Acrylic or watercolour brush

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have one short-handled flat and three tins: acrylic, watercolour, and something that might be varnish or oil. The listing says the set suits all of them. That line is a compatibility list, not a sequence. An acrylic or watercolour brush question is whether one synthetic flat can carry both, or whether yesterday's acrylic will sit in the ferrule and spoil tomorrow's wash. Prices and review counts are on the [flat brush comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/flat-brush). Peter F. used UK paint advice on 21 October 2026. This is not a lab test. What these sets are made of

Every kept listing here is synthetic. Nicpro is taklon. Royal & Langnickel is golden taklon. Transon, Elan, BRITECO, and COGVOHY name nylon. Himmlfel says synthetic without a tighter fibre name. That family is the right one for water-based acrylic, gouache, emulsion, and water-based trim. Dulux says synthetic brushes are for water-based finishes, and that natural bristle swells in water. Sable is not in the basket. Acrylic is alkaline. Golden's Just Paint notes say that high pH strips oils from natural hair and the hair goes brittle. Jackson's Art allows hog for oil and for heavy-body acrylic texture, and it prefers synthetic for acrylic because you clean it often. None of the eight kept listings is hog. Filament does not answer whether yesterday's acrylic will ruin tomorrow's wash. That width choice is the flat brush buying guide.

Why acrylic and watercolour still want two brushes

A synthetic flat can carry water-based paint. It should not carry acrylic and then be asked to behave as a watercolour brush. Just Paint's line is plain: a watercolour brush used with oil or acrylic usually will not perform as a watercolour brush afterwards. If acrylic dries near the ferrule, the heel stiffens and the tip splays. That is the ordinary mistake, not a lab result on these sets. Gouache sits with the water-based paints. If the watercolour edge must stay clean, keep a second flat. Nicpro's sizes 1 to 10, Transon's seven-piece through size 12, or Elan's eight flats can be the acrylic brush. Do not promise they will not shed. If you accept a stiffer heel, one brush is enough. Who should buy which set is the best flat brush set page.

Varnish and oil are not a third watercolour

A varnish brush should stay out of acrylic afterwards, and out of a clean watercolour edge. The wide packs are Royal & Langnickel at 1, 2, and 3 inch, and Transon's ½ inch, ¾ inch, and 1 inch set. The Royal listing names acrylics, varnishes, glazes, watercolours, and adhesives. That bullet means the fibre can meet those materials. It does not mean one brush should meet them in turn. Oil is the hard stop. Nylon and taklon are not hog. Leaving nylon in linseed oil, then washing with brush soap, already pulled bristles from the ferrule in Transon's seven-piece reviews. Solvent cleaning belongs on how to use a flat brush: white spirit only for oil-based paint, then soap, and nothing poured down the sink. BRITECO's reviews describe ferrules pulling off after two washes. Do not pick it as a cheap sacrifice brush without that warning.

What the listings' all-paints line does not prove

Nicpro names watercolour, oil, acrylic, and gouache. Royal & Langnickel lists varnish and adhesive among other media. Transon's inch-set title adds oil and body painting beside bullets that name gouache, acrylic, and watercolour. Those lines offer one set to several buyers. They do not prove a safe order of use, and they do not prove the brush will not shed. Body-paint wording is not a cosmetic assessment. Do not use these flats on skin because a bullet mentioned it. One synthetic flat only if you accept it as an acrylic or gouache brush afterwards. Two flats if the watercolour edge still matters. A third brush, not from this folder, if the tin is thick oil and you wanted hog. Cleaning still happens straight after water-based paint, because a correct fibre does not survive dried acrylic in the heel.

Common questions

Can one taklon flat do acrylic and watercolour?
It can carry both only if you accept that the flat becomes an acrylic brush afterwards. Just Paint says a watercolour brush used in acrylic usually will not perform as a watercolour brush again. If the soft edge still matters, keep a second flat for watercolour. Taklon is the right family for the acrylic. It is not a promise that one brush serves both jobs in turn.
What does acrylic do to natural hair?
Acrylic is alkaline. Golden's notes say that high pH strips oils from natural hair and makes it brittle. Dulux says natural bristle also swells in water. Synthetics resist that chemistry, which is why these taklon and nylon sets are the ones for acrylic. That does not make natural hair a good acrylic brush, and none of these listings is hog.
What if acrylic dries in the ferrule?
The heel stiffens and the tip can splay, which is the caution when a flat is left with acrylic near the ferrule. Wash water-based paint out straight after use, before it dries. A later hot-water reshape will not undo polymer that has already set in the filaments.
Should a varnish brush go back into acrylic or watercolour?
No. A wash or varnish brush should stay out of acrylic afterwards, and it should stay out of a clean watercolour edge. The Royal & Langnickel bullet that lists varnish and watercolour is a compatibility list, not permission to use one brush for both in sequence. Keep the varnish brush for varnish.
Can these nylon sets stand in for hog in thick oil?
No. None of the eight kept listings is hog. Hog is what thick oil and heavy texture want, and it swells in water, which is why it is a poor daily acrylic brush. Nylon left in linseed oil has already been a ferrule failure in Transon reviews. Do not treat a multi-paint bullet as a hog specification.
Does gouache belong with watercolour or with acrylic?
Gouache belongs with the water-based paints. You can use the same synthetic flat for gouache and acrylic if you accept a working brush rather than a pristine watercolour edge. If you need that edge clean, gouache can share the watercolour flat, and acrylic stays on the other one. This page does not invent a separate gouache fibre.
