Reusable respirator buying guide

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are sanding a cupboard in a UK garage, or lining up a spray gun, and the amazon.co.uk title says gas mask, 97%, or dual filtration. This reusable respirator buying guide puts one question first: the hazard, then a mark you can read, then fit and eyes, and only then the basket. The [respirator mask comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/respirator-mask) holds the eleven listings, from £14.99 to £474.99. This page does not name a top pick. Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk tables and public HSE guidance on 20 October 2026. We did not lab-test these masks. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the hazard

HSE’s choosing page asks you to match the wearer, the task and the environment before you pick a model. Sanding MDF and cutting timber put particles in the air. Spraying solvent paint, or working with many resins, puts vapour in the air as well as mist. HSG53 states that particle filters do not protect against gas or vapour, and that gas filters do not protect against particles. HSE’s combined example, when both are present, is A2P3. A title that says dust and paint has not settled that split. Filtering RPE is not for confined spaces or oxygen-poor air.

Read a standard, not a percentage

On the eleven tables captured on 20 October 2026, only the Trend AIR/PRO/D2 prints a class, and that class is THP2. Trend’s UK page for the AIR/P/1 filters describes TH2P-S to BS EN 12941 for solid wood dust, including MDF, with APF 20 in the filter title. The other ten tables do not print EN 140, EN 136, P3 or A2. GOV.UK allows UKCA or CE marking for PPE on the Great Britain market. A missing line is a gap, and a star rating does not fill it. A 97% bullet, an asbestos phrase, or a title that says nuclear is not a class in the table. If your workplace already named EN 140 plus P3, leave this set. Who stays inside the folder is on best reusable respirator mask.

Fit and eyes

A standard you can read still has to meet your face. INDG479 separates a fit test, which checks that one model and size matches that wearer, from the seal check you do every time. Stubble and beards break a tight seal. LJJYIJUN and vvuvnem reviews say a smaller face sealed and a larger face did not. One vvuvnem reviewer reported contact dermatitis inside the mask line after a third short wear. That is a reason to stop. A half mask leaves the eyes to separate goggles. Goggles in a £16.97 or £17.90 LAMANICE box are not an EN 166 claim. Spectacles often will not pass under a full-face seal. That shape is on half mask or full-face respirator.

Price last, and when to stop

Price is last because a cheap seal that leaks is more expensive than a mask you leave in the basket. The entry band is £14.99 to £19.99, with large review files and empty class rows. Full-face rows from £23.99 to £33.99 include two Bryze listings whose 5.0 scores rest on one and two reviews. Use the price to choose among masks that already match the hazard, or to decide that none of them do. Donning and the ten-second seal check sit on how to fit a reusable respirator once a box is open. If the dust might be asbestos, the air might be short of oxygen, or nobody has done a COSHH assessment, stop.

Common questions

What should I decide before I look at the price?
Name the task, the substance and how long you will keep the mask on. Dust points you to a particle filter. Solvent and many resin vapours point you to a gas or combined filter. HSE puts RPE after ventilation, and filtering RPE is not for a confined space. Only after that do you read the standard line, check whether the mask can seal on your face, and see whether your eyes need cover. A £14.99 kit and a £474.99 visor are comparable only after those answers exist.
Does a particle pad stop paint solvent or resin vapour?
No. HSG53 states that particle filters do not protect against gas or vapour. A cotton marked 5N11 or 2097 on these amazon.co.uk kits is a particle pad in the box list, not an A2 cartridge. One LAMANICE 2097 reviewer still smelled resin through the filters. If you can smell the solvent, you are past the point where that pad is protecting you, and you leave the job rather than finishing the pass.
What does APF 20 mean, and when does APF 40 apply?
APF 20 and APF 40 are HSE assigned protection factors for specified types of RPE, not a score on a review. Sheet R3 includes an EN 140 half mask with P3, and a TH2 powered hood, at APF 20. Sheet R4 includes an EN 136 full-face mask with P3 at APF 40. The factor assumes the right filter and a fit on that wearer. A table that does not print those standards does not inherit the factor.
When is a powered visor the better question?
HSG53 points to powered RPE when tight unpowered masks would be worn for more than about an hour without a break, and when a beard or spectacles stop a face seal. In this set the Trend AIR/PRO/D2 is the powered visor, with THP2 in the table, at £474.99. It is a dust question. It is not the answer to solvent spray, which needs a gas filter class the Trend row does not print.
Who should stop and get a COSHH assessment?
Stop if people are at work and nobody has matched the substance, the exposure and the RPE. Stop if the dust may be asbestos, silica or lead, if the space is confined or low in oxygen, or if the coating is two-pack isocyanate. A review that mentions an asbestos garage roof is not approval. Skin or breathing reactions, including the dermatitis one vvuvnem reviewer reported, are a reason to leave the mask off and get advice.
