Fire pit spark screen dome or half round

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are looking at two products with similar names, and one of them will not cover the fire you already own. A round dome or lid sits across a circular rim. The Esschert FF85 is a half-round wire screen for a fire bowl, and it leaves one side open. They are different objects. This page is the fire pit spark screen dome or half round choice inside the six listings in our [fire pit spark guard comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-pit-spark-guard), from amazon.co.uk on 20 October 2026. No listing prints a mesh hole size or a British Standard. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

A half-round bowl screen is not a dome

The Esschert FF85, ASIN B000X9CSH6, is sold as a spark guard only, in powder-coated metal wire, at £39.99. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 from 361 reviews, and that file includes UK text. The maker's page calls it a half-round spark screen for a 60 cm fire bowl, about 23.6 inches, in mild steel. The box is the guard, not a pit and not a full circular lid. One face of the bowl stays open, which is how sparks can still leave on that side. UK reviews say it keeps sparks off artificial grass. That is a comment, not a measured stop rate. More reviews do not turn the FF85 into a dome.

A hinged dome is a third object

US catalogues often contrast a dome with a hinged dome, or a sliding half that still covers the pit when it is shut. That is a third object. It is not the Esschert bowl screen, and it is not in these six listings. If the page shows a door in a round lid, you have left this comparison.

What the round listings cover

A round screen in this set sits across the opening. It does not wrap one side of a bowl. The Harbour dome is stated for a 75 cm Harbour pit, with bullets of 73×73×17 cm and a top handle. The attribute line says 2×72.5×23 cm, so the shape can be right and the diameter still wrong. BESTOMZ and Gatuida are round 42 cm steel lids at 345 g. Neither names a pit diameter, so neither covers a 60 cm bowl or a 75 cm pit. JXLXYY is a round screen at 55.9 cm. Hydream is a round screen at 61 cm, sold as four pieces. None of those four is a half-round bowl screen.

When the FF85, and when a dome

Choose the Esschert FF85 when you have a fire bowl around 60 cm and you accept a half cover in mild steel. Do not merge Amazon's 3 kg line with the maker's net of 1.675 kg. Heat-proof paint, if you want the colour to last, is not in the box. The maker's mild-steel line is coated steel, not a stainless dome. Choose a round dome or lid when the screen has to sit across the whole rim. For a Harbour-size pit, the conditional top pick on the best fire pit spark screen page is the Harbour dome, rust and fit complaints included. About 61 cm and a stainless claim points to Hydream. About 42 cm points to the shallow lids, which have no star line. A half-round screen does not stand in for a dome on a 75 cm pit. Measuring is on the how to fit page. The order of decisions is the buying guide.

Common questions

Is a half-round spark screen a dome with a door?
No. The Esschert FF85 is a half-round wire screen for a fire bowl, and one side stays open. A hinged dome, or a sliding panel that still covers the pit when it is closed, is a different product from US catalogues. It is not one of these six listings. More reviews on the FF85 do not turn it into a full circular lid.
What pit is the Esschert FF85 for?
The maker says a 60 cm fire bowl, about 23.6 inches, in mild steel. Amazon.co.uk lists it at £39.99 with 4.3 from 361 reviews. The size lines do not match each other: bullets 22×58×58, attributes 58.4×22.9 cm, title 9×23×23 in, maker 59.6×59.6×21.5 cm. UK reviews often say nearer 60 cm. Use it for a bowl around that size, and check the parcel against the line you trusted.
Why do the Amazon size and the maker size disagree?
They are two published figures for the same model, and this page does not pick a winner without the parcel. Amazon prints 22×58×58 in the bullets and 58.4×22.9 cm in the attributes. The maker prints 59.6×59.6×21.5 cm for a 60 cm bowl. UK reviews often land nearer 60 cm, which is reviewer measurement, not a lab test. Measure your bowl, then compare the guard you receive with that bowl.
Why is the Amazon weight 3 kg if the maker says about 1.7 kg?
Amazon's item weight for the FF85 is 3 kg. The maker's page says a net weight of 1.675 kg and a gross weight of 1.991 kg. Those numbers conflict, and combining them into one about-2 kg figure would hide the gap. If you need a heavy screen against wind, confirm the weight on the parcel. Do not assume the 3 kg line is the screen you will lift.
Will the half-round screen stop every spark?
No. The bullets do not state a stop rate, and a half-round screen leaves one side of the bowl open. UK reviews say sparks were kept off artificial grass. That is not a test, and it is not a claim that every ember stops. None of the six listings prints a mesh hole size. A screen that fits still lets small sparks through. A 42 cm lid cannot sit across a 60 cm bowl.
