Fire basket buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have searched for a fire basket because the hearth needs a grate, or because you want a fire on the patio, and the results mix both jobs. A fireplace grate, a garden cage and a folding mesh pit are three products. This fire basket buying guide is the sequence: the job, then the opening, then the kilograms, and only then the price. The nine amazon.co.uk listings, from £13.75 to £28.50, are on the [fire basket comparison](/hub/outdoor-fire-pits/fire-basket). The Products Compared editorial team read those listings and public UK pages on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test. Three products, one name

A fire basket, in a fireplace shop, is a fire grate: a raised, slotted platform so air can reach the fuel from below. Direct Fireplaces describe it that way. Eight of the nine listings here are hearth grates. Corten garden cages are not in this set. The VonLux is the third product: a stainless mesh pit at 690 g and £13.75, for the garden, camping and picnics. Sort the job before the stars.

Fuel, then weight

Coal and smokeless fuel punish a light casting in the reviews. Direct Fireplaces say cast iron suits hotter fuel, including coal, and that steel is often cheaper and suited to wood. That is a retailer line, not a British Standard. The JVL prints 5.35 kg. The Thorness prints 4.9 kg. The Inglenook and both AB Tools grates print 3.12 kg. The Fire Vida listings print 3 kg and 2.88 kg. The Almineez prints no weight. The JVL bullets say cast iron and the material field says stainless steel. The AB Tools pages agree on cast iron. The Fire Vida bullets say cast iron and the field says metal.

Indoor, outdoor, or not stated

A garden fire still needs a listing that says outdoor. Waste, roads and siting are on fire basket garden rules. GOV.UK allows outdoor barbecues, chimineas and garden bonfires in a smoke control area, and it treats chimney smoke as a separate rule. The Thorness title, the Almineez bullets, the £18.99 Fire Vida and the VonLux name outdoor use. The Inglenook field says indoor. The JVL and both AB Tools grates are fireplace parts.

What to check before you pay

Measure the opening at the front, at the rear and in depth, because firebacks taper. The inch in a title is usually the opening. Worked examples are on fire grate size for fireplace. Direct Fireplaces recommend at least 3 inches of clearance a side. That is their method, not a British Standard. On the AB Tools 14 inch grate the bullets say 12 × 26 × 36 cm and the technical line says 38 × 28 × 12 cm. Do not average them. Price comes last, from £13.75 to £28.50.

Common questions

Is a fire basket the same thing as a fire grate?
In a fireplace shop, yes. Direct Fireplaces define a fire basket as a raised, slotted grate in a masonry opening. On amazon.co.uk the same words also cover a folding mesh pit, and garden shops use them for an open cage that is not in this set. Eight of these nine listings are hearth grates. The VonLux at 690 g is the pit. Read the type line before you compare the price.
Should I buy cast iron if I burn coal or smokeless fuel?
Fireplace retailers treat cast iron as the material for hotter fuel, including coal, and they treat cheaper steel as a wood grate. In this set the evidence is the reviews, not a lifespan promise. Lighter grates around 3 kg draw comments about thin bars, buckling and burn-through on coal or smokeless fuel. The JVL at 5.35 kg is the heaviest listing, and its bullets name those fuels, though the material field says stainless steel while the bullets say cast iron.
Why do some listings say cast iron and metal at the same time?
The bullets and the material field are written separately, and on several of these pages they do not match. The JVL bullets say cast iron with a black powder coat and the field says stainless steel. The Fire Vida bullets say cast iron and the field says metal. The AB Tools pages agree on cast iron. When the two lines conflict, the listing has not told you which metal is in the box.
Is the heavier grate the safer buy?
Heavier is a comparison inside this set, not a safety test. The JVL prints 5.35 kg and the Thorness prints 4.9 kg, against a cluster at about 3 kg and the VonLux at 690 g. Reviews on the lighter fireplace grates describe bars failing or metal buckling. Nothing here was burned in a lab, and a heavy grate with a conflicting material field is still a conflicting listing. Use the kilograms to reject a light coal grate, then read the page.
Can I use any of these outside?
Only the listings that say so. The VonLux, the Thorness title, the Almineez bullets and the £18.99 Fire Vida name outdoor use. The Inglenook field says indoor. The 18 inch Fire Vida does not answer the question. A smoke control area does not, by itself, ban a garden fire. A fireplace grate with no outdoor line is the wrong object for the patio.
What should I measure before I order?
Measure the opening at the front, at the rear and in depth, then the ash pan if you already own one. The titled inch is the opening the grate is sold for, not a promise that the metal is that wide. On these pages the centimetre lines often disagree with each other, so quote both and do not average them. The worked examples for 14, 16 and 18 inch openings are on the size page.
