How to use a flat brush

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a flat brush on the table, and the square tip is either laying a clean band or scrubbing a dry edge into a streak. This is how to use a flat brush for a load, a line, a wash, and the wash-up, on water-based paint. It does not rank the sets on the [flat brush comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/flat-brush). If you are still choosing a width or a filament, start with the [flat brush buying guide](/hub/painting-supplies/flat-brush/sub/flat-brush-buying-guide). Peter F. drew the steps from UK coating and paint guidance on 21 October 2026, not from a lab test of any listing. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Load the face or the edge

A flat has two tools in one tip. The broad face lays a band. The square edge draws a line. Both fail if you mash paint up into the ferrule or scrub with a dry tip. For a band, dip so the belly holds paint and the tip stays sharp, then pull the face across in one stroke. For a line, load the blade more lightly and ride the square edge. The edge only stays square if the load is on the blade, not packed against the metal. These sets are short-handled, so the stroke is a table job. Transon states handles of about 5.2 to 8.1 inches. If the tip is already chewed, careful loading will not paint a square edge. None of the eight kept listings is hog. This load is for water-based acrylic, gouache, and emulsion. Cutting in a ceiling is the wrong job, on flat brush or angled sash.

A wash is one wet edge

A flat wash is one continuous wet edge, not a series of dry patches you hope will blend later. Mix more paint than the area looks to need. Set the board on a slight slope. Lay a horizontal stroke with the face, and leave a wet bead along the lower edge. The next stroke goes into that bead while both are wet. At the bottom, blot the brush and lift the last bead. Leave the wash until the sheen goes. That sequence is a watercolour technique, not a test of these sets. Acrylic fails the same way if paint skins over in the heel. On a door you will not tilt the board, but you are still chasing one wet edge.

Soap for water-based, solvent only when the tin says so

Cleaning is the last stroke. For emulsion, Community RePaint's advice is to scrape the paint off, then wash in warm soapy water until it runs clear. The British Coatings Federation says the same split: scrape excess back into the tin, wash water-based paint in soapy water, rinse, reshape, and dry the brush flat or hanging. The Nicpro listing says warm water straight after use, then reshape the tip. It does not give a solvent method for acrylic or emulsion. White spirit belongs only when the tin is oil-based, then soap. Do not pour it down the sink. Ask the council how to dispose of it. Do not stand the brush in liquid. Cling film can hold the same water-based paint overnight, as Dulux and Which describe. A brush you are putting away still gets washed.

Reshape, dry, and ventilate

After the soap, reshape the square tip while it is damp, then dry it flat or hanging, bristles free, not standing on the tip. Standing it on the tip is how a flat becomes a wedge. If a synthetic tip has bent, Dulux says a dip in hot water can help it regain its shape. That will not glue a ferrule back on. Read the VOC label before you start. HSE sheet oce2 wants ventilation for brush work and says not to make a paint mist. Get help if you cannot ventilate solvent paint, or if older paint may contain lead and needs sanding. Keep solvents away from children even if a bullet calls the set a gift. Face-paint wording is not a cosmetic assessment. If the next session uses a different paint, read acrylic or watercolour brush before you dip it.

Common questions

How do I load a flat so the edge stays sharp?
Dip so the belly holds the paint and the square tip stays defined. Pull the face for a band, or ride the edge for a line. Do not pack paint up against the ferrule, and do not scrub once the tip is dry. A tip that is already uneven will not become square because you loaded it carefully.
How do I lay a flat wash without streaks?
Mix enough paint for the whole area, slope the board slightly, and keep a wet bead at the lower edge of each stroke. Join the next stroke into that bead, then blot the brush and lift the last bead. Leave it until the sheen goes. Going back into a wash that has already tightened is what leaves the streak.
How do I clean a flat after emulsion or acrylic?
Scrape the excess back into the tin, then wash in warm soapy water until it runs clear. Rinse, reshape the tip, and dry the brush flat or hanging. Do that straight after use. Warm water is what the Nicpro bullet names. It is not a solvent clean.
When do I need solvent, and where does it go?
You need white spirit only when the tin is oil-based. Wash with soap afterwards. Do not pour white spirit down the sink, and ask the council about disposal. Water-based acrylic, gouache, and emulsion do not need that step. Do not stand the brush in the jar for a long soak.
Can hot water fix a bent synthetic tip?
Dulux says a dip in hot water can help a bent synthetic tip regain its shape. Use it as a short rescue, not as a two-hour soak. It will not repair a ferrule that has already pulled off, and it is not a method for hog, because none of these kept sets is hog.
How should I store a short-handled flat?
Reshape it and dry it flat or hanging, with the tip free. Cling film is only for overnight if you will use the same water-based paint tomorrow. A brush you are putting away still gets washed. These short handles belong on a table, not stored loaded for a ceiling line the next morning.
