Dust sheet buying guide: surface, size, then price

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to open a tin in a British living room, and the sheet in the basket is the one with the most reviews, not the one that matches the carpet. A dust sheet buying guide puts the surface first: what you will walk on, whether a plastic barrier is stated, then the size in metres, and only then the price. The [dust sheet comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/dust-sheet) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings and the two badges. Prices were read on 19 October 2026. Peter F. did not run a lab test. Start with the surface you will walk on

If you will stand on the sheet while emulsion is wet, you want laminated cotton: a cloth face with a polythene back stated on the listing. Plain cotton can catch a light drip, and UK reviews in this set still say emulsion goes through when someone stands on it. Cotton weight is not waterproofing. Furniture you will not walk on can take taped polythene or plain cotton. BuildWiz puts one poly-backed 12 ft × 9 ft at about £12 to £17. That lines up with the Primes DIY laminated sheet at £14.99 and sits under the Safero pair at £26.99. Thin polythene multipacks here are about £3.95 to £6.99: a fair sofa cover, a poor bargain on a floor you will walk. How each material fails is on the cotton versus plastic dust sheet page.

Read the technical size, then add overlap

12 ft × 9 ft is about 3.6 m × 2.7 m, the usual room sheet here. 12 ft × 4 ft is a strip, and 6 ft × 3 ft is a patch. A 24 ft × 3 ft runner is the trade size for stairs, and it is not among these twelve ASINs. Add overlap past the skirting. One trade note says at least 150 mm on polythene joins, another about 30 cm on poly-backed sheets. Those figures are not one standard. Use the technical size when it disagrees with the title. Equip247uk’s title says 12 ft × 9 ft and the size field says 6 ft × 3 ft. Glamptex’s title says 12 ft × 9 ft and the size field says 9 ft × 5 ft. SOL states no unfolded size. Which room-size laminate to open first is on the best dust sheet page.

Thickness is a claim until the listing states it

Only two listings state microns. Caelum Star’s plastic six-pack says 7 micron, single use, and not for foot traffic. ARVO’s three-pack says 15 micron. A packaging table puts 15 micron at the start of light duty. That is not a decorating standard, so heavy duty on SOL’s 160 g four-pack is a title, not a measurement. Reviewers on the thin packs describe tearing while the sheets are unfolded.

Wash claims, and no British Standard

Safero’s laminated pair and the Primes DIY laminated sheet both say washable in a bullet, with no care temperature. ProDec’s FAQ says wipe a plastic-backed sheet. Another merchant page says the opposite, and Screwfix’s Fortress Trade poly-backed sheet is sold as non-washable. Treat the amazon.co.uk line as a claim. Plain cotton listings that say machine-wash still omit a temperature. No British Standard covers a decorator dust sheet. BS 4994 is about reinforced plastic vessels. ARVO’s Watersense field is not a dust-sheet test. Read the bleed-through and tearing complaints before you trust the stars.

Common questions

Do I need cotton, plastic, or a laminated sheet?
You need a laminated sheet, with a polythene back stated on the listing, if you will walk a floor while paint is wet. Plain cotton is for dust and light drips on furniture or a floor you will not stand on. Plain polythene is for surfaces you will not walk, and the thin multipacks in this set say so in their own bullets. Heavier cotton does not replace a barrier.
What size is a room sheet, and what is a strip?
A room sheet in this set is 12 ft × 9 ft, about 3.6 m × 2.7 m, and you still want overlap past the skirting. A 12 ft × 4 ft cotton sheet is a strip, about 3.6 m by 1.3 m. A 6 ft × 3 ft sheet is a patch. A stair runner is longer and narrower, about 24 ft × 3 ft, and that size is not in this comparison.
Why does the title size differ from the technical line?
Amazon listings in this set sometimes print a generous title and a smaller size field. Equip247uk’s title says 12 ft × 9 ft while the size line says 6 ft × 3 ft. Glamptex’s title says 12 ft × 9 ft while the size line says 9 ft × 5 ft. Use the technical line, and treat a pack weight that looks too light for two room sheets as a warning. SOL gives you no unfolded size at all, so extra large cannot be checked before the parcel arrives.
Can I machine-wash a poly-backed sheet?
Treat a wash bullet as a claim. Safero’s laminated pair and the Primes DIY laminated sheet both say washable, and neither gives a temperature. Trade poly-backed sheets, including a Screwfix Fortress example, are often sold as non-washable, and ProDec’s FAQ says you wipe the plastic back with a damp cloth. Plain cotton listings that say machine-wash are closer to what trade guides describe, still without a temperature on these pages.
Is there a British Standard for dust sheets?
No British Standard applies to decorator dust sheets. BS 4994 is about reinforced plastic vessels, and it does not grade the sheet on your floor. ARVO’s Watersense field is not a dust-sheet test either. HSE guidance on construction dust is about stopping dust getting into the air, not about certifying a cover. Buy on the stated barrier, the technical size and the review complaints.
What should I ignore the bestseller rank for?
Ignore it when you are choosing a floor you will walk. The visible top of Painting Drop Cloths & Plastic Sheeting on this capture is thin polythene, including a 7 micron six-pack the listing itself says is not for foot traffic. Popularity is not a floor-sheet test. Use the rank as a hint that a lot of people buy film for furniture, then go back to the surface rule before you put that film on a carpet you mean to keep.
