Puma safety shoes: what to check before the price

Updated: 21 October 2026

You have a Monday start and an amazon.co.uk page of Puma safety shoes that mixes low trainers, mid shoes, and high boots between £68.08 and £93.95. The code your workplace wrote down comes before any of those prices, because five of the seven titles in this comparison print no S-code at all. The [Puma safety shoes comparison](/hub/occupational-safety/puma-safety-shoes) holds the seven cards. This page is the order of checks: the written code, the label on the pair you receive, the height and any water line, then the shelf price. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK guidance and did not lab-test the shoes.

Start with the code on the assessment

The Health and Safety Executive's PPE overview says suitable safety footwear is provided when the risk assessment still needs it. That duty sits with the employer. It is not a reason to treat every trainer in a Puma search as a certified pair, and it is not a voucher for the cheapest card in this set. If you are an employee, ask which code the assessment names before you spend your own money. A self-employed buyer is not in that same free-provision position. You still have to match the code the client or the site has written down. A warehouse line that says safety trainers, S1P, is asking for penetration resistance. A site line that says S3 is asking for more than a toe cap. The letter meanings sit on the S3 or S1P safety shoes page.

Who pays

HSE's PPE FAQ points to Regulation 4 of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations and to section 9 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. An employer does not charge you for PPE that is used only at work. The 2022 regulations extend that free provision to limb (b) workers. None of that turns an amazon title into a certificate. If the shoes are required only on site, the employer supplies a suitable pair. A second pair for the weekend is your own purchase. Construction guidance from HSE expects a toecap and, where nails are the risk, a midsole. You cannot swap in a listing that never states the midsole when the paper asked for one. GOV.UK still recognises the CE mark in Great Britain, and UKCA is available as a marking route. No file in this comparison shows a UKCA mark or a certificate number on the amazon details block.

What these seven titles actually print

Read the title, then stop. Only two cards print a class. The PUMA Safety Rio Black Mid at £68.08 prints S3, SRC, an aluminium toe cap, and anti-puncture. The PUMA Safety Rio MID at £75.91 prints S3L and does not say steel, SRC, or waterproof. Those two share model number 23091-37916. The PUMA Safety Conquest CTX High at £82.99 prints EH and WP, not an S-code. EH and WP are not a substitute for S3. The other four titles print no class. Height is the next check, on the safety trainers or safety boots page.

When to stop and ask

Stop when the job is outside ordinary safety footwear. Chainsaw work, foundry and molten metal, chemical splash, and electrically insulating footwear are not what an S3 or S1P line is for. A medical last, or a team rule that every pair must match one certificate, is also a stop. PUMA SAFETY's own S3 description is a catalogue definition. It is not a certificate for an amazon title that never prints the class. Then compare the price, from the Rio at £68.08 up to the Airtwist at £93.95. Fit, including the UK reviews that say several of these lasts run long, is on the Puma safety shoes size page.

Common questions

Does my employer have to pay for Puma safety shoes?
If the risk assessment requires safety footwear and you are an employee, HSE's guidance is that the employer provides suitable PPE and does not charge you for equipment used only at work. That rests on the PPE at Work Regulations and section 9 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, with the 2022 extension to limb (b) workers. It does not cover a self-employed buyer in the same way.
What should I read before the price?
Read the code on the assessment, then the words on that amazon.co.uk title, then the label on the pair when it arrives. After that, match the shaft height and any water line to the ground, and read toe and midsole claims only where the title prints them. A lower price does not hide a class the title left out.
Why do some Puma titles on amazon.co.uk have no S-code?
Five of these seven titles do not print S1, S1P, S3, or S3L. Only the Rio at £68.08 prints S3 and the Rio at £75.91 prints S3L. If your paper needs the letters, a blank title is not a match until the pair's own label shows them.
Is EH or WP the same as S3?
No. On the Conquest CTX High at £82.99 the title prints EH and WP, and UK reviews describe dry feet in rain. If the assessment says S3, this title does not state it.
Does wellington in a Conquest title mean a rubber wellington?
No. Two listings at £88.99 use wellington boots in the title and share model number 27285-46457. HSE treats a safety boot and a rubber wellington as different types of foot protection.
When should I stop and ask the employer?
Stop if the work involves chainsaw cutting, molten metal, chemical splash, or a need for electrically insulating boots. Stop as well if occupational health has specified a medical last, or if the team must all wear one certified model. Those special cases cannot be settled by comparing £68.08 with £93.95.
