel is not pebbledash

Fence colour goes onto timber you can still read. InoKraft reviews of unthinned masonry are a wall claim, not a result for a closeboard panel. NEU MASTER is the best value cup when you can thin and strain. A rendered wall belongs with the airless row in HVLP or airless paint sprayer. Wagner's manual excludes wall paints, plaster, facade paint and flammable materials, and prints 170 DIN-s.

Cups empty; a 1.8 m hose still needs a plan

The UK product page prints 0–120 ml/min and the manual prints a maximum of 150 ml/min. Keep those lines apart. A 1,400 ml pot on a long run means a refill, and the 1.8 m hose still ties you to the pot. NEU MASTER lists a 6.65 ft lead, about 2 m, so lay an extension before you fill.

Strain, and thin only if that tin says so

Cuprinol's older sprayable treatment says do not thin, and stand about 30 cm off the timber. That does not cancel a gun at 80 DIN/s or 100 DIN-s. ROTTOGOON publishes 80 DIN/s and NEU MASTER publishes 100 DIN-s. If the tin forbids thinning and the colour will not pass, use a brush or a heavier sprayer. Wickes says dilute slightly after treating algae, and that line belongs to their demonstration, not to every fence colour.

Wind, neighbours, and the airless fence

The Health and Safety Executive notes that wind carries spray outdoors. If the leaves are moving, wait. A hose is worth it when the 1,400 ml pot keeps stopping you. Graco's TrueCoat One draws from the can on a 7.5 m hose, further than Wagner's 1.8 m, though that listing is 3.2 from 28 ratings and the spec table does not state a plug. The shortlist is best paint sprayer and the method is how to use a paint sprayer.

Common questions

Is a cup gun enough for a run of panels?
Yes for a short run, a shed or a gate, if the colour passes the gun and you plan refills. Cups in this set run from 800 ml to 1,400 ml. Wagner reviews say the larger pot can empty in a couple of minutes at full flow, so several panels mean several fills. A cup is the wrong tool when you need a long hose, or when the tin must go on neat and thick.
Can fence paint go in neat?
Sometimes it flows, and sometimes it will not. Wagner reviews show both, so one neat success is not a rule for every fence colour. Cuprinol's older sprayable treatment says do not thin. A gun at 80 DIN/s or 100 DIN-s may still refuse a thick coating you must not thin. If the tin allows spray thinning, strain it. If thinning is forbidden and the gun spits, stop.
What does wind do to the mist?
Wind carries the mist off the fence and onto whatever sits downwind. The Health and Safety Executive says this of outdoor spraying. Cuprinol tells you to avoid wind and to shield plants and brick, which can mean shrubs, a greenhouse, next door's render or a car. If the leaves are lifting, wait. A card at the top edge keeps paint on the timber. It does not fetch droplets back from the border.
When is a hose and a tin better than a pot?
A hose beats a pot when an 800–1,400 ml cup would turn the job into refilling. Graco's TrueCoat One draws from the can on a 7.5 m hose, for projects up to 12 litres, which reaches further than Wagner's 1.8 m hose. The listing is 3.2 from 28 ratings and the spec table does not state a plug, so check the UK lead. InoKraft covers larger unthinned work, but the reviews describe pebbledash, not fence panels.
Is pebbledash the same job as a closeboard panel?
No. Pebbledash is masonry, often sprayed thick and unthinned, as the InoKraft reviews describe. A closeboard panel is timber with a fence colour or stain. Wagner's manual marks wall paints, plaster and facade paint as unsuitable, so a masonry result does not pick the gun. If the rendered wall is in the job, use an airless. For panels only, stay with the cup, the datasheet and the wind.
What has to be masked on a planted boundary?
Mask anything you cannot wash off: shrubs, climbers, brick piers, a greenhouse, gate hardware and a neighbour's paintwork downwind. Wickes masks fixings and cards the top edge. Cuprinol says shield plants and brick, then brush out runs while they are wet. The arris and the latch are easy to miss until the first pass stripes them. Mask before you fill the cup.
What must you flush before the next panel tomorrow?
Flush the gun, the nozzle and the cup the same day, not the next morning. Wagner reviews trace blocked nozzles to particles left in the pot, and colour left overnight is a common cause. Soap and water suits a water-based fence colour. For any other tin, use the cleaner on the datasheet, and do not leave a flammable coating in the gun. Run cleaner through until the spray runs clear, then stop.
