How to choose a telescopic hedge trimmer

Updated: October 2026

Before you choose a telescopic hedge trimmer, measure the hedge and look at the stems rather than starting with star ratings. A listing may call the pole 2.6 m, claim a greater reach by adding your height, or omit the definition. The battery may also be missing from a price that looks competitive. Shortlist the shortest shaft that reaches from firm ground, then the tooth gap, the complete kit and the weight you must control. Those fields for twelve amazon.co.uk listings are in our [telescopic hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/telescopic-hedge-trimmer).

What the reach figure actually measures

Reach can mean the assembled tool, its adjustment range, or a height that includes the user. Those figures are not interchangeable. Bosch UK gives the UniversalHedgePole 18 a range of 210–260 cm. Hyundai states a 2.6 m pole and also claims up to 3.6 m, but a UK reviewer says the larger figure is not achieved at waist height. Measure from the ground where you will stand to the top and the far edge. A 2.4 m MZK may suit a hedge around 2 m if you can stand close on level ground. Grip, head angle, width and slope still change the result. POSENPRO states a 2.11–2.67 m pole and also about 4.5 m with the user included. Ryobi states a 2.9 m tool and markets it for hedges over 4 m. If the last part needs tiptoeing or climbing, the pole is too short. The guide for tall hedges takes the height decision further.

Match the tooth gap to the growth

Blade length is how much face each pass covers. Tooth gap is which stems the tool is meant to admit. Most cordless models here specify 14–18 mm, which suits privet, light conifer and similar annual growth if the stems actually fit. A 57 cm blade does not compensate for teeth that are too fine for old wood. The corded Flymo lists a 25 mm gap, and a highlight also says branches up to 22 mm. The corded BlueMars lists 20 mm spacing. Wider figures can suit denser growth. They do not promise every hard stem of that diameter will cut cleanly. Take oversize stems with loppers first. Amazon's Bosch table printed 43 inches, while Bosch UK specifies 43 cm. One MZK ASIN says 57 cm in the title and 46 cm in the table. Do not pick the larger number. The best telescopic hedge trimmer picks favour specifications you can document.

Kit, voltage and weight are one decision

See what is in the box before you compare prices. The £106 Ryobi OPT1845 excludes the battery and charger. The £79.99 MZK kit includes two 4.0 Ah batteries and a charger. The £57.99 BlueMars includes one 2.0 Ah pack. Voltage does not rank the cut by itself. If a socket is convenient, the cordless or corded guide sets runtime against cable risk. Weight matters more as the shaft extends. One BlueMars prints both 3 kg and 4.03 kg. Bosch UK gives 3.6 kg and Amazon 4.12 kg. A strap shares load. It does not replace two hands.

How to use the comparison table

Filter in a fixed order: reach from safe footing, then cutting capacity against stems you measured, then the power kit, then weight. Head angle does not rescue a shaft that is too short. October 2026 captured prices ran from roughly £58–£80, then about £83–£110, then £130–£149. Use review volume to test the shortlist. A 4.5-star average from 15 ratings should not outweigh a documented specification and hundreds of owners.

The order that keeps the shortlist honest

If the shaft cannot reach from firm ground, stop there. If the tooth gap is finer than the stems you must cut, a longer blade will not fix it. If the price excludes the battery, add that cost before you compare it with a complete kit. The three models in the table show those three traps: a documented 2.6 m Bosch kit, a two-battery MZK at 2.4 m, and a longer Ryobi sold bare.

Common questions

Is the reach in the title the pole length or the hedge height?
It may be either, and some listings do not define it. Look for an adjustment range or assembled-tool length on the UK manufacturer page. If a larger number includes the operator's height, treat it as an estimate. Measure your hedge and choose a tool that works without leaning or climbing.
What tooth gap do I need for privet?
Regular soft privet growth often falls within the 14–18 mm capacities stated by cordless tools in this set, but you should measure actual stems rather than rely on the species name. Old, hard branches can exceed the tool's practical ability even when their diameter appears close to the quoted gap.
Does the price include a battery and charger?
Not always. The Ryobi OPT1845 capture is a bare tool, whereas Bosch, MZK and several budget models include a power kit. Read the included-components line and calculate the cost of a compatible battery and charger before comparing prices. Existing platform owners face a different value calculation.
Do I need a shoulder strap?
A strap is useful on an extended tool, particularly for a longer session, but it does not replace a two-handed grip. POSENPRO does not list one. Several BlueMars, Worx, Hyundai and Ryobi packages do. Stop if the tool remains difficult to control.
Why does one listing show two weights or blade lengths?
Marketplace pages can combine incorrect table cells, seller copy and variant data. Where Bosch Amazon says 43 inches but Bosch UK says 43 cm, the manufacturer specification is the credible reference. If the maker does not resolve a conflict, treat the uncertainty as a buying disadvantage rather than guessing.
