How to use a dust sheet on floors, sofas and stairs

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have moved the sofa, the tin is open, and the sheet is still in a square on the carpet. How to use a dust sheet is the next half hour: the right sheet for the step you will walk, then a flat lay, then a clear-up that does not throw sanding dust back into the hall. Which product to buy stays on the [dust sheet comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/dust-sheet). Prices below were read on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not run a lab test. Put the right sheet down before you open the tin

Furniture you will not walk can take thin polythene, taped down. Caelum Star’s 7 micron six-pack and Raulde’s six-pack both say avoid foot traffic. A floor you will cross wants laminated cotton, plastic face down, unless the pack says otherwise. That backing is stated on the Safero pair, the Primes DIY laminate, Srinivasa and Equip247uk. Plain cotton has no such line, and reviews say paint goes through when you stand on it. If you are painting the skirting, tape the sheet to the carpet, not to the wood. A dust sheet does not stop dust in the air. HSE’s guidance is about water and extraction at the source. If paint on a pre-1980s door might be old and flaking, stop before you sand it. HSE treats plastic sheeting as containment for leaded paint and says keep children and pregnant women away. If you are still holding three packs, the cotton versus plastic dust sheet page is the material split.

Lay it flat, face the right way, and tape the edges

Shake a cloth sheet outdoors first. Lay a laminate plastic face down and cotton face up, flat, with the edges tucked toward the skirting. Overlap the next sheet. One trade note says at least 150 mm on polythene joins, another about 30 cm on poly-backed sheets. Overlap until the join is covered. Do not treat those two figures as one rule. Tape the perimeter with low-tack tape that will release from your floor. This page does not name a tape brand. On a hard floor, tape to the floor. When you are painting the skirting, tape to the carpet. Reviewers of the 7 micron pack say the sheets blow off, so weigh or tape the corners before you open a window. If you tip a pot, keep your weight off that patch. One Primes DIY reviewer scooped a half-tin off the cotton face. That is one report. Look underneath before you decide the carpet is clear.

Clear up without throwing the dust back

Fold the sheet inward and carry it out. Do not shake it in the hall, and do not dry-brush sanding dust. HSE’s note on dry sweeping is that brushing puts dust back into the air. Damp down a small amount or vacuum it. A household vacuum is still not a control for silica or lead. Wash plain cotton only when that listing says so, and no temperature is printed here. Laminate wash bullets on the Safero pair and the Primes DIY laminate are claims. ProDec says wipe a plastic-backed sheet. Another merchant page says the opposite. Wipe a laminate if you are unsure. Caelum Star’s 7 micron bullets say fold the sheet and bin it.

When this is a job for someone else

Stop when the paint may be leaded, when you are sanding plaster across several rooms, or when the only way up the stairs is a ladder over a loose sheet. A dust sheet does not make that ladder safe. A room sheet bunched on the treads is the wrong shape, which is why the dust sheet for stairs page comes before you tape anything to a flight. If you only have the thin multipack, use it on the furniture.

Common questions

Which face goes down on a laminated sheet?
Put the plastic face towards the floor, or towards the furniture, unless the pack in your hand says otherwise. The cotton face is the side you walk and the side that takes the drip. Safero, Primes DIY, Srinivasa and Equip247uk state a backing in this set. Plain cotton has no plastic face to turn down, which is why standing on it is a different risk. If you cannot tell the faces apart, look for the smoother film and put that against the surface you are protecting.
How do I stop the sheet moving?
Lay it flat, tuck the edges, overlap the joins, and tape the perimeter with low-tack tape. On a skirted wall you are about to paint, tape to the carpet rather than to the skirting. Thin film blows off, so tape or weigh the corners before you open a window. Overlap is the rule; 150 mm and 30 cm appear in different trade notes and are not one standard for every sheet here. A bunched sheet in the middle of the room is a trip, not a tidy edge.
Can I walk on the thin plastic pack?
Not if the listing says otherwise. Caelum Star’s 7 micron six-pack and Raulde’s six-pack both tell you to avoid foot traffic. Reviewers still call those sheets thin and easy to tear. ARVO’s 15 micron pack holds paint while the film stays intact, and it is still polythene. Walk a laminated room sheet if that is what you bought for the floor. Keep the multipack on the sofa and the bookcase.
What do I do with sanding dust at the end?
Fold the sheet inward and take it outside. Do not dry-brush the dust into the hall. HSE guidance treats dry sweeping as a poor way to clear construction dust because it puts dust back into the air. Damp down a small amount or vacuum it. A sheet on the floor is not the control for dust that is already airborne. If the dust may be from old leaded paint, stop and treat it as a containment job, not as a quick sweep.
Can I wash the sheet, or only wipe it?
Wash plain cotton only when that listing claims a wash, and even then no temperature is given on these pages. Wipe a laminated sheet if you are not sure. ProDec says plastic-backed sheets are damp-cloth jobs, while some amazon.co.uk bullets say washable and give no care line. The 7 micron Caelum Star pack says bin it. Do not put a polythene multipack through a machine because a cotton sheet in the same basket is washable.
