Green cross line laser for tiling

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are about to stick the first course in a bathroom or a kitchen. A green cross line laser for tiling gives you that first horizontal course and the first vertical joint on the wall you can see. It does not space the tiles, prove the floor is flat, or wrap four walls from one spot. The [green cross line laser comparison](/hub/measuring-equipment/green-cross-line-laser) keeps every listing. Peter F. wrote this on 21 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk listings and public UK tiling notes, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The first course and the first joint

Set a horizontal line at the first full tile, usually above a cut at the floor or above a bath rim. Dry-lay the tiles and spacers first so the end cuts are not slivers. A 600 mm tile on a 2.4 m wall can leave a thin strip if you start from a corner without measuring. The laser does not do that arithmetic. The vertical line marks the first column, not every joint. Start from the centre of a feature, or from a chosen edge, then check the narrow cuts. Pencil dots so you can move the laser, and still check the run with a straight edge. Spacers or a timber batten still set the joint and can carry heavy tiles. Weber's UK bathroom guide still uses a spirit level and a batten. A flashing line is not this datum. If the beam blinks, shift the base until it is steady, using how to use a self-levelling cross line laser, and only then pencil the course.

One cross is one wall

A cross hits the wall in front of the tool. It does not wrap a bathroom. A 360° plane is a different category. To carry the height onto a return, mark pencil dots, lock the pendulum, move the tool, unlock, and match the dots. One cross in a 2 m by 2 m room will not land a level line on all four walls. If the dots disagree, trust the ones you checked with a tape. One splashback is a cross. A whole-room datum is not a question this table answers.

Floors, flatness and wet rooms

On a floor, the line can square a starting row. It cannot see a dip. Use a straight edge and the tile maker's limit. Large tiles lip on a hollow a line in the air never shows. Flatten the floor before adhesive, then bring the laser back for the first joint. Weber's order for a bathroom wall is to tank the substrate first. IP54 is dust and splashes, not a waterproof shower. Leave the laser out until the tanking has cured. A patio fall needs a receiver, and no receiver is in these boxes.

Light and the stand

Green is easier to see than red in a lit room. A bright bathroom can still wash the line out. That is visibility, not a tighter millimetre rate. No detector is in these boxes. DeWalt names the DE0892G and does not include it. Enventor says outdoor use is not recommended. If you cannot see the centre of the line, do not guess the edge of a faint glow. Short stands fail at full height. Reviews call stands flimsy from about 30 cm to about 1 m. Enventor's magnetic bracket helps on steel and does nothing on plasterboard. If the wall is badly out of plumb, a tiler should take the substrate. Named picks are on the best green cross line laser page.

Common questions

Where do I put the horizontal line for wall tiles?
Put it at the first full course, usually above a cut at the floor or above the bath. Dry-lay the tiles first so the end cuts are not thin strips. Pencil dots before you mix adhesive. A batten can support heavy tiles. The laser does not hold the weight.
What is the vertical line for?
It marks the first column, so the joints above it stay on one line. It does not set every spacer after that. Choose the start from the centre of a feature or from an edge you have measured, and check the offcuts before adhesive.
Can one cross wrap a whole bathroom?
No. A cross hits the wall in front of it. Wrapping a room is what a 360° plane is sold for. To take the height around a corner, mark pencil dots, lock the pendulum, move the tool, and match the new line to the dots.
Do I still need spacers?
Yes. Spacers or a batten set the joint and can support the tile while the adhesive cures. The laser only shows where the first course and the first column should sit. Weber's UK bathroom guide still uses a batten and a spirit level.
Can I tile from a flashing line?
No. A flashing line means the base is outside the self-levelling window, so it is not a level course. A locked manual line is a slope, not a datum. Shift the stand until the beam is steady and unlocked, then mark. Marking the first course from a blink tilts every row above it.
Is a laser enough to know the floor is flat?
No. The line can square a starting row. It cannot see a hollow or a hump in the subfloor. Use a straight edge and the tile maker's stated limit. Large tiles will lip on a dip the laser never shows. Flatten first, then bring the laser back to set the joint.
Will a green line show in a bright bathroom?
Often, and not always. Green is easier indoors than red, and strong daylight can still hide the line. No detector is included. DeWalt names the DE0892G and leaves it out of the box. If you cannot see the centre of the beam, do not guess it.
