Albatros safety shoes buying guide

Updated: 16 October 2026

You are comparing Albatros titles on amazon.co.uk, and S3, SRC, ESD, and HRO look like one promise. They are separate claims. This Albatros safety shoes buying guide says which letter changes the buy before you use the prices on the [Albatros safety shoes](/hub/occupational-safety/albatros-safety-shoes) comparison. The seven listings in this set run from about £31.25 to about £80.32, and two dearer titles print no class. The Products Compared editorial team checked those pages on 15 October 2026 and did not lab-test the shoes. A purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the title is claiming

Start with the hazard that remains after other controls. HSE’s PPE overview treats footwear as equipment supplied when other measures are not enough. S1P is the dry package plus a puncture-resistant insert. S3 adds a water-resistant upper and a cleated outsole. It is a different bundle, not a higher score, and it is not whole-shoe waterproofing. That further mark is WR, used in classes such as S6 and S7. Three titles in this set print S3 and two print S1P. The Aer55 and the Ultratrail Low print no class. The package choice is on the S1P or S3 safety shoes page.

Slip, static, and heat are separate marks

SRC is the older combined slip mark. SR is the optional 2022 mark. They are not the same test, and neither means you cannot slip. HSE’s slip guidance still says to trial the sole on the floor you walk. In this set, SRC is on the Clifton Low, the Clifton Mid, and the about £31.25 title. It is absent from the Ultratrail mid title. ESD is controlled static discharge. It is not the antistatic A mark and not protection from electric shock. Live electrical work needs a competent person. HRO is brief hot contact on the outsole, not foot insulation and not foundry footwear. Only the about £31.25 row prints HRO. An S3 title does not include that letter.

When the brand page and the amazon title disagree

The Albatros brand page for a Clifton Low marks it S3L ESD. The amazon.co.uk title says S3 SRC, not S3L ESD. safetyplus.co.uk lists a Clifton Low as S3 SRC at £52, close to the amazon price of about £55.14, so S3 SRC is a selling line rather than a typo to upgrade. You buy the code on the offer you open. You do not paste the brand-page string onto it. The Ultratrail Olive CTX Mid title says S3 ESD at about £61.72. A brand collection page uses S7S ESD for a related name. S7 adds whole-shoe water resistance, and this listing does not say S7 or WR. Some Albatros pages mention DGUV, a German scheme, not the UK conformity mark.

The mark on the shoe, and the mark for the market

Read the label before the first shift. You want the assessed class, English instructions, and a UKCA or CE mark, plus a declaration of conformity you can ask for. GOV.UK’s PPE guidance recognises CE for PPE on the Great Britain market from 1 October 2024, alongside UKCA. Northern Ireland follows the EU placing-on-the-market rules. UKCA or CE does not replace the S-code. The standard to name is BS EN ISO 20345:2022+A1:2024. Where footwear is required, the PPE at Work Regulations 1992, regulation 4, put the duty on the employer, including limb (b) workers since 2022. Buying a pair yourself does not replace a written site rule. If the tongue disagrees with the title, send it back.

Common questions

What does S3 include that a bare safety-shoe title might not?
S3 means a protective toe, a puncture-resistant insert, a water-resistant upper, and a cleated outsole. A title that only says safety shoe does not confirm those pieces. Whole-shoe waterproofing is the separate WR mark, and these S3 titles do not print it.
Is SRC the same as the newer SR mark?
No. SRC is the older combined slip mark. SR is the optional mark in the 2022 edition. A Clifton title that says SRC is not claiming SR. Neither mark means the sole cannot slip on your floor. Trial it where you work.
Does ESD protect me from an electric shock?
No. ESD is controlled static discharge. It is not the antistatic mark and not electrical insulation. The Ultratrail mid and the Ultimate Impulse print ESD only as a static mark. That does not make either shoe safe for live electrical work.
Is HRO the same as a foundry boot?
No. HRO is an outsole hot-contact test, not insulation and not foundry footwear. Only the about £31.25 title in this set prints HRO, and that listing has two ratings and no review text. Molten metal needs a specification from someone competent.
Why does the Clifton brand page say S3L ESD when Amazon says S3 SRC?
They are different descriptions of a similar name. The amazon title says S3 SRC at about £55.14. The brand page says S3L ESD. safetyplus.co.uk sells a Clifton Low as S3 SRC at £52. Pay for the code on the offer you opened, then read the tongue.
Which two listings cannot be classed from the title?
The Aer55 Impulse Low at about £80.32 and the Ultratrail Low at about £77.37. Neither title prints S1P or S3, whatever the star line. A large rating count does not create a class. Leave them until the shoe itself shows the mark.
