Sack truck buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk because a move, a compost run, or a stockroom has outgrown carrying. One title says heavy duty on a trolley stated at 35 kg. Another prints 600 lb and a different kilogram in the specification. This sack truck buying guide puts the checks in order: stated capacity for the mode you will use, then wheels, toe plate, fold and empty weight, then price. Peter F. mapped the twelve listings in the [sack truck comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/sack-truck). It is not a lab test. Updated 21 October 2026. Start with the load, not the title

A printed kilogram is the seller's ceiling for that mode, not a promise you can push that weight up a step. INDG478 says anything above the manufacturer's rated capacity is unacceptable. For a small one- or two-wheel truck the low band is under 50 kg total, goods plus the empty frame. Read the figure for the way you will use the truck. MoverX's MX-FT150 states 75 kg as a sack truck and 150 kg as a platform, and the specification shows the higher number. REDCAMP states 260 lb on two wheels and 330 lb on four. If you only push upright, the platform figure is the wrong ceiling. Six hundred pounds is about 272 kg. Do not average that with a specification that says 295 kg.

Wheels and the toe plate

Wheels follow the ground. They do not set the kilogram. Solid rubber does not puncture and suits a hard floor. Pneumatic tyres cushion a kerb and go flat, so you keep both at a similar pressure. Puncture-proof in trade catalogues often means foam-filled polyurethane. If the ground is the real question, use pneumatic or solid tyres. The toe plate is the shelf you slide under the load. A fixed plate is often smaller. A folding plate is often larger. In this set the Modern Group trucks state 345 × 220 mm. A short plate lets a tall appliance tip. A bent plate means the truck has already been overloaded. Retire it.

Fold, weight, and the price in this set

Fold comes after the load is covered. A boot needs a printed folded size. MoverX's MX-T90 prints 35 × 19 × 71 cm, weighs 5 kg, and is listed at £28.99. CCHONGCC prints 44 × 23 × 8 cm, states 35 kg, and is £22.99. The Einhell BT-HT 90 is listed at 5 kg and 41 × 38 × 107 cm, which reads as an open size rather than a folded cube. Fixed steel trucks here weigh about 8–10 kg and do not fold. Steel fits a shed. Aluminium fits a boot. Stored prices sit in two bands: folders at £22.99–£28.99, and steel or convertible trucks at £46.83–£69.98. A higher price does not repair a split capacity. REDCAMP is £69.98 and still asks you to use 260 lb upright, not 330 lb.

When the page should stop

Stairs are not a reason to buy a higher kilogram on an ordinary two-wheel truck. Going slowly does not add a stair rating. None of these twelve uses a three-wheel star. If the route includes a flight, go to sack truck on stairs. A repeated workplace route is the other exit. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 still say avoid, assess, and reduce. INDG478 scores a slope over 5°, gravel, and steps poorly. L23 says a sack truck can reduce carrying and does not remove the push. These listings do not claim BS EN 1757.

Common questions

How much weight should I look for?
Look for a stated capacity that covers the heaviest item in the mode you will use. Under 50 kg total, truck plus load, is the low band in INDG478 for this kind of truck. Anything above the printed rating is a stop. A 90 kg folder and a title that says 600 lb are different jobs, and the higher number counts only if it is the figure for your mode.
Is a folding truck weaker than a fixed one?
Folders here are usually lighter and stated around 35–90 kg. Fixed steel trucks are about 8–10 kg empty and carry a higher printed line. Folding is not automatically weaker. The limit is the figure for the mode, plus whether the empty frame has to live in a boot. A 35 kg folder is the wrong tool for a fridge even when the title says heavy duty.
What is a toe plate?
It is the shelf at the bottom of the frame. You slide it under the load, then tilt until the weight sits over the axle. A fixed plate is often smaller and typically rated higher. A folding plate is often larger. If the listing prints no size, do not assume a tall appliance will sit safely. A bent plate is a damaged truck, not a plate you hammer flat.
Why do some pages show 600 lb and a different kilogram?
Six hundred pounds is about 272 kg. If the same page also says 295 kg, or a bullet says 270 kg beside a specification of 272.16 kg, those lines are not one capacity. Do not average them. Satisfactory quality under the Consumer Rights Act is judged against the description you were given, so read the specification before you treat the title as the rating.
Does a higher star count mean a stronger truck?
Stars and Best Sellers Rank describe how the listing sells. They do not measure welds, flex, or whether a 90 kg line is realistic on your route. A truck with thousands of ratings can still jam a handle or omit a stair figure. Read the stated capacity and the repeated complaints beside the stars.
