Emulsion roller or gloss roller

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are painting a bedroom in one weekend: matt emulsion on the walls, and a smaller tin for the skirting or the door. An emulsion roller or gloss roller is not one tool with two names. The wall wants a woven or medium-pile sleeve. The woodwork wants a different sleeve or a brush. The [decorating set comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/decorating-set) ranks the boxes on amazon.co.uk. Here the question is which cover does which job, and what you give up if the box never separates them.

Emulsion wants the medium-pile or woven sleeve

Matt emulsion on plaster wants a medium-pile, sheepskin-type roller. Dulux points a short-pile mohair-type sleeve at silk. A 9 inch sleeve, about 225 mm, covers the open wall. A 4 inch sleeve, about 100 mm, covers the band above the skirting. Fit for the job lists woven 9 inch and 4 inch emulsion rollers, at £11.64 with 4.6 from 4,014 reviews on 19 October 2026. Harris Essentials, at £9.58 with 4.5 from 3,730 reviews, lists a 9 inch emulsion sleeve and a separate 4 inch emulsion sleeve. Neither listing gives the pile in millimetres. Foam stays off that wall. Dulux says foam on normal emulsion leaves an orange-peel film. A rinse cuts loose fluff, and UK reviews still mention lint afterwards.

Woodwork wants a different sleeve or a brush

Skirting and doors are a different paint. Trim sits in a different VOC limit from matt wall paint under Schedule 2 of the 2012 regulations, even when both tins are water-based. Harris Essentials includes a 4 inch gloss sleeve and a gloss brush. The Seriously Good 11-piece, at £12.59 with 4.6 from 45 reviews, lists two 4 inch gloss sleeves. Fit for the job assigns foam minis to gloss, satin, undercoat and primer. That is a listing claim. A Hamilton note, reported by Brush Expert, says foam minis can bubble water-based quick-dry gloss, while another FAQ still prefers foam for gloss. Keep foam off the emulsion. Dulux says natural bristle swells in water, so use a synthetic brush for water-based trim. Cutting in is on the how to paint a room with a roller page.

Kits that do not split the job

The Harris Seriously Good 7-piece, at £10.27 with 4.8 from 255 reviews, is three medium-pile 9 inch sleeves and two brushes, with no gloss sleeve. First listed on 2 December 2025, its trail is shorter than Essentials’ 3,730. It fits walls. Skirting still needs a cover this box does not include. DEKO, at £18.78 with 4.6 from 31 reviews, lists foam covers that are not named gloss sleeves. The suzmei 17-piece at £22.94 includes a sponge roller, also not labelled gloss. The decorating kit buying guide is the checklist. The Seriously Good 11-piece does split the sleeves. One UK review says an Essentials set arrived instead. German texts on that listing are not UK opinion.

When to pick which box

For emulsion only, the Harris 7-piece matches the work, with no cover pretending to be a gloss tool. For walls and woodwork, Harris Essentials at £9.58 includes a named 4 inch gloss sleeve. Fit for the job is the top pick at £11.64 with 4,014 reviews, but its woodwork tool is foam minis you should keep off the wall. The Seriously Good 11-piece at £12.59 suits you when you want two named gloss sleeves and can accept 45 reviews. Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from 19 October 2026.

Common questions

Can one roller paint the walls and the skirting?
The frame can. The sleeve should not. Emulsion and a trim paint are different films, and a sleeve that has carried one will drag the other into the finish. Harris Essentials and the Seriously Good 11-piece are listed with a separate gloss sleeve you can swap onto the same frame.
What sleeve is for emulsion?
A woven or medium-pile sleeve. Dulux points to a medium-pile sheepskin-type roller for matt emulsion, and to a shorter mohair-type pile for silk. In this set that is the woven cover on Fit for the job, the emulsion sleeve on Harris Essentials, or the medium-pile sleeves on the Seriously Good kits. Foam is the cover Dulux tells you to keep off normal emulsion.
Why does the kit include a foam roller?
Because the listing assigns it, not because foam is a settled gloss method. Fit for the job assigns two foam minis to gloss, satin, undercoat and primer. DEKO and suzmei include foam or sponge covers without calling them gloss sleeves. That label does not cancel Dulux’s warning about foam on emulsion.
Is a gloss sleeve the same as a foam sleeve?
No. On Harris Essentials and the Seriously Good 11-piece, a gloss sleeve is a named 4 inch cover listed beside the emulsion sleeves. A foam or sponge roller is a different cover. Some boxes assign it to gloss, and others never use the word. Treating the two names as synonyms is how a foam mini ends up in the emulsion.
Which kits in this set actually split the two jobs?
Harris Essentials at £9.58 and the Harris Seriously Good 11-piece at £12.59 list separate gloss sleeves. Fit for the job at £11.64 assigns foam minis to gloss and woven rollers to emulsion, with the foam warning still in force. The Harris 7-piece has no gloss sleeve. DEKO’s foam covers and the suzmei sponge are not named gloss sleeves.
Do I need a different brush as well?
For water-based trim, yes, when you are cutting in a door or a window. Natural bristle swells in water, so the brush should be synthetic. Harris Essentials includes a gloss brush, and the Seriously Good 11-piece includes a 1 inch woodwork brush. A brush does not replace the wall sleeve.
