Oscilloscope mains safety in the UK

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a picture of 230 V, and the ground clip looks like the obvious black lead. Oscilloscope mains safety in the UK starts from a smaller fact: on a typical bench scope that clip is protective earth, so parking it on live or neutral is a short, not a measurement. This page does not rank the three OWON listings and it does not give a socket procedure. Peter F. used HSE guidance, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and the amazon.co.uk files, on 21 October 2026. It is not a lab test. The models are on the [OWON oscilloscope comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/owon-oscilloscope). A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The ground clip is earth

On a Class I bench instrument, HSE publication INDG354 says signal common is tied to the chassis and to the protective conductor. The SDS215S says batteries are not required, and the SDS1022 lists a power lead. UK mains is 230 V at 50 Hz. The clip belongs on a point already at earth, or on the ground of an isolated low-voltage circuit. It does not belong on live or neutral, because it bonds that conductor to protective earth. The files do not confirm a BS 1363 plug, so check the lead in the box.

Do not float the scope

INDG354 says removing the protective conductor so the case floats should be discouraged. Tektronix’s note on floating measurements says the chassis rises towards whatever potential the ground clip is touching, which is a shock risk and a later stress on the insulation. This page does not describe how to lift an earth pin. Leave the protective conductor in place. Northern Ireland still expects CE, and the SDS215S listing does not state a compliance mark.

A battery scope is not a permit

The HDS2102 runs from an 18650 battery and is not a free pass onto 230 V. Its meter bullet states AC 750 V and DC 1000 V. That is a meter range, not a CAT mark, and no CAT rating appears in any of the three files. A voltage without the category does not state the transient the input was rated to survive. The listing does not say the scope channels are isolated from the meter commons.

What a rated differential probe is

A differential probe measures the voltage between its two inputs, so neither input has to be the scope’s earth clip. A UK-sold example is the Testec TT-SX 9002: 30 MHz, up to 1,400 V differential, 1,000 V CAT III, marked to EN 61010-031. Neither that probe nor Pico’s TA041 is in these OWON boxes. A passive 10x probe is not that object, and GS38 does not turn a bundled probe into a fused mains lead. Bandwidth rules stay on the buying guide.

When this is no longer a hobby measurement

At work, regulation 16 of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires technical knowledge or supervision where danger has to be prevented. GS38’s live-working test asks whether it is unreasonable to work dead, reasonable to work live, and whether precautions are in place. A consumer unit or three-phase gear is where a competent person takes over. While you are learning, stay on a battery or a 5 V rail. The first trace is on how to use an OWON oscilloscope. Screen size is on handheld or bench.

Common questions

Can I clip the ground lead to the neutral of a UK socket?
No. On a Class I bench scope the ground clip is protective earth. Clipping it to neutral bonds neutral to earth through the instrument, and clipping it to live is a short to earth. INDG354 describes that common-to-earth connection. Neutral in a healthy UK installation is near earth potential, which is why the clip looks harmless, and it is still the wrong node.
What happens if I remove the earth pin?
HSE guidance is that removing the protective conductor so the case floats should be discouraged. The case can rise towards the potential on the ground clip, which is a shock risk now and a stress on the insulation later. An isolation transformer feeding the scope does not repair that arrangement. This page does not describe how to defeat an earth pin. Leave the protective conductor connected.
Is a battery handheld safe on mains because it is not plugged in?
The HDS2102’s battery does not state an isolation rating. The listing’s AC 750 V and DC 1000 V figures are meter ranges, and the file has no CAT mark. Signal commons can still be tied to the clip. Treat a battery scope with the same refusal to put a ground clip on live or neutral. A differential probe with a stated category is the tool for two points that are both off earth.
Does DC 1000 V on the HDS2102 mean CAT III?
It means the meter bullet prints DC 1000 V and AC 750 V. CAT III is a measurement category for fixed wiring under BS EN 61010, and it is not printed in this amazon.co.uk file. A voltage without a category does not state the transient the input can withstand. CE on the listing is a market mark, not a CAT rating.
What is a differential probe for?
It measures between two inputs so you do not have to earth one of them through the scope’s ground clip. That is the usual way to look at live relative to neutral, or across a component on a mains circuit, when a passive probe would bond one side to protective earth. A UK example is the Testec TT-SX 9002, at 1,000 V CAT III. It is not included with these OWON listings.
Who should do this measurement at work?
Someone with the technical knowledge to prevent danger, or someone under that person’s supervision, which is regulation 16. A consumer unit or three-phase equipment is past a hobby trace. While you are learning, stay on a battery or a 5 V rail, with the ground clip on that circuit’s ground.
