Golf rangefinder slope switch

Updated: October 2026

A golf rangefinder slope switch is the setting that adds or removes elevation. Distance to the flag is allowed in golf unless your committee says otherwise. An elevation change, or a slope-adjusted yardage, is not. A product title that says tournament legal is not an approval from The R&A. Peter F. followed the R&A guidance and Rule 4.3a on 16 October 2026. It is not a lawyer’s opinion. Our [laser rangefinder comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/laser-rangefinder) is where you see which listings mention a switch. If you are choosing a room meter instead, use the [golf rangefinder or laser distance meter](/hub/measuring-equipment/laser-rangefinder/sub/laser-rangefinder-golf-or-distance-meter) page first. What the rule allows

The R&A allows a distance-measuring device to give you distance and direction. The same guidance says the device must not measure elevation changes. It also must not recommend a club for the stroke you are about to play, based on the ball’s position. Those two limits sit in Rule 4.3a. The slope figure is the part you meet on a button labelled slope. A committee may still ban distance devices altogether. Allowed unless banned is the shape of the rule since the 2019 revisions. You read the local rule and the entry sheet. You do not read the seller’s title and assume the committee agrees. Older club PDFs that still cite Rule 14-3 are out of date.

Slope off is a setting, not a certificate

Turning slope off means the number you see is distance, not distance adjusted for the hill. An external switch is easier to show a marker. A menu toggle can also be off. The R&A page does not require a particular shape of switch. External is not a certificate. Several listings use the words slope switch or tournament legal, including the AOFAR, the ACEGMET, the Focusinc, one Flagfront row, and the GenePro. Those are seller lines, not an R&A test of that ASIN, and this page does not rank them. The best laser rangefinder page says who each golf row is for. A light that shows slope is on, as on the AOFAR, is only a reminder. One UK return in the ACEGMET file showed slope and no distance at all.

A posted score

A score you will post for handicap is meant to be played under the Rules of Golf. England Golf points players at the Rules of Handicapping. Clarification 2.1b/2 says a score made while measuring slope is not recommended as acceptable for handicap purposes. If slope was on, do not assume the card is clean because the title said legal. A practice round you will not post is a different decision. The moment the round counts, the elevation figure stays off from the first tee. You cannot switch it on for one blind hole and still describe the card as played without it. If you are unsure about a card already played, ask the handicap secretary before you submit it.

Your committee can still say no

Model Local Rule G-5 is the committee’s route to prohibit distance-measuring devices. If that local rule is in effect, the rangefinder stays in the bag even with slope switched off. Distance itself is then the thing that is banned, not only the hill. Ask before the competition, not on the first tee. The starter or the conditions of entry is the check. A note that devices have been allowed since 2019 describes the default in the Rules of Golf. Your committee’s local rule sits on top of that default. Northern Ireland clubs are in the same position: the committee on the day still decides. The laser rangefinder buying guide mentions slope only after you have chosen a golf laser.

What to do with the switch

Before a competition, or before any round you will post, turn the elevation or slope adjustment off and confirm the yardage is plain distance. If the device has a visible switch, set it where a marker can see it. If it is a menu, open the menu and check the mode. Leave the slope number for a practice round you will not return. The main comparison shows which listings mention a switch. That table is not a rules test. If the committee has banned distance devices, the device does not come out. If you cannot tell slope from distance on the screen, do not use the unit for that counted round.

Common questions

Can I use a rangefinder in a club competition?
You can use it for distance and direction unless the committee has banned distance-measuring devices. You cannot use it to measure elevation or to recommend a club from the ball. Check the local rule for that competition. A title that says tournament legal is not permission from the club, and it is not an R&A approval of the model.
What must be switched off?
The slope or elevation adjustment, so the figure is distance only. A club recommendation that uses the ball’s position is also outside Rule 4.3a. An external switch or a menu item can both be the control. The rule cares that the elevation number is not in use. It does not prescribe the shape of the button.
Does an external switch make the device approved?
No. An external switch is easier to show a marker. The R&A does not certify a listing because the switch is on the outside, and a menu that is genuinely off is not banned by the current guidance. Tournament legal on an amazon.co.uk title is the seller’s wording. Treat it as a claim, then check the setting yourself.
Can I post a score if slope was on?
A handicap score is played by the Rules of Golf. Clarification 2.1b/2 is reported as saying that a score made while measuring slope is not recommended as acceptable for handicap. Do not post it as a normal card without asking the handicap secretary. A practice round you never intended to submit is a separate choice from a card you return.
What if my committee bans distance devices?
Then the rangefinder stays away, including with slope already off. Model Local Rule G-5 is how a committee prohibits these devices. The ban is on distance measuring, not only on the hill. Ask from the conditions of the competition. A 2019 magazine summary of the Rules of Golf does not overrule that local rule.
