How to fit a reusable respirator

Updated: 21 October 2026

The box is already open on the bench, the cottons are in a bag, and you are about to sand or spray before the room airs. By the end you should know how to put the mask on, how to check the seal, when to change a filter, and when to stop. A seal check every time is not a fit test. A mask you lift in the dust is not protecting you. The [respirator mask comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/respirator-mask) is where the eleven listings sit. Peter F. followed HSE wording for reusable facepieces on 20 October 2026. We did not fit-test these masks on a wearer. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before it goes on your face

Look at the straps and the clip before you look at the cottons. A LAMANICE 5N11 reviewer found the neck clip broken out of the box, so there was no seal, and another clip broke after a single use. A Faburo buyer says the rear clasp broke after two uses on both masks. A Facemoon filter mount snapped when the mask was dropped, and a TYAKRI neck clip snapped on day two. If the clip is already in two pieces, fitting technique will not invent a seal. Return it or replace the part before you stand in the dust. Skin for a tight mask needs to be clean, dry and clean-shaven where the seal sits. Stubble and beards break that seal. One vvuvnem reviewer reported contact dermatitis inside the mask line after a third short wear. If your skin is already reacting, take it off.

The powered visor is the odd one out

The Trend AIR/PRO/D2 is a powered visor, not a tight nose cup. Charge it and confirm the fan runs before you start cutting. A running fan does not repair a missing filter. This listing’s THP2 row is a class on the product, not a personal fit result. If the headband, stated as 52–62 cm in the bullets, will not sit, stop and do not force it.

The check you do every time

HSG53 describes a pre-use check for a tight unpowered respirator. Follow the leaflet in your box if it gives a method. Where the leaflet is missing, put the mask on, tighten the straps evenly, and cover the filter or the inlet with your hand. Breathe in. The mask should suck onto the face and stay there for about ten seconds. If it loosens, readjust once. If it still will not hold, do not use it. INDG479 says that check is not a fit test. Tight on the nose is not a seal if air still leaks at the cheek. If you have to break the seal to clear the lenses, change shape on half mask or full-face respirator.

Filters, cleaning, and when to stop

Change a particle filter when breathing gets harder, when it is damaged or visibly dirty, or when it is past the date. Most of these tables do not print a maker interval, so that harder-breathing cue is the one you can use. Do not treat a 200 hours line on a TYAKRI bullet as an HSE interval, and do not wash cottons and put them back. Smell on a gas or combined filter is breakthrough. If you smell solvent or resin, leave. One LAMANICE 2097 reviewer still smelled resin through the filters. The filter family for that smell is on respirator for spray painting. Clean the facepiece with the filters off. If the listing gives no method, use mild soap and water on the facepiece only, rinse, and dry it fully. Store it away from solvent and dust. At work, a broken seal or a substance you cannot name is the point you call the person responsible.

Common questions

Is a ten-second seal check the same as a face fit test?
No. INDG479 treats the pre-use seal check as something you do every time, and a fit test as a separate check that one model and size matches that wearer. The ten-second inhale does not substitute for a workplace fit test. Loose-fitting powered hoods are the case where a fit test is not required. A tight mask, including a full-face mask, still depends on the seal.
Can I wear this with a beard?
A tight half mask or full-face mask needs a seal on skin. HSE guidance is that beards and stubble break that seal. A review that says the straps still covered a beard is not a fit result. If you will not shave the seal area, a tight mask in this set is the wrong tool. A loose powered visor is the shape that avoids a nose seal, and it still has to be the right filter for the dust or vapour.
What do I do if the neck clip is already broken?
Stop. A LAMANICE clip broken out of the box meant no seal, and a Faburo clasp that fails after two uses does the same. Covering the filters and breathing in will only confirm the leak. Do not tape the clip and carry on in the dust. Replace the mask or the broken part, then repeat the seal check on the repaired unit.
When do I change the cotton or the cartridge?
Change particle filters when breathing gets harder, when they are damaged or visibly dirty, or when they are past the date. For gas filters, smell means you have reached breakthrough and you leave. Do not plan to finish the coat once you can smell it. An hour-count printed only in a bullet is not a reason to ignore harder breathing or a smell.
When do I stop and leave the job?
Leave if you cannot get a seal, if the clip has failed, if breathing becomes hard through a new filter, or if you smell the solvent or resin. Leave if your skin swells or itches inside the mask line, as in the vvuvnem dermatitis report. Leave if you are about to lift the mask to look at the work while the dust or mist is still in the air. Open the windows and step out first.
