Metal-free Albatros safety shoes

Updated: 16 October 2026

Metal-free Albatros safety shoes are a materials claim, not a higher grade, and only two amazon.co.uk titles in this set say so. You want a shoe without a steel toe, often because of a detector, a scanner, or a cold floor, and you need the listing to say so. Prices stay on the [Albatros safety shoes](/hub/occupational-safety/albatros-safety-shoes) comparison. Products Compared did not lab-test a cap. Updated 15 October 2026. Same toe test, different material

Steel and fibreglass safety toes are there to meet the same test. The figures quoted from BS EN ISO 20345 are 200 joules and 15 kilonewtons. A certified fibreglass cap is not weaker because it is non-metal, and steel is not safer because it is metal. Arco’s footwear note treats composite as the metal-free option people choose at detectors. The choice is the material, not a league above S1P or S3. You pick metal-free when you must avoid metal, and you still need the class the assessment named. The Clifton Low title says a fibreglass toe at about £55.14, with S3 SRC, puncture protection, and metal-free. If the rule says non-metallic, steel is out even when the joules match.

The letters on the midsole

The toe material does not stop a nail. Anbu’s class guide reads P as a metallic insert with a 4.5 mm nail, PL as non-metallic with a 4.5 mm nail, and PS as non-metallic with a 3.0 mm nail. PS is a different test, not automatically the best insert for every site. S3 alone does not name the insert. S3L and S3S are newer marks for non-metal puncture routes on an S3 package. A bare S3 title can still hide a metal plate. You know the insert is non-metal only when that shoe says PL, PS, S3L, S3S, or metal-free. FAP is the brand’s name for a flexible midsole on the Clifton catalogue page. The amazon title does not use the word. S1P means a puncture insert is in the class. It does not mean the insert is metal-free.

Only two titles in this set say it

The Clifton Low, at about £55.14 and 4.4 from 130, says fibreglass, puncture protection, metal-free, and S3 SRC. The brand page also says metal-free and fibreglass, and marks the shoe S3L ESD rather than S3 SRC. safetyplus.co.uk lists a Clifton Low as S3 SRC at £52. The tongue settles which description arrived. The other claim is the about £31.25 shoe: S1P, fibreglass, and metal-free, with 2.4 from two ratings and no review text. A metal-free line with no wear comments is a label you can read and a shoe you cannot judge. The other five titles leave the toe blank. Blank means unknown, not secretly composite.

Detectors, and a blow that leaves no dent

Composite caps are what people choose when they want less metal at a detector. That is not a pass at your gate. Sites set their own sensitivity, and a shoe sold as metal-free can still have other metal parts. This page claims a pass for neither listing. If a composite toe still looks smooth after a blow, retire the pair. Composite damage can be invisible. Chemical, foundry, and electrical incidents need a competent person.

Common questions

Is a fibreglass toe weaker than steel?
Not as a rule, when both meet the same toe test of 200 joules and 15 kilonewtons. Fibreglass is a different material, not a lower pass. You choose it to avoid metal, then match the class to the job. A metal-free line is not a higher grade than S3 or S1P.
Which listings in this set say metal-free?
Two. The Clifton Low at about £55.14 says fibreglass, puncture protection, metal-free, and S3 SRC. The about £31.25 shoe says fibreglass and metal-free with S1P, and has two ratings and no review text. The other five titles do not state the toe. Do not fill a blank from a catalogue photo.
What is the difference between P, PL, and PS?
P is a metallic insert tested with a 4.5 mm nail. PL is non-metallic with a 4.5 mm nail. PS is non-metallic with a 3.0 mm nail. PS is a different test, not an automatic upgrade. Look for PL, PS, S3L, S3S, or a metal-free claim on that shoe.
Does S3L mean the shoe is metal-free?
S3L marks a non-metal puncture route on an S3 package. The Clifton brand page says S3L ESD. The amazon title says S3 SRC, plus a separate metal-free claim. Use S3L only when it is on the shoe you are holding.
Will these shoes pass a walk-through detector?
They are the construction people choose to avoid a steel toe. That is not a promise for either listing at your gate. Sensitivity differs, and other parts can still be metal. Try the pair before you depend on it for a shift.
Does the amazon Clifton Low say FAP?
No. FAP is the brand’s name for a flexible, metal-free midsole on the catalogue page. The amazon title says puncture protection and metal-free, and S3 SRC, not FAP and not S3L. Read the insert claim on the tongue.
The composite toe looks fine after a blow. Can I keep it?
No. Retire the pair after an impact. A composite cap can be damaged and still look smooth, unlike a steel dent you can see. Looking intact is not a pass. Involve a competent person if the blow was part of a chemical, foundry, or electrical incident.
