How to use a platform truck

Updated: 22 October 2026

The deck is in the hall, the boxes are stacked higher than the handle, and the drive falls towards the road. How to use a platform truck is the sequence that keeps the load on the deck: check the hardware, set the wheels the way that truck’s leaflet says, load low, push on the level, and stop when the route becomes a slope you cannot hold or a flight of stairs. The nine amazon.co.uk listings are in the [platform truck comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/platform-truck). This is not a lab test. Which model to buy stays on the [platform truck buying guide](/hub/lifting-equipment/platform-truck/sub/platform-truck-buying-guide).

Check the deck before you load it

Look at the truck you received before you put weight on it. A missing wheel, a bolt left out of the bag, and a weld that is already cracked are stop points. On DEIAALOVE, one UK delivery contained two wheels and was returned. On Pyle, UK reviews describe a front-wheel cross bar that failed in under two weeks. If the frame is bent and this is work equipment, take it out of use. A brake is either named or it is not. DEIAALOVE names front brake castors. Pyle names brakes in the R-Trac bullet, while the specification calls those wheels pneumatic. Stanley, EZ BUYS, both N&S models, GOEHNER, MoverX, and REDCAMP do not name a brake. At work, PUWER 1998 applies when the truck is work equipment. LOLER is not the principal duty of a flatbed that does not lift.

Fixed and swivel ends

Do not assume every platform truck steers the same way. A UK review of the Stanley says the leaflet puts the fixed wheels by the handle and the swivels at the front, and that buyer found pulling easier after fitting them that way. Handle-iT, a UK maker, prefers two fixed wheels at the front and two swivels at the handle. Revvo says you push with the fixed casters leading. Those sources disagree. Follow the leaflet in the box you have. MoverX does not fit a tiller layout: the reviews describe no steering handle and a straight track. If the route needs turns inside a house, that dolly is the wrong shape.

Load low, then push

Put the heavier items on the deck first. An open bed lets boxes slide. EZ BUYS reviews say items slide off, even with two bungee cords in the box. Stanley’s bumper strips do not replace a strap around a tall filing cabinet. Push on the level, with both hands, and keep the stack low enough that you can see over it. HSE’s pushing and pulling pages put the hands between hip and shoulder. Guideline forces are not weight limits, so this page does not give you a kilogram you may push. Do not stand or sit on the deck.

Slopes, kerbs, and stairs

A missing brake plus a slope you cannot hold is a stop. EZ BUYS reviews say the truck rolls away if you let go of the handle. If the drive falls towards the road and nothing locks a wheel, unload or change the route. Stairs are the wrong tool. The Compass card says trolleys must not be carried up or down steps. REDCAMP’s listing asks about stairs and does not answer. That choice sits on the platform truck vs sack truck page.

Common questions

Do you push or pull a platform truck?
Push it on the level, so you can see the route and keep both hands on the handle. HSE’s roll-cage guidance says push rather than pull. One Stanley reviewer found pulling easier after fitting the fixed wheels by the handle, as that leaflet described. Treat that as a note about that truck, not as a reason to pull every flatbed.
Do swivel wheels go at the handle or at the front?
Follow the leaflet in your box. A Stanley UK review says that leaflet puts the fixed wheels by the handle and the swivels at the front. Handle-iT prefers fixed wheels leading and swivels at the handle, and Revvo says you push with the fixed casters leading. The sources disagree, so this page does not collapse them into one fitting rule.
What do you do if the listing never names a brake?
Confirm the absence on the truck, then keep it off any slope you cannot hold. Stanley, EZ BUYS, both N&S models, GOEHNER, MoverX, and REDCAMP do not name a brake. EZ BUYS reviews say the deck rolls away if you let go. DEIAALOVE names front brake castors. Pyle names brakes in one bullet while the specification says pneumatic.
How high can you stack before you cannot see?
Stop when you cannot see over the load. HSE treats the sight line, and hands held between hip and shoulder, as part of the push. Its guideline forces are not a weight limit you can convert into a stack height. Heavier pieces go on the deck first. An open bed still needs a strap.
Can you take it up stairs?
No. Do not carry a loaded platform truck up or down steps. The Compass catering card states that for trolleys, and a flat deck here is not a stair climber. REDCAMP’s page asks about stairs and does not answer. A ramp in one house-move review is not a flight of stairs.
When do you stop and get a second person?
Stop for a slope you cannot hold, a kerb, a narrow door, a tail lift, or a loading dock, and when the load blocks your view or overhangs the wheels. The Compass card calls for two people at slopes, kerbs, and narrow doors. A second person does not turn a flatbed into a stair truck.
