Handheld or bench oscilloscope

Updated: 22 October 2026

Handheld or bench oscilloscope, for these three OWON listings, is a question about where you stand. The HDS2102 is the battery instrument with a meter and a 3.5-inch screen. The SDS215S and the SDS1022 are 7-inch bench instruments that expect a mains lead. Peter F. compared the amazon.co.uk files with OWON’s tables on 21 October 2026. It is not a lab test. Bandwidth rules stay on the [buying guide](/hub/measuring-equipment/owon-oscilloscope/sub/owon-oscilloscope-buying-guide). Which ASIN wins on a coherent specification is on the [best OWON oscilloscope](/hub/measuring-equipment/owon-oscilloscope/sub/owon-oscilloscope-best) page. The prices do not decide it

The HDS2102 is £180.00 and the SDS1022 is £181.00. The SDS215S is £209.93. What changes is the place of work. A repair on a driveway, a loft, or the back of a van needs a scope that runs after you unplug it. If the work leaves the socket, the HDS2102 is the only one of the three built for that.

When the handheld is the one to carry

The HDS2102 listing is battery powered: an 18650 cell, USB-C charging, a stated 4,400 mAh, about 6 hours from a charge, and consumption at or below 3 W. That is the instrument you can put on a temporary board without hunting for a 13 A socket. It is still a two-channel scope plus a 20,000-count true-RMS meter. The listing does not itemise probes or a carry case. About 6 hours is a listing claim, and there is no customer-reviews line.

What you give up on 3.5 inches and 8K

The HDS2102 states a 3.5-inch colour LCD and an 8K record. Eight thousand points at 250 MSa/s is about 32 microseconds. A short glitch fits. A slow serial frame does not. The SDS215S is a 7-inch TFT with 20M in the title, about 20 milliseconds at 1 GS/s. The SDS1022 listing also says a 7-inch LCD. Both files print 500 g and the same dimensions, so those lines are not evidence that one unit is lighter. Take the SDS1022 as 20 MHz and 100 MS/s from OWON and owon.co.uk, not the 100 MHz in the title.

Meter yes, generator no

The handheld’s extra is the meter. The bench extra, on the SDS215S only, is the generator. The HDS2102 listing limits the waveform generator to HDS2xxS models, so you do not get one at £180.00. The SDS215S title includes a 25 MHz generator and no multimeter. The SDS1022 lists neither, and it does list two probes. The HDS2102 bandwidth stays unresolved: the title says 100 MHz, a bullet says up to 70 MHz, and OWON’s column says 100 MHz and 1 GSa/s.

Battery power is not a mains permit

Unplugging the HDS2102 does not make the inputs safe on 230 V. The meter bullet states a maximum of AC 750 V and DC 1000 V. That line is not a CAT rating, and none of the three amazon.co.uk files states one. A ground clip can still be the wrong place to park on live or neutral. The SDS215S is a mains instrument whose batteries are stated as not required. Floating that earth is discouraged, and the detail is on oscilloscope mains safety in the UK.

Common questions

Should I buy the handheld or a bench OWON?
Buy the HDS2102 if the job leaves the mains socket and a 3.5-inch screen is acceptable. Buy the SDS215S if the job stays on a bench and you want 150 MHz and 1 GS/s stated in the bullets and in the SDS200 table, at £209.93. The SDS1022 at £181.00 is the other bench, and only if 20 MHz and 100 MS/s are enough. The prices are too close for price to be the reason.
Is the 3.5-inch screen a real limit?
Yes, when you are tracing a busy waveform or reading a menu for a long session. The HDS2102 states 3.5 inches. The two SDS listings state 7 inches. The handheld’s 8K record at 250 MSa/s stores about 32 microseconds, against about 20 milliseconds for a 20M record at 1 GS/s on the SDS215S title. Short glitches fit on the handheld. Slow events want the bench record.
How long does the HDS2102 battery last, according to the listing?
The bullets say an 18650 lithium battery, a stated 4,400 mAh, USB-C charging, and about 6 hours, with consumption at or below 3 W. They also mention a power bank. There is no UK review in the file that times a working day, so about 6 hours stays a listing claim. The SDS215S listing says batteries are not required.
Does the handheld include a multimeter worth using?
The listing describes a 20,000-count true-RMS meter with AC and DC voltage, AC and DC current, resistance, diode, capacitance, and continuity, plus data hold and relative measurement. The maximum stated on that meter is AC 750 V and DC 1000 V. No CAT rating is printed. There is no review text saying how the meter behaves on a real board, so the specification is what you can rely on, not a field report.
Does the handheld include the generator?
No. The listing says the waveform generator is on HDS2xxS models only, and this model is the HDS2102. The SDS215S title includes a 25 MHz arbitrary waveform generator. One United States review of that bench scope says the generator cable connects to the oscilloscope input only. The SDS1022 lists neither a meter nor a generator.
Can I use the bench scope in a van?
Only if the van has a proper mains supply and the scope stays earthed as a bench instrument. The SDS215S listing says batteries are not required. Carrying it outside does not make it a handheld. For work away from a socket, the HDS2102 is the listing built around an 18650 cell. The amazon.co.uk file does not say those inputs are isolated from the meter commons.
