Fire pit on a wooden deck spark guard

Updated: 21 October 2026

You want the fire near the decking, the cushions or the children, and a fire pit on a wooden deck spark guard feels like permission. It is not. A spark guard does not make a wooden deck, a balcony or a tight corner a safe place for a fire. Clearance, fuel and supervision come first. This page uses UK fire-service advice and the six screens in our [fire pit spark guard comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-pit-spark-guard), read on amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026. We found no British Standard and no UK-wide deck by-law. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Decking and the three-foot gap come before the screen

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service says avoid placing a fire pit on decking or near trees, sheds or fences. Scottish Fire and Rescue Service says at least three feet, about 90 cm, from fences, sheds, trees, awnings and gazebos, on a non-combustible surface. That figure is fire-service guidance, not a national by-law we found. London Fire Brigade says use level ground rather than decking, and not a balcony. An amazon.co.uk line about wood decks is a product claim, not a clearance. If the deck is the only flat surface, do not light the fire there. Fitting is on the how to fit a fire pit spark screen page.

Fuel, children and putting it out

Burn kiln-dried wood that has not been painted, coated or pressure-treated. Do not burn plastic, rubber, waste, petrol, treated timber or old decking. A smoke control area restricts chimney smoke. It does not approve this screen. Children stay outside a safe zone, with an adult who is not indoors. Mesh does not stop a child pulling a 345 g lid off, and the mesh is hot while the fire is lit. Have water, sand or a hose within reach before you light anything. Put the fire out before bed. On 17 June 2024, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said crews believed embers from a fire pit may have caught an outbuilding. A fridge was another possible cause. The cause was not proved. Extinguish the embers anyway.

What the guard changes

If the screen covers the rim, fewer large sparks should leave through the top. That is the limited job of the mesh. It is not a rain cover: Gatuida is marked not water resistant. It is not a balcony permit. London Fire Brigade's advice against balcony fires still stands. A conditional top pick is on the best fire pit spark screen page. Fit and weight are the buying guide.

What the law still covers

In England, smoke that stops someone using their home, or injures health, can be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and a council can serve an abatement notice. That page is England, not the process in Scotland or Northern Ireland. In England and Wales, Highways Act 1980 section 161A covers smoke that endangers highway users. It is not the law in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Put the fire out before you call anyone. A spark screen is not a summerhouse chimney, which is a building-control project.

Common questions

Can you put a fire pit on a wooden deck if it has a spark guard?
The fire services we read say no. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service says avoid decking. London Fire Brigade says use level ground, not decking, and do not use a barbecue on a balcony. A mesh spark guard does not change that advice. Amazon lines about wood decks are not a fire-service clearance. If the only place you can put the pit is the deck, do not light it there.
How far should it sit from a fence, shed, tree or awning?
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service says at least three feet, about 90 cm, from fences, sheds, trees, awnings, gazebos and some wood finishes, on a stable non-combustible surface. London Fire Brigade's incident advice uses the same three-foot figure. That is fire-service guidance, not a by-law distance we found for the whole UK. Well away, on the brigade's barbecue page, is the looser wording for sheds, fences and trees. Keep the gap even if a screen is fitted.
Does mesh stop sparks reaching cushions?
A screen that covers the rim can reduce larger sparks. It does not stop every spark, and the listings we read do not print a stop rate. Cushions, parasols and dry furnishing still need distance. A gap under a badly fitting lid is a path for sparks whatever the mesh claims. Children and soft furnishings stay outside a safe zone you can supervise.
What may you burn, and what is out?
Use kiln-dried wood that is not painted, coated or pressure-treated, and follow the pit's own instructions. Do not burn petrol, plastic, rubber, household waste, treated timber or old decking. A smoke control area limits chimney smoke. It does not turn a garden fire pit into an approved appliance.
What do you do about smoke and neighbours in England?
If smoke stops a neighbour using their home, or injures health, it can be a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. In England a council can serve an abatement notice. Talk to the neighbour and put the fire out before it reaches that point. The GOV.UK nuisance page used here is England. It is not automatically the process in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Welsh fire-service advice is still to extinguish a fire that is spoiling someone's home.
What if smoke reaches a road?
Put the fire out. GOV.UK says you can be fined if smoke drifts across a road and endangers traffic. In England and Wales, Highways Act 1980 section 161A covers a fire whose smoke endangers highway users, with a level 5 fine. That section is not the law in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
