Platform truck buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are standing with stacked boxes, and the amazon.co.uk titles answer with 400 kg and 540 kg before they name a wheel or a brake. This platform truck buying guide is the order of checks that stops the largest number winning. The [platform truck comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/platform-truck) runs from a Stanley open flatbed at £37.90 to an N&S folding trolley at £142.99, and none of the nine listings shows a BS EN 1757:2022 mark you can treat as a test. Check the shape of the job, the load for the mode you will use, then wheels, brake, and fold.

What you are buying

A platform truck, often listed as a platform trolley, is a pedestrian flatbed on four wheels. You push it. The deck stays low, so boxes sit on the base instead of hanging from a two-wheel sack barrow. This folder includes an open steel bed, a folding handle, a fenced platform, a two-tier cart, a convertible, and a low dolly with no tiller. A sack barrow that never becomes a deck belongs on the platform truck vs sack truck page, because stairs and a toe plate are a different decision. Boxes want the deck. A tall fridge you must tilt wants a barrow, and that mode has its own limit. Entry is the Stanley at £37.90. A higher price is not a higher verified load.

Read the load for the mode you will use

Sort by the kilogram that matches the deck you will load. GOEHNER prints 317 kg as a total, then splits it: 45 kg on the top shelf and 272 kg on the base. REDCAMP prints two limits on purpose: 260 lb as a two-wheel hand truck and 330 lb as a four-wheel platform, about 118 kg and 150 kg if you convert. You move a U-pipe to change mode. The second number is not a bonus on top of the first. BS EN 1757:2022 covers pedestrian platform trucks up to 500 kg on smooth, level, hard floors. None of these nine listings shows that mark. MoverX prints 540 kg, above that ceiling. That is a scope note, not a pass or a fail.

Wheels, brake, and fold

Wheels decide the floor more than the kilogram does. TPR or polyurethane suits indoor resin. Solid rubber suits a place where a puncture would stop the day. A larger pneumatic tyre is what reviewers reach for on a path. HSE’s roll-cage note gives a worked example: a 100 mm wheel needs roughly 20 percent more force than a 125 mm wheel on a small step. That is not a test of these ASINs. It is why the Stanley’s 100 mm TPR wheels are a poor match for a kerb. A brake is either named or it is not. DEIAALOVE names front brake castors. Pyle names brakes in the R-Trac bullet, while the specification calls the wheels pneumatic. Stanley, EZ BUYS, both N&S models, GOEHNER, MoverX, and REDCAMP do not name a brake. How you push is the how to use a platform truck page.

What this shortlist actually prints

The clashes are the reason a single sort column misleads. The 200 kg N&S specification prints 2E+2 kg, which is not a load you can plan around. DEIAALOVE’s bullet says a twin steel plate and the specification says aluminium. Stanley repeats 150 kg in the title, the bullet, and the specification, at £37.90. Which job should send you to which listing is the best platform truck page.

Common questions

What should you check before the kilogram?
Check the shape first. An open bed, a folding handle, a convertible, a shelf, or a low dolly with no handle are different tools, and the kilogram only means something after you know which one you will use. Then read wheels, whether a brake is named, and whether a fold is in the bullets.
Is 400 kg on a £69.99 listing the same kind of figure as 150 kg on a Stanley?
They are both title claims, and they are not the same kind of evidence. The Stanley repeats 150 kg in the bullet and the specification, in front of 1,357 ratings. The EZ BUYS repeats 400 kg and 880 lb, in front of 58 ratings, and a UK review reports a handle snap at about 30 kg.
Do you need a brake if the route is flat?
On a short, level floor you may not use a brake, and several listings honestly leave it unnamed. You need one named, and then found on the truck, when the route dips, when you must let go to open a door, or when you load on a slope. DEIAALOVE names front brake castors. Pyle names brakes in a bullet that conflicts with the wheel specification.
Why do two N&S star lines not count twice?
Both pages show 4.6 from 186, and the saved review text is the same, including a reviewer who says they bought the smaller of the two models. That is one sample pasted onto the 200 kg ASIN and the 350 kg ASIN. You cannot add the counts and call it 372 independent opinions.
When should the top shelf limit stop you using the headline total?
When the bullet gives the shelf its own number. GOEHNER’s 317 kg total includes 45 kg on the top shelf and 272 kg on the bottom. A 45 kg cap is the figure for anything you put on the shelf. The page has no reviews, so the split is what you can check today, and the 317 kg total is still an unreviewed claim.
