Dust sheet for stairs: a room sheet is the wrong shape

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are painting the landing, and the sheet you bought for the living room is a 12 ft × 9 ft rectangle that will not lie on a flight. A dust sheet for stairs has to be long and narrow enough to sit on the treads without a fold at the nosing. None of the twelve listings in the [dust sheet comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/dust-sheet) is that runner. Prices were read on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not test these sheets on a flight and does not invent a fall statistic. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

A room sheet bunched on the treads is a trip

A stair runner in the trade lists is about 24 ft × 3 ft, roughly 7.3 m × 0.9 m, narrow so you do not fold it. KEAN links that fold to trips. A 12 ft × 9 ft room sheet is about 3.6 m × 2.7 m. Thrown up a flight, the spare width bunches at the nosing. BuildWiz tells you not to fold a 12×9 onto stairs at all. Safero’s laminated pair, Safero’s plain cotton and the Primes DIY laminate all mention stairs and still sell a room rectangle. Cutting a room sheet gives you a short strip, not a 7.3 m runner. A cotton 24 ft × 3 ft still has no plastic back unless that product says so. Poly-backed runners are not in this table. Merchant prices seen in search, not on these listings, put cotton runners around £7 to £9 and a poly-backed runner around £13 to £21.

Loose polythene is the wrong sheet for stairs

BuildWiz treats polythene on stairs as a non-option. This page will not turn a forum story into a count of falls. Raulde’s six-pack says avoid foot traffic, and each sheet is 12 ft × 10 ft of plain polythene. Caelum Star’s six-pack states 7 micron, says the same about foot traffic, and tells you to bin the sheet. Reviewers say that film blows off and tears. ARVO at 15 micron is still polythene, with no grip claim. SOL states no unfolded size. Tape does not turn loose film into a runner. You can tape a room floor, as the how to use a dust sheet page describes, and the sheet still rucks at every nosing. If paint on a pre-1980s stair may be old and flaking, stop. HSE describes plastic sheeting as containment for leaded paint and says keep children and pregnant women away. Carrying a ladder over a loose sheet is the other stop.

What this set actually offers, and what it does not

Srinivasa is an honest 6 ft × 3 ft pair, £8.49, 3.4 from eight reviews. The bullets name floors, stairs and hallways. Six feet is a few treads, not a flight, and one buyer needed both sheets for the width of a room after misreading the size. A non-slip feel is claimed. Eight reviews are not a stair test. Equip247uk states a poly-laminated backing at £9.15, with a title of 12 ft × 9 ft and a size line of 6 ft × 3 ft. Glamptex’s size line is 9 ft × 5 ft against a 12 ft × 9 ft title, with no backing. The Caelum Star cotton strip is 12 ft × 4 ft, short of 24 ft, with no plastic back. A ProDec Advance 24 ft × 3 ft appears in search and is not scored here.

What to buy when the flight is the job

If the flight is the job, buy a runner this page cannot score: cotton if you accept bleed-through, poly-backed if the carpet has to survive wet paint, and long enough for your flight rather than a generic 24 ft. A small backed patch can catch dust on the bottom two steps. Do not walk loose film, and do not treat the 6 ft × 3 ft pair as the stair solution because it mentions a hallway.

Common questions

Can I throw the room sheet over the stairs?
You can, and you should not. A 12 ft × 9 ft sheet is too wide for a tread, so the spare cloth bunches at the nosing, which is where your foot lands. Trade guidance tells you not to fold a room sheet onto a flight. Safero and Primes DIY mention stairs in titles or bullets and still sell a room rectangle. Cut it down and you have a short strip, not a 24 ft runner, and you have used the sheet the landing floor needed.
Is the plastic multipack safe on treads?
The listings say no. Raulde tells you to avoid foot traffic, and Caelum Star’s 7 micron pack says the same, then tells you to bin the sheet. Loose polythene slips and rucks. ARVO at 15 micron is still film. This page does not quote a forum fall as a statistic. The reason to keep film off the stairs is the slip and the bunching, which the trade guides already treat as a reason to choose a runner.
What size is a stair runner?
The trade size you will see is 24 ft × 3 ft, about 7.3 m × 0.9 m. The narrow width is there so the sheet can lie on the treads without a fold. Measure your own flight before you treat 24 ft as exact. A 12 ft × 4 ft strip is nearer the width and far short of the length. A 6 ft × 3 ft sheet covers a patch of stair, not the flight.
Does this comparison include a 24×3 ft sheet?
No. None of the twelve ASINs is a 24 ft × 3 ft runner, cotton or poly-backed. A ProDec-style 24 ft × 3 ft listing appears in amazon.co.uk search and is outside this table, so it is not scored here. Prices you see on merchant sites for runners are not the prices of the room sheets in the comparison. If that runner is what you need, you are in the wrong basket.
Cotton runner or poly-backed runner?
A cotton runner avoids the fold and still lets paint through if you stand on a drip, because cotton weight is not a barrier. A poly-backed runner adds the plastic layer, and the anti-slip backing on those trade pages is their claim, not a result from this set. Choose cotton for dust on a flight you will not paint wet, and a backed runner when emulsion can hit the carpet. Either way, buy the long narrow sheet this comparison does not stock.
