Lawn roller water or sand

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have the drum in the shed and the bung in your hand. Lawn roller water or sand is a storage choice as much as a weight choice. Water comes back out of the bung. Sand weighs more for the same volume, and a small hole makes it slow to remove. Use water when you will empty the drum. Use sand when water was too light, and accept that the sand stays. The drums sit on the [lawn roller comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/lawn-roller). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk reviews and UK guides. We did not weigh these drums. Water when you will empty it

Water is the fill when the drum has to come back to an empty shell. The Outsunny listing tells you to pour the water out when the roller is not in use, and UK buyers on that drum did empty it. A litre of water is 1 kg, and that is a rule of thumb, not a figure we weighed on these drums. On that rule, a 30 litre drum holds about 30 kg of water before you add the steel. DIY Garden puts about 30 kg of water on a different 30 litre roller, which is still not a reading from the Outsunny or the eSkde. If the drum skates, water was too light. How you push it is on the how to use a lawn roller page.

Sand when water is not enough

Sand is the fill when water has already felt too light. On the eSkde 30 litre roller, amazon.co.uk buyers moved to kiln-dried sand. DIY Garden's different 30 litre roller is about 30 kg with water and about 45 kg with sand. The AL-KO UK page prints both 72 kg and 62 kg for water, and both 120 kg and 108 kg for sand. The amazon.co.uk file has neither pair, so this page does not treat 120 kg as the drum's weight.

The bung decides how slow sand is

Outsunny buyers complained that the opening was small once they tried to get sand through it. DIY Garden describes a long sand fill on another roller. That timing was not measured on this drum, so it is not copied here. Play sand, which the AL-KO reviewers preferred, is finer than a lot of builders' sand. Damp builders' sand clumps in a small bung. Kiln-dried sand is what the eSkde buyers switched to. Do not plan to empty that sand later through the same hole. Width, bung and stated capacity belong on the lawn roller buying guide.

What you must not leave in the drum

Pour the water out when you are not using the roller. That is the Outsunny bullet. Empty the drum, then leave the bung out so the inside can dry. Sand is not a guarantee against rust. One earlier Outsunny, left outside full of sand, rusted in a single UK review. That is one case, not a rate. Keep a sand-filled roller under cover. If you have not bought the drum yet, the conditional pick sits on the best lawn roller page.

Common questions

Should I fill a lawn roller with water or sand?
Fill with water when you need to empty the drum after the pass and store a light shell. Fill with sand when a water fill has already felt too light, and when you can keep a heavy drum. Water is the reversible fill. Sand is the heavier one, and a small bung means you should treat it as a fill you will leave in. If you cannot hold the handle on your slope, stay with water.
How much heavier is sand?
A litre of water is 1 kg, as a rule of thumb. My Lush Garden uses about 1.6 kg per litre for dry sand, which is their figure and not a weight from these amazon.co.uk drums. On a different 30 litre roller, DIY Garden puts the gap at about 30 kg of water and about 45 kg of sand. Damp sand will not match a dry-sand rule, and the steel of the drum sits on top of either number.
Can I empty sand later?
You can try, and a small bung makes it slow. Outsunny buyers already found the opening awkward for sand going in, and getting it out is the same hole in reverse. Water tips out because it flows. Sand sits, especially if it has taken on moisture. Plan the sand fill as one you will keep. If you need the drum empty for storage, put water in and pour it out when you finish.
What did AL-KO buyers actually pour in?
UK reviews of the AL-KO roller describe about three to three and a half bags of 25 kg, with a preference for play sand over builders' sand. That is a poured amount from buyers, not a lab weight of the filled drum. The maker's UK page prints 72 kg and 62 kg for water, and 120 kg and 108 kg for sand. Neither pair is in the amazon.co.uk file, so we do not state the roller as 120 kg.
Is a full drum safe to push?
A full drum is safe to push when you can start it, steer it, and stop it on the slope you actually have. The Health and Safety Executive material we used sets no legal kilogram cap for the heavier fill, so there is no official number to hide behind. Sand adds mass on top of the empty roller. If the handle runs away from you on a bank, empty some of the water or leave the sand for a flatter lawn.
