How to use an electric pallet truck

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a pallet to move and a pedestrian truck with a tiller, and the useful question is what you check before it rolls. This is how to use an electric pallet truck on a smooth floor: confirm the truck is safe to start, lift the load only just clear of the ground, walk facing the direction you are going, and park with the forks down. It is not a repair guide. The listing set is the [electric pallet truck comparison](/hub/lifting-equipment/electric-pallet-truck). Peter F. used HSE pages and operator checklists, not a test of the six ASINs. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Check the truck before it moves

At work you use the truck only if you are trained and authorised. The Health and Safety Executive says there is no government licence for workplace transport. PUWER regulation 9 still requires training. That is not permission to skip the check because the machine looks simple. Unplug the charger before you move. If the pack is lithium, look at the case, the leads and the state of charge. UKMHA guidance says a damaged pack comes out of service and you do not bypass the battery management system. If the truck is lead-acid, do not open the cells on a hunch. The chemistry split is on the lithium or lead-acid pallet truck page. Then try the horn and raise the forks empty a few centimetres. Where the truck has an emergency reverse, the belly button on the tiller head, test it from the side, as the manual says. Only B0H6SC3366 and B0HCZK4FJW name that switch. If it does not work, or the horn is dead, or the brake does not hold with the tiller up and fully down, you do not start.

Enter the pallet and lift only clear of the floor

Square the truck to the pallet so the forks are centred, not rubbing one block and missing the other. If they will not enter, stop and read the electric pallet truck buying guide rather than forcing them. Lift only until the pallet is just clear of the floor. You are not stacking. HSE's LOLER overview says a simple pallet truck that only raises the load just clear of the ground may sit outside LOLER, and PUWER maintenance still applies. If the truck lifts higher, do not assume the exception. A pallet that tips as soon as it leaves the floor is unstable. Keep your feet outside the fork and wheel line. Just clear means a few centimetres, enough that the boards do not drag.

Walk facing the direction of travel

Face the way the truck is going. If the load is behind you, look along the route. Do not walk backwards into a doorway you cannot see. Keep your feet clear of the tiller head. The emergency reverse exists because people get pinned against a wall. It is not a reason to stand in that gap. Travel so you can stop inside the space you can see, and sound the horn at a blind corner. Do not ride on the forks. Do not travel across a side slope. These six listings do not state a gradient, so use the plate on the truck in your hand. If the load shifts, stop, lower and restack. Park out of the walkway, lower the forks fully, and charge only in the place set aside for it.

Stop and get a competent person

A truck that will not move is not a wiring job for the end of the shift. Confirm the battery is connected, the charger is unplugged, the isolator is on and the emergency stop is released. If it still will not drive or lift, call a competent person. Do not bridge a switch. Stop if the battery case is swollen, cracked or hotter than the maker allows, or if you smell burning. Stop if the route includes a gradient, a cold store or a public road the manual does not allow. A HELI sheet and an HSS hire sheet do not agree on one percentage, and neither figure is on these files. The plate on your truck wins.

When you do not start the job

If the horn, the brake or the emergency reverse fails the check, you do not move the pallet. If the forks will not enter, you do not force them. If the truck will not drive after the operator checks, a competent person takes the fault. The next move is no longer yours.

Common questions

Do I walk backwards?
You face the direction of travel. When the load is behind you, you look along the route you are about to walk. You do not reverse blindly into a doorway. Keep your feet clear of the tiller so you are not the person the belly button is there to protect.
How high do I lift?
Just clear of the floor, enough that the pallet does not drag. These trucks in the comparison are low-lift machines, not stackers. A higher lift can change whether LOLER applies. If the pallet tips as soon as it leaves the ground, lower it and restack.
What is the red button on the tiller?
On many pedestrian trucks it is the emergency reverse, there to move the truck away if you are pressed against it. Test it the way the manual says, from the side. Only two listings in this set name that control. If yours does not work, do not use the truck.
Can I use it on a slope?
Only within the gradient on that truck's plate, and not across a side slope. HSE does not publish a single never-on-a-ramp rule for pallet trucks. These six listings do not state a percentage. If the manual is silent, do not guess a slope from another brand's sheet.
Do I need a forklift licence?
Not a government licence card. The Health and Safety Executive says workplace transport has no such licence. At work your employer must still train and authorise you under PUWER. A pedestrian pallet truck is not a reason to skip that.
The truck will not move. What next?
Confirm the charger is unplugged, the battery is connected, the isolator is on and the emergency stop is out. If it still will not drive or lift, stop. A competent person takes the fault. Do not bypass a switch or open a damaged battery.
