Hay moisture meter: what to check before you pay

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to stack small squares for a horse, and a search for a hay moisture meter on amazon.co.uk runs from about £24 to £76.50. The figure on the screen only helps if the meter is reading hay, the pin reaches the bale you actually make, and you know what a high reading is allowed to mean. The [hay moisture meter comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/hay-moisture-meter) is the product table. This page is the checklist before you pay: scale, probe length, the wet end, and batteries. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf figures from 20 October 2026. These meters were not lab-tested. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A hay scale, not a grain code

A hay moisture meter needs a hay or straw scale. Delmhorst puts grain in a cup or a dump cell, and baled hay on a prod. A cereal preset is not a hay calibration, even when the amazon.co.uk title also says hay and straw. The Yosoo at about £24.18 puts hay and straw in the title and then lists 14 crops. The YUKERMARB at about £31.09 is titled as a grain moisture meter, with forage and alfalfa only in the lead bullet. The Kalageen TK100H at about £76.50 is the title that stays with hay, forage, and alfalfa. Voice, a backlight, and auto-off do not create a hay scale.

Probe length for the bale

The reading is the hay at the tip, not an average of the bale. Delmhorst asks for a prod that reaches at least half to two-thirds of the thickness, and puts a useful length at about 10 to 18 inches. UK farm-trade probes are commonly 48 to 50 cm. The Wile 27 datasheet specifies 48 cm. The three listings here do not state a needle length. Parcel sizes of about 43 to 49 cm are the box, not the steel.

The wet end, density, and batteries

The Haymatic Digital manual says readings over 30% are qualitative. Delmhorst calls hay above about 30% very wet. The TK100H listing claims 0–80% and ±0.5%n. That is a seller’s bullet, not the Wile 27 repeatability of 2 points. There is no British Standard that turns the bullet into a tolerance. These three listings do not state a density scale. One poke on the dry face can hide a wet core. The method is on the how to use a hay moisture meter page. The Yosoo asks for four AA batteries and switches off after 15 minutes. The YUKERMARB switches off after 5 minutes. Review notes on the TK100H mention a low-battery icon that stayed on. Those texts are from the United States and Canada.

What you are paying for on this shelf

On 20 October 2026 the kept prices were about £24.18, about £31.09, and about £76.50. Carpenter Goodwin lists a Wile 27 at £295.04 including VAT. Agri-Linc lists a Wile 500 from £329.50 excluding VAT, shown beside £395.40. Those meters publish a hay or straw scale and a probe around 48 to 50 cm. They are not the ASINs here. The best hay moisture meter page sets that choice by the job.

Common questions

Does a hay moisture meter need a hay scale, or is a grain code enough?
It needs a hay or straw scale. A grain code is a preset for a cup or a cell, not a prod in a bale. A title can say hay while the bullets list wheat, maize, and rapeseed. That list is not a hay calibration. It may still flag a very wet small square if you probe more than once, though it is a weak basis for a large bale in a tight band.
How long should the probe be for a small square and for a large round bale?
A small square needs a pin that passes the dry face. Delmhorst asks for at least half to two-thirds of the thickness, around 10 to 18 inches. Large rounds need a 48 to 50 cm trade probe. A 25 cm option is the short choice. These listings under £80 do not state needle length, so trust the photo more than the carton.
Is the length on the Amazon parcel the needle?
No. About 43 to 49 cm in the saved listings is the box, not the steel. A short double rod can ship in a long carton. Until the listing states a needle length, or the photos show a prod near 48 to 50 cm, you do not know whether it will reach the core of your bale.
What does a reading above about 30% actually mean?
On the Haymatic, readings over 30% are qualitative. Delmhorst calls that region very wet, not a precise percent. Use it as a stop-and-check signal. It is not an oven result, and a decimal on the display does not make it accurate to 0.1%. HI or LO, on meters that use them, means you are outside the useful numbered range.
Is ±0.5% on a listing the same as a published hay-meter error?
The ±0.5%n line on the TK100H page is the seller’s claim next to a stated 0–80% range. It is not an oven test, and no British Standard here converts it into a hay tolerance. The Wile 27, a different meter, publishes a repeatability of 2 points. Treat a tight percent on a cheap listing as advertising until a manual states the error for hay.
When is a wet-or-dry flag enough, and when is a named hay scale the different buy?
A wet-or-dry flag is enough for a few small squares if you will probe more than once and you only need to catch an obviously wet bale. A named hay scale and a long probe are the different buy when the bales are large or the safe band is tight. That instrument costs a few hundred pounds on the farm-trade sites named above. It is not one of these three listings.
