Fire pit spark guard buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already own a wood or charcoal pit and you want a mesh spark guard that stays on that rim. Fit comes before a stainless claim, a star line or the price. This fire pit spark guard buying guide uses that order: fit, then shape, then metal and weight, then how you lift it, then price. The six listings in our [fire pit spark guard comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-pit-spark-guard) were read from amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the rim before you read the title

Start with the opening the screen has to cover, not the title. Too small, and the screen can drop into the fire. Much too large, and it will not locate. There is no add-four-inches rule for these six listings. Two printed sizes are a reason to measure first. Harbour's bullets say 73×73×17 cm and the attributes say 2×72.5×23 cm. A UK review of a bundle said the guard did not fit. BESTOMZ is 42×42 cm with no pit diameter. Esschert prints 22×58×58 and also 58.4×22.9 cm. JXLXYY's 22 in title is 55.9 cm. Hydream's 24 in title is 61 cm. Shape is next, on the dome or half-round screen page.

Dome, lid or half-round screen

A round dome or lid sits across a circular opening. Harbour, BESTOMZ, Gatuida, JXLXYY and Hydream are that kind of cover. The Esschert FF85 is a half-round wire screen for a fire bowl, not a round lid. Amazon.co.uk lists 3 kg. The maker's page says mild steel for a 60 cm bowl and a net weight of 1.675 kg. Keep both weights. One side of the bowl stays open. A 42 cm lid will not span a 60 cm bowl. The tape is on the how to fit a fire pit spark screen page.

Metal, weight and a way to lift it

Painted or powder-coated steel is the usual metal, and heat works on the coating. UK reviews of the Harbour dome describe holes after two or three fires and rust after a night outside. UK reviews of the Esschert say the grey coat will not keep its colour unless you add heat-proof paint yourself. That paint is not in the box. None of the six prints a mesh hole size. The mesh is hot while the fire is lit. Harbour has a top handle, JXLXYY a metal ring, and Hydream's title names a handle and a poker. BESTOMZ, Gatuida and the Esschert listing do not name a handle. Plan a glove or a long-handled tool.

What the price bands can and cannot tell you

BESTOMZ at £15.29 and Gatuida at £17.79 have no star line. Both are 42 cm and 345 g. Those prices buy a small lid with no review file, not a tested screen for a 60–75 cm pit. A higher price is not a lab win. Mesh does not put a fire out or make smoke legal. Common questions

What should you check before the price?
Check the rim first, then the shape, then the metal and the printed weight, then how you will lift a hot screen. A £15.29 lid and a £61.25 stainless screen are not alternatives until both can sit on the opening you measured. A 4.5 score does not correct a screen that is 42 cm across a much wider pit. Stars come after the fit, not before it.
What happens if the screen is smaller than the opening?
It can fall into the fire instead of resting on the rim. A screen that is much too large has the opposite fault: it will not locate, so it rocks and leaves a gap for sparks. Match the line on the listing to the rim you measured. Do not add a fixed overlap copied from a US chart or from another maker's own pits.
Is a half-round bowl screen the same object as a round dome?
No. The Esschert FF85 is a half-round wire screen for a fire bowl, and one side stays open. Harbour, BESTOMZ, Gatuida, JXLXYY and Hydream are round domes, lids or round screens meant to sit across a circular rim. A 42 cm lid does not cover a 60 cm bowl. A half-round screen does not replace a dome on a 75 cm pit.
Should you pay for stainless only when the size matches?
Painted and powder-coated steel in this set is what UK reviews describe rusting or losing colour in the fire. The Hydream bullets say 304 stainless at £61.25 and 61 cm, with 4.5 from 248 reviews and no UK review in the sample we read. That claim is worth reading only if 61 cm is your opening. Stainless does not fix a wrong diameter, and the listing has no mill certificate.
Does a heavier screen matter in wind, and is 345 g heavy duty?
A heavier screen is harder for wind to shift, so use the printed weight. BESTOMZ and Gatuida are 345 g, and one listing still says heavy-duty steel. That lid is easy to move in a gust. It is not a heavy screen. Esschert's amazon.co.uk line says 3 kg and the maker's net is 1.675 kg, so do not treat 3 kg as settled.
Can you treat a 4.5 score as UK experience, and does mesh make the fire legal?
JXLXYY's 4.5 from 151 reviews and Hydream's 4.5 from 248 reviews are amazon.co.uk averages. The samples we read are not United Kingdom opinion. Harbour's 4.2 from 74 and Esschert's 4.3 from 361 do include UK text, including complaints. Mesh does not put the fire out, keep rain out, or make a smoky fire legal. Gatuida is marked not water resistant, which matches what open mesh does in the rain.
