How to use a telescopic hedge trimmer safely

Updated: October 2026

Learning how to use a telescopic hedge trimmer starts before the blade reaches the hedge. Walk the work area, check the ground, and look for nests, wire and overhead lines. Then set the shortest shaft that reaches while both feet stay planted. Cut the sides before the top, and let the moving blade work rather than forcing it into thick stems. A pole tool is meant to reduce climbing, not to make a powered blade safe on a ladder. Reach, capacity and straps for the current listings are in our [telescopic hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/telescopic-hedge-trimmer).

Before you switch it on

Choose firm, dry footing and keep people and pets clear. Wear eye protection, sturdy footwear and close-fitting clothing. Both hands stay on the trimmer while it runs. Walk both sides for wire, posts and stems beyond the stated capacity, and lop those stems with the trimmer isolated. If an overhead line could be reached, stop. Wild birds, eggs and nests in use are protected. The farm hedgerow closed season is not a blanket summer ban on every garden hedge. If a section is not clearly empty, leave it. For a mains model, Electrical Safety First advises an RCD unless the circuit is already protected. Keep the hedge dry and the lead behind you. The cordless or corded guide is that cable decision.

Set the length, head and strap

Fit the battery only after assembly, or keep a mains tool unplugged while you adjust it. Extend the shaft only as far as a balanced stance needs. Lock each section and check it cannot slide before you remove the blade cover. Set the head with the power isolated. A straighter head usually suits a vertical side. For the top, angle the blade over the upper plane while your hands stay below and in front of you. Do not adjust while the blades are moving. If a strap is supplied, set it so it shares the load without pulling the head off line. It is not a substitute for both hands. Practise releasing the trigger with the power off. Keep a mains cable behind you on the already cut side, and remove the blade cover only when the teeth are clear of you.

Cut the sides, then the top

Start on the side, at the shortest useful shaft, with upward sweeps so cuttings fall away. Move your feet. Do not lean sideways from one spot. A slightly wider base can help light reach lower growth. Do not force a stem that resists. A 16 mm cordless rating is not a pruning saw. Stop, isolate the tool and use loppers. Cut the top only when the sides and the ground are clear. Keep both feet planted, the blade in view, and your hands below the cutting plane. Release the trigger and wait for the blades to stop before you move. Never walk with the blade running. If the far edge makes you lean, work from the other side. The tall-hedge guide is whether the whole top is reachable from the ground.

When to stop

Stop if the blade jams, a shaft lock moves, the sound changes, or control slips. Release the trigger, wait until the blades stop, then remove the battery or isolate the mains supply before you clear the teeth. Rain, a damp connection or a cable in the cutting line ends a mains job. Do not touch a damaged lead while it may be live. A cordless tool has no live lead in the hedge. Stop it anyway when the manual or the footing says so. Leave an active nest alone. Get help if the top is still out of reach from firm ground, the slope spoils your balance, thick branches dominate, or an overhead line is within possible reach. An extendable tool avoids work at height only when it actually finishes the cut from the ground. Afterwards, fit the blade cover. Shaft, gap and kit are in the telescopic hedge trimmer buying guide.

The sequence in one pass

If the ground is uneven, the nest is occupied, or a cable could enter the cut, do not start. If the shortest locked shaft still makes you lean, the tool is too short for that hedge. Cut the sides, then the top, and isolate the power before you clear a jam. A ladder is the point at which this method has already failed.

Common questions

Should I cut the top or the sides first?
Cut the sides first with controlled upward passes, then angle the head for shallow passes across the top. This sequence keeps the side profile visible and reduces the temptation to stand beneath falling clippings. Move your feet between sections instead of leaning sideways from one position.
Can I use a telescopic hedge trimmer on a ladder?
No. A pole trimmer should let you work from firm ground with both hands on the tool. A ladder combines unstable footing with a moving blade and the leverage of an extended shaft. If the top remains out of reach, use an appropriate professional service or a properly assessed alternative.
What should I do if the blade jams?
Release the trigger and wait for the blades to stop. Remove the battery, or unplug and isolate the mains supply, before touching the cutting head. Clear the obstruction only as the manual permits. If a branch exceeds the stated capacity, use suitable loppers instead of forcing another pass.
Can I trim a damp hedge?
Do not use a mains hedge trimmer in rain or where the hedge, connections or cable create an electrical risk. Follow the manual for a cordless model as well. Battery power does not cancel weather limits or poor footing. Postpone the job if conditions are uncertain.
What should I do if I find a nest?
Stop cutting and move away without disturbing it. Wild birds, eggs and nests in use are protected in the UK. Leave the occupied section uncut and seek guidance if necessary. Do not assume a quiet moment means the nest is abandoned, and do not cut closer to confirm.
