Decorating kit: what to buy for walls and skirting

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to paint a spare bedroom: emulsion on the plaster, and gloss or satin on the skirting and the door. On amazon.co.uk a Harris box says seven pieces, and the next tab says twenty or twenty-three. What to buy in a decorating kit is the set of tools that matches those two paints. The piece count is a label on the carton. Peter F., editor for DIY & tools, used amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources on 19 October 2026, with no lab test. The [decorating set comparison](/hub/painting-supplies/decorating-set) ranks the eleven kits. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the box has to contain

A kit for walls and skirting has to cover two paints. You need a 9-inch emulsion sleeve, a frame, a tray, a cutting-in brush, and a second sleeve if the woodwork is in the same weekend. Harris Essentials, about £9.58 with 4.5 from 3,730 reviews, names a 4-inch gloss sleeve as well as emulsion sleeves and three brushes. Fit for the job, about £11.64 with 4.6 from 4,014 reviews, bullets woven emulsion rollers and foam minis that the listing assigns to gloss. The Harris Seriously Good 7-piece, about £10.27 with 4.8 from 255 reviews, is three medium-pile 9-inch sleeves and two brushes, with no gloss sleeve. That 7-piece box still leaves the skirting unpainted unless you already own a brush for wood. The listing text is the contents contract.

Pile and brush, in that order

Check the 9-inch sleeve before you count the brushes. Medium pile, about 9–12 mm as a rule of thumb, is the usual choice for emulsion on plaster. Harris specifies that sleeve for semi-smooth surfaces. Dulux points medium pile at matt emulsion and short pile at silk, and it says foam on ordinary emulsion leaves a cratered film. Fit for the job assigns its foam minis to gloss, so that foam stays off the walls. The brush comes second because the roller cannot cut the ceiling line. Dulux treats a 2-inch or 3-inch brush as the size for walls. A 1-inch brush is slow along the ceiling of a bedroom about 4 metres by 3 metres. Two brushes in the Harris 7-piece help only when one of them is that wider width.

When the piece count is not the contents

Read the title, the model name and one feature bullet as three claims. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects the goods to match the description. APACALI’s title says 22 pieces and the model line says 24, at about £25.99 with one review. 4BAOHUI’s title says 20 and a feature line says 17. Two suzmei listings put 17 pieces in the bullets, while reviews describe a count nearer 23. DEKO prints a parts list and claims no pole. The Harris Seriously Good 11-piece, about £12.59 with 4.6 from 45 reviews, names a medium-pile sleeve and a gloss sleeve. One UK comment says the pictured set did not arrive. German text on that page is not a UK opinion. The best decorating set page names the top pick and the best value.

What you can leave out

A pole, a dust sheet and a sanding block are optional. The Harris kits from about £9.58 to £12.59 include no pole. Zankeox states up to 1 m. That length, plus your arm, reaches a 2.4 m ceiling for many people and runs out in a stairwell. 4BAOHUI states 1.5 m, and UK reviews describe the neck failing. Those lengths sit on the paint roller extension pole page. Fit for the job writes its sheet as 12 ft by 9 ft and then as 37 m by 27 m. Twelve by nine feet is about 3.7 m by 2.7 m. The same page mentions a stirrer for 25-litre tins, while Rodo’s related 10-piece page says 2.5 litres. On a coating that may contain lead, common into the early 1980s, use wet abrasive paper.

Common questions

What has to be in the box for walls and skirting?
You need a 9-inch emulsion sleeve, a frame, a tray, a brush of about 2 or 3 inches, and a second sleeve when the skirting is painted the same weekend. Harris Essentials includes a 4-inch gloss sleeve. The Harris Seriously Good 7-piece has wall sleeves and brushes only, so the trim needs a tool you already own.
Is a 20-piece kit better than an 11-piece Harris?
Only if the extra parts include a sleeve for the second paint. The Harris Seriously Good 11-piece, about £12.59, splits medium-pile and gloss sleeves. 4BAOHUI’s title says 20 and a feature line says 17, at about £23.99. A pole in the larger box still has to survive the snap comments.
Do I need a separate gloss sleeve?
You need a separate sleeve, or a brush kept for woodwork, when the skirting is a different paint from the walls. Fit for the job assigns foam minis to gloss, and Dulux says foam on ordinary emulsion leaves a cratered film, so those minis stay off the walls. Skip the gloss sleeve if you are painting walls only.
Does a decorating set include an extension pole?
Some kits include one. The Harris boxes from about £9.58 to £12.59 do not. Zankeox states up to 1 m, enough with your arm for many 2.4 m ceilings and short in a stairwell. 4BAOHUI states 1.5 m, and UK reviews describe the neck failing. DEKO’s parts list has no pole.
Why do two lines on one listing disagree about the piece count?
The title, the model and a feature bullet are written apart. APACALI says 22 in the title and 24 in the model. 4BAOHUI says 20 and 17. Suzmei bullets say 17 while reviews describe nearer 23. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, the goods should match the description. Trust the parts list you can reconcile.
