Telescopic hedge trimmer for tall hedges

Updated: October 2026

A telescopic hedge trimmer for tall hedges is useful only if it brings the whole cut within reach from firm ground. A printed 2.6 m may be the tool, while a larger figure may add your body and arm. Neither equals the height and width you can finish with a controlled grip. Measure the top, decide where you will stand, and reject any model that still needs leaning or climbing. Stated reach for twelve listings is in our [telescopic hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/telescopic-hedge-trimmer).

Measure the hedge, then read the reach

Measure from where you will stand to the top, on both sides. A slope or wall changes the footing. Then check whether the far edge puts the blade overhead. Bosch UK gives the UniversalHedgePole 18 a range of 210–260 cm, ladder-free reach up to 2.6 m. POSENPRO states a 2.11–2.67 m pole and also about 4.5 m with the user added. Safe reach is both feet planted and both hands on the grips. The longest shaft can make an ordinary hedge harder. Weight and tooth gap come next, in the buying guide.

Hedges around 2 m to 2.6 m

For a hedge around 2 m, a stated 2.4 m tool can be realistic if you stand close on level ground. The MZK states 2.4 m and a 57 cm blade. A deep top, border plants or a lower stance can use up that spare. Test it. Do not treat 40 cm as a guarantee. Bosch UK documents the UniversalHedgePole 18 at up to 2.6 m. The captured Amazon page left reach blank. Reviews mention tall privet and light conifer from the ground, and a head-heavy feel. A reachable top still has to stay controllable. Hyundai states a 2.6 m pole and claims up to 3.6 m. One UK reviewer says waist height does not produce 3.6 m. Use the defined pole length. If the job needs the last part of a user-inclusive claim, choose a clearer figure.

Hedges around 3 m and above

Near 3 m, pages switch between tool length and cutting height. Flymo says the EasiCut Reach 480 can cut at up to 3 m fully extended. It is corded, listed at 6.18 kg, with a 10 m cable. Ryobi states 2.9 m with the extension shaft, and marketing refers to hedges over 4 m. The 4 m figure depends on you. The tool lists 5.6 kg and is sold without a battery. It can suit a measured tall hedge for an existing ONE+ owner. It does not replace a ground-level fit check. Worx claims up to 2.8 m, while two UK reviewers measured about 2.6 m. Plan around the lower figure. Do not add an unofficial extension. BS EN 62841-4-2 covers extended-reach hedge trimmers up to 3.5 m maximum length. That limit is not permission to lengthen a domestic tool.

When the pole is the wrong tool

An overhead line within possible reach of the extended shaft is a stop. Look up before you assemble the tool. Do not estimate clearance, and do not rely on a non-metallic pole. Slope, soft soil and a narrow border can make a nominally reachable hedge unsuitable. The HSE approach favours finishing from the ground, and the ground has to hold a stable stance. A pole trimmer on a ladder is not acceptable because only a few centimetres are missing. A 14–18 mm cordless capacity is for annual growth, not the wood inside an old Leyland hedge. The best telescopic hedge trimmer picks name choices for maintained growth. The sequence, once the height fits, is in the how-to guide.

Use the lower figure you can defend

If you can stand close to a hedge around 2 m, test a stated 2.4 m tool before you pay for more shaft. If Bosch UK's 2.6 m covers the top with both feet planted, that documented range is the top pick. If you already own ONE+ batteries and the measured hedge needs the 2.9 m Ryobi shaft, that bare tool is the alternative. A marketing height that includes your body is not a reason to climb.

Common questions

How high a hedge can I cut from the ground?
There is no universal height, because tools define reach differently and users stand and grip differently. Measure from your firm working position to the top and far edge. Use a documented tool-length or adjustment figure, then require enough margin to keep both feet planted and both hands in control.
Is a 2.4 m pole enough for a 2 m hedge?
It can be, particularly when you can stand close on level ground and the top is not very wide. It is not guaranteed. A raised bed, slope or deep hedge changes the geometry. Check the assembled-tool definition and reproduce the intended grip before relying on the apparent 40 cm margin.
Will a 2.6 m pole trim a 3 m hedge?
Not necessarily. A claim above 2.6 m may add your body height, but the result depends on grip and hedge width. If the manufacturer documents a 3 m cutting height, as Flymo does, assess that wording alongside weight and footing. Otherwise, do not infer 3 m from a 2.6 m shaft.
Why do reviews say a trimmer is shorter than advertised?
The advert may describe user-inclusive reach while the reviewer measures only the assembled tool. Worx claims up to 2.8 m, while reviewers report about 2.6 m. Hyundai's larger 3.6 m claim is also disputed. Compare like with like and favour a clearly defined physical length.
What if the hedge is below a power line?
Stop before extending the tool. If the pole or blade could enter the line's vicinity, do not attempt the cut or estimate clearance yourself. Arrange qualified advice or professional work appropriate to the site. A battery tool is not safe simply because it has no mains cable.
