Platform truck vs sack truck

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are looking at a fridge, a stack of boxes, and a kerb, and one amazon.co.uk title offers to be both a flat deck and a sack barrow. Platform truck vs sack truck is a choice of shape. A four-wheel deck keeps a spread load upright on the level. A two-wheel sack truck tilts a tall load onto a toe plate. A convertible prints two limits, and four-wheel mode is not always the higher one. The rows are on the [platform truck comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/platform-truck).

What each truck is for

A platform truck is a pedestrian flatbed on four wheels. You push it. Boxes stay upright, which is why the deck is the better tool when the load is wide and the floor is level. A sack truck is two wheels and a toe plate. You tilt a tall load onto that plate and balance it over the axle. REDCAMP changes mode when you move a U-pipe and prints two limits. Pyle claims a sack-truck shape at one 90 kg figure. MoverX has no toe plate, so it is not a sack barrow. If you want a deck for boxes, the best platform truck page attaches a listing to that job.

Two capacities, not one

Read the number for the mode you will use, and do not add the two figures. REDCAMP’s bullet gives 260 lb on two wheels and 330 lb on four, about 118 kg and 150 kg. The four-wheel line is the platform limit. The two-wheel line is the sack-truck limit. Trade catalogues show why platform mode does not always hold more. A Manutan combination prints 250 kg as a sack truck and 100 kg as a trolley. None of those trade models is an ASIN here. Do not copy a higher trade figure onto REDCAMP.

Stairs, kerbs, and a low dolly

A normal flatbed is not a stair climber. Do not carry a loaded deck up or down steps. REDCAMP’s listing asks whether it can be used on stairs and does not answer. A review that used a ramp is a ramp, not a flight of stairs. A kerb is a smaller version of the same problem: a two-wheel barrow can drop the toe plate over one step, and a four-wheel deck has to roll the leading wheels up. If you would have to lift the whole deck, stop. MoverX does not become a sack truck.

Which shape to choose

Use the deck when the load is spread out and the route is level. Use a two-wheel sack truck when the load is tall and you must tilt it. If one product claims both, read both numbers. For the push once you have chosen a deck, use the how to use a platform truck page.

Common questions

When is a flat deck the better tool?
Use a four-wheel platform truck when the load sits flat and the route stays level: boxes, a crate, or sheet that should not be tilted. The weight stays low and spread across four wheels, so you push rather than balance. It is the wrong shape for stairs and a poor shape for a tall fridge you need to tip onto a toe plate.
When is a two-wheel sack barrow the better tool?
Use a sack truck when the load is tall and you can tilt it onto a toe plate: a sack, a fridge, or a narrow stack over a kerb. You balance it over the axle, which a flat deck does not do. A dedicated barrow is the clearer buy if you never need a deck. On REDCAMP the upright limit is the 260 lb line, not the 330 lb platform line.
Can one truck be both?
Yes, if it is a convertible and you accept two limits. REDCAMP changes mode with a U-pipe and prints 260 lb on two wheels and 330 lb on four. Pyle claims a sack-truck shape among eight modes at one 90 kg figure, so there is no second Pyle limit. A truck with no toe plate, including the MoverX dolly, is not both. REDCAMP’s conversion is useful only if the pins and threads go together.
Which number do you use on a convertible?
Use the number for the mode you are in. On REDCAMP that is about 118 kg upright and about 150 kg on four wheels, from 260 lb and 330 lb. Do not add them, and do not borrow the higher figure while the truck is a barrow. A Manutan combination, not in our ASIN set, prints 250 kg as a sack truck and 100 kg as a trolley. That is why “the platform always holds more” is unsafe.
Can you take a platform truck upstairs?
Not as a flatbed. Do not carry a loaded deck up or down stairs. REDCAMP asks the stair question and does not answer it. A house-move review that used a ramp is not stair climbing. A star-wheel stair climber is a different product, and GGR’s 350 kg model lists 150 kg as a stair-climbing aid. Do not paste that figure onto a platform truck.
Does four-wheel mode always allow more weight?
No. REDCAMP’s four-wheel line is higher than its two-wheel line, and an AluTruk trade listing prints 500 kg on the flatbed against 300 kg upright. A Manutan combination prints the opposite: 100 kg as a trolley and 250 kg as a sack truck. Slingsby’s 3-in-1 is close, at 400 kg as a platform and 350 kg as a hand truck. Only REDCAMP’s pair is in this folder. Read the mode on the listing you are buying.
