Lawn roller for a new lawn

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have raked the seedbed, scattered the seed, and the drum is on the path with the bung still out. A lawn roller for a new lawn presses seed into the soil, and firms newly laid turf the same way, without packing the surface so water sits on top. On the [lawn roller comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/lawn-roller), these are the drums UK buyers have used for that contact. A full drum on soft topsoil can be too much for the ground and, in one Outsunny review, for the handle. Peter F. read the listing notes, not a lab. Seed needs contact, not a steamroller

Seed left on the surface is what birds take first. Lawnsmith's repair notes say to rake it in, then use a light roller, a half-filled water roller, or your feet on a small patch, in two directions. A full water roller, in their other notes, belongs on a dryish ornamental lawn, not on loose soil the day you sow. Water is the light fill, and you can empty it if the first length ruts. About 10 to 20 seeds per square inch is Lawnsmith's patch number, not a rate for these drums, and rolling does not guarantee germination. Stop if a trench opens. That moist-not-frozen limit is on the how to use a lawn roller page.

Before sowing and after sowing are different passes

Firming the bed and pressing the seed are two walks. An AL-KO line on amazon.co.uk says to firm the soil before you sow and press the seed afterwards. That file gives no litre fill for the GW50, so there is no kilogram to copy onto the drum. The first pass takes the fluff out of newly worked topsoil. The second stays light so you do not seal the surface. One full roll after sowing tries to do both, which is how seed gets buried. If a boot print collapses under your heel, wait. Water can be poured away if that pass marks the soil, unlike sand, which is why lawn roller water or sand matters on a new bed.

What these UK reviews did on new turf

Outsunny reviews mention newly laid lawns and new turf. The eSkde 30 litre and 38 litre rollers appear on new lawns and seed beds, with water called a light fill. On the 38 litre, water was all right for a seed bed and weak at knocking bumps flat. One Outsunny arm snapped within minutes on topsoil soft enough to give under the drum, and a full water fill was too heavy for some conditions. If the soil still shifts under your boots, start about half full and stop when soil piles ahead of the drum.

A hollow is still not this job

A dip you can see from the kitchen is not a seed-contact problem. The Royal Horticultural Society's January advice is to lift the turf, fill underneath, and not roll a hollow flat. A roller takes the edges down with the middle, so the low spot stays. If the hollow is bare soil, add soil and rake before you sow, then use only a light roll for contact. A plot that needs turf lifted is past these drums.

Common questions

Should I roll after sowing grass seed?
Yes. Rake the seed in, then use a light roller in two directions. Lawnsmith's picture is a half-filled water roller, a mower roller, or your feet on a small patch. A full drum is for a dryish ornamental lawn, not loose soil on sowing day. Germination is not guaranteed. If the drum ruts, stop.
How heavy should the roller be on a new lawn?
Half full of water is Lawnsmith's picture for seed. eSkde comments call a water fill light on a seed bed. An Outsunny arm snapped within minutes on very soft topsoil, and one full water fill was too heavy. There is no litre figure for the AL-KO GW50, so do not invent a kilogram. Stop if the surface ruts.
Do I roll before I sow, or after?
Both, and they are different. Firm the soil before you sow, then press the seed afterwards, which is the AL-KO line on amazon.co.uk. The first walk takes fluff out of worked topsoil. The second stays light so you do not seal the surface. If you only manage one walk, make it the light one after the seed is down.
What about newly laid turf?
New turf needs the same light firming as seed, so the roots meet the soil. Outsunny buyers used these drums on newly laid lawns. A full drum is the risky end: one arm snapped within minutes on soft topsoil, and a full water fill was too heavy for some conditions. Settle the joins, then stop. A remaining hollow means you lift the turf.
Can I use my feet instead?
Yes, on a small patch. Lawnsmith names treading, once the seed is raked in, instead of a roller. You can feel when the soil starts to smear. On a whole lawn a half-filled drum is more even, though it still has to stay light. Stop if you are making ruts.
Which listing in this set was bought for a new lawn?
Outsunny reviews mention newly laid lawns and new turf, including a snapped arm on soft topsoil and a full water fill that felt too heavy. eSkde's 30 litre and 38 litre rollers show up on seed beds, with water called light and the 38 litre weak on bumps. Those amazon.co.uk comments are not a ranking. Start light.
