Respirator for spray painting

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to spray a cupboard door in a spare room, and the mask in the drawer is a dust cotton from a sanding job. By the end you should know when a brush needs no respirator, which filter family spray solvent asks for, and when a cartridge mask is the wrong tool. A particle pad does not stop vapour. The [respirator mask comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/respirator-mask) is the eleven listings, and none of the cheap tables print A2 or P3. Peter F. followed HSE pages on 20 October 2026. Brush, spray, and what is in the air

HSE’s construction paint FAQ draws a line you can use at home. Brushing or rolling a low-VOC paint, in a room you can ventilate, often needs no respirator. Spraying makes a mist, and solvent-borne paint also puts organic vapour in the air. For a short job, up to about an hour, HSE’s supplier-style answer is a half mask or a full-face mask with replaceable A2P3 filters. Longer spraying points to a powered visor with TH-marked A2P3. Ventilation still comes first. HSG53 says particle filters are not the answer to mist from organic solvents. Wood dust is a different job. Who the top pick is for that dust is on best reusable respirator mask.

The filter mark, not the cotton code

A2P3 is HSE’s combined example: organic vapour, capacity 2, plus a P3 particle filter. You should be able to read that on the filter or the box. The LAMANICE half mask with eight 5N11 cottons says the filters block 97% of organic vapours, fumes, pollen and dust, and the table does not print A2 or P3. One 2097 reviewer still smelled resin through the filters. Smell is breakthrough, so you leave. A 40 mm canister, and a title that says dust and paint or gas mask, is not an A2 mark. None of these eleven is an A2P3 mask on the page you can check. The Trend AIR/PRO/D2 prints THP2 for wood dust, including MDF on Trend’s filter page. For spray paint that row is the wrong family. A powered visor for longer spraying needs TH-marked A2P3, and NRR 22 dB on the muffs does not filter vapour.

When a cartridge mask is the wrong tool

Two-pack paints and isocyanate coatings are a different rule. HSE’s motor-vehicle repair page says filtering respirators are not suitable for isocyanate spraying. The control is air-fed breathing apparatus, with an assigned protection factor of at least 20, worn as the maker specifies. INDG388 tells you not to lift the visor while mist is still in the air. None of the eleven ASINs here is air-fed breathing apparatus. A full-face title that says gas mask does not become an airline mask. Do not spray a two-pack isocyanate in a spare room with a cotton kit from this comparison. A Faburo review about an asbestos garage roof is not approval for fibre work, and it is not approval for paint. High solvent in a small enclosed space is the airline case, not a tighter strap.

Ordinary solvent spray in this folder

For ordinary solvent spray that is not isocyanate, HSE’s short-job example is a replaceable A2P3, after ventilation, for up to about an hour. These listings do not print A2P3. Buying one because the title says paint, then spraying until you smell it, fails the breakthrough rule. If you smell resin or solvent, leave the room and do not lift the mask on the way out. That stop is on how to fit a reusable respirator. Do not invent the class from a 97% bullet. Brush or roll where the coating allows it.

Common questions

Do I need a respirator to brush a wall with ordinary emulsion?
Often no. HSE’s paint FAQ says brush or roller work with low-VOC paint frequently needs no mask, provided you can ventilate. Read the tin. If it is a low-VOC emulsion and the room has air movement, the controls are the paint and the window. Spraying that same wall, or switching to a solvent coating, changes the question. A dust mask left over from sanding is still the wrong tool for solvent vapour.
What filter family is for solvent spray?
HSE’s combined example is A2P3: organic vapour capacity 2, plus P3 for the mist. For short spraying, up to about an hour in poor air, the construction FAQ points to a half or full-face mask with replaceable A2P3. For longer spraying it points to a powered visor with TH-marked A2P3. Lower-solvent intermittent work is sometimes given as A1P3. Match the letter and the number on the filter to the tin, after you have ventilated.
Is the Trend Airshield the right mask for spray paint?
Not on this listing. The table prints THP2, and Trend’s UK page for the matching dust filters talks about solid wood dust, including MDF, at APF 20. It does not say the visor stops paint solvent. A powered visor for longer spraying, in HSE’s paint FAQ, needs TH-marked A2P3 filters. NRR 22 dB on the muffs is irrelevant to vapour. Use the Trend for the wood-dust job it is marked for.
What is different about two-pack or isocyanate paint?
Filtering respirators are not suitable. HSE requires air-fed breathing apparatus for isocyanate spraying, at APF at least 20, and you stay in it through the clearance time. Lifting the visor to check the finish while mist remains is the mistake INDG388 names. None of these amazon.co.uk kits is air-fed breathing apparatus. A cartridge that smells all right for a moment is not a substitute.
I can still smell resin through the filters. What does that mean?
It means the filters are not holding the vapour back, and you should get out of the air. One LAMANICE 2097 reviewer reported a fairly strong resin smell and only ok comfort for the money. Smell is breakthrough, not a signal to spray faster and finish. Change to a filter that states a gas class, or stop using a particle cotton for that resin. Do not wash the cotton and try again.
