How to use a fire basket

Updated: 21 October 2026

You already have a fireplace grate, or the folding mesh pit, and the first fire is the one that fills the room with smoke or drops embers. Ash against the bars, wet wood, or a mesh that has already holed undoes the point of the product. This is how to use a fire basket: air under the fuel, dry fuel, and a stop when the metal or the flue is no longer doing that job. The nine listings sit on the [fire basket comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-basket). Public UK fire guidance and the amazon.co.uk reviews were read on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test. Light a fireplace grate

Clear the grate and empty the ash pan first. The Solid Fuel Association says ash must not touch the fire bars, or the bars burn away. HETAS says the same for mineral fuel. On the JVL, one review says a standard ash pan will not fit. On the AB Tools 14 inch grate, a review says the front legs are too close. Measuring that gap is on fire grate size for fireplace. Lay kindling with gaps and a firelighter. Do not use petrol. Torbay Council says keep the stack loose. An open grate has no stove door, so do not copy a damper setting onto it.

Coal and smokeless fuel

Coal wants air from below. The Solid Fuel Association tells you to poker the clinker so it does not seal the grate. On the AB Tools 12 inch grate, a review says modern smokeless fuel can buckle it. On the Fire Vida at £18.99, several reviews describe burn-through within a few months. A grate that no longer holds its shape should come out.

The folding pit

Open the VonLux on a stable, non-combustible surface, not on decking and not in long dry grass. Reviews say the clips can slip. Gloves named in the bullets were missing for at least one buyer.

When you stop

HETAS says never leave an open fire unattended without a spark guard, and use a fireguard when children are in the house. The guard is not in these boxes. Torbay says not to bank a wood fire overnight. Stop and get a competent person when smoke comes back into the room or the fireback is cracked. A new grate does not repair a blocked chimney. Waste and roads are on fire basket garden rules.

Common questions

How do I light a grate?
Empty the ash so it cannot touch the bars, then lay kindling with gaps and a firelighter. Add small, dry logs only once the kindling is going. The Solid Fuel Association warns that ash against the bars burns them away. Do not use petrol. An open grate has no stove door, so do not copy damper settings from a wood-burner guide. Keep the fire bright rather than smouldering, and stay with it.
Does the start change for coal or smokeless fuel?
Yes. Coal needs air from below, so a full ash pan is the wrong start. Clear the pan, poker the clinker, and do not let ash seal the underside of the grate. Smokeless fuel shows up in reviews as heat that buckles light castings. That is a reason to watch a 3 kg grate, not a reason to leave the fire banked. The wood start is still kindling and a firelighter, without accelerant.
How full should the ash pan be?
Empty it before the ash touches the underside of the grate. HETAS states that for mineral fuel, and the Solid Fuel Association states it so the bars do not burn away. A pan that will not slide under the legs cannot do this job. On the JVL, one review says a standard pan will not fit. On the AB Tools 14 inch grate, a review says the front legs are too close. Measure the gap. Do not wait until the pan is heaped.
Can I leave it overnight?
Do not bank a wood fire and leave it. Torbay Council says not to. HETAS says not to leave an open fire unattended without a spark guard, and to use a fireguard when children are in the house. The guard is a separate buy. Let the fire burn down, keep ash off the bars, and empty the pan only when it is cold, into a metal container outside.
What must I not burn?
Do not burn petrol, treated or painted wood, household waste, or wet logs. In England, wood sold in volumes under 2 cubic metres should be at or below 20 per cent moisture under the Ready to Burn rules. Larger loads come with a drying notice. Pallet wood and old furniture are the wrong fuel on a grate or a mesh pit. Garden waste that is wet belongs on the compost heap, which the garden-rules page covers with the statute.
What if the mesh already has a hole?
Stop using it. Reviews of the VonLux report holes after one or two fires, and a hole drops embers on the ground. Clips that slip and ash that clogs the mesh are separate problems you can check before you light. A hole is not. Do not patch it and carry on. The pit has stopped keeping the fire off the surface it stands on.
When do I call someone about the chimney?
When smoke comes back into the room, when the fireback is cracked, or when you do not trust the flue. A replacement grate will not clear a blockage. Have the chimney looked at before you light another fire. Sweeping and flue repairs are not a weekend job with a new basket. If you are unsure the flue is sound, leave it unlit.
