Petrol or battery hedge trimmer: which shop to use

Updated: October 2026

You want the STIHL HS 45 petrol experience, or you want to know whether a cordless tool from amazon.co.uk does the same job. This set, checked on 15 October 2026, is ten cordless tools and one corded pole. There is no STIHL petrol ASIN. Choose a cordless kit for one garden hedge and no fuel store. Choose a dealer HS 45 for 30 mm spacing and refuelling. Fuel is not on the [Stihl hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/stihl-hedge-trimmer) table. Written on 16 October 2026 from the listings, STIHL UK and one dealer snapshot, without a lab test. Amazon links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

This Amazon list is battery, plus one cable

Ten of the eleven listings are cordless, from the Flymo kit at £41.99 to the Bosch pole at £149. Tool-only bodies are the DeWalt 20 cm at £93.95, the Ryobi OPT1845 at £106 and the DeWalt 60 cm at £199. The SuperHandy at £99.99 is mains, 550 W, stated reach 2.7 m. None of these is a STIHL. If you need to refuel and keep cutting, leave this list for an authorised dealer. One Saturday on a small hedge, with no petrol can, can stay here. Tooth gap, and whether a battery is in the box, is the Stihl hedge trimmer buying guide.

What you gain and lose with a battery

A battery kit starts when you press the switch. The limit is the charge. The MZK title says two 4.0 Ah batteries. Worx and Hyundai include 2.0 Ah, the Bosch handheld 2.5 Ah, the AdvancedShear 2.0 Ah. The Bosch pole does not state an amp-hour. XR, ONE+, POWER FOR ALL, PowerShare and STIHL AK packs do not interchange. The £199 DeWalt 60 cm still needs an XR battery. The £106 Ryobi pole still needs a ONE+ pack. When the day outgrows a charge, the next machine is the HS 45.

The HS 45 is petrol from a dealer

The HS 45 is STIHL's entry petrol hedge trimmer: 2-MIX, 27.2 cm³, 0.75 kW, double-sided blades in 45 cm or 60 cm, and 30 mm tooth spacing. Just Lawnmowers had it at £279 on 16 October 2026. That is one snapshot, not an amazon.co.uk price. Fuel is a two-stroke mix or STIHL MotoMix, never straight petrol. World of Power states 50:1, 100 ml of oil to 5 litres, and about 30 days for an E10 mix. Gayways has published handle vibration around 9.0 and 10.0 m/s², which is a machine figure, not an HSE daily A(8). The battery STIHL in the same channel is the HSA 50: AK, 36 V, branches up to 18 mm, about 2.9 kg, up to 50 minutes on an AK 10. Just Lawnmowers listed the body at £124 on 16 October 2026, without the AK battery. Thirty millimetres is the HS 45 spacing, not the HSA 50. None of these is in the Amazon eleven.

Which one to choose

Choose an Amazon cordless kit for one household hedge, no petrol store, and a tooth gap that matches this year's growth. The Flymo at £41.99 is the best value when the growth is thin. The Bosch UniversalHedgeCut at £139.94 is the top pick here for 20 mm spacing and a 2.5 Ah pack. Choose the HS 45 when you want 30 mm spacing and you would rather refuel than wait on a charger. Choose the HSA 50 when you will buy the AK pack with the body. Choose neither from a ladder, and neither above the stated reach. That limit is the hedge trimmers for tall hedges page. The SuperHandy is the mains pole in between: 550 W, a 10 m cable, 11 reviews.

Common questions

Can I buy the STIHL HS 45 on amazon.co.uk in this comparison?
Not as one of these eleven ASINs. The set is cordless tools plus the corded SuperHandy. The HS 45 is a petrol machine from an authorised STIHL dealer. Just Lawnmowers listed it at £279 on 16 October 2026, and that figure is not an Amazon shelf price.
When is petrol the better choice than a cordless kit?
Petrol is the better choice when you want 30 mm tooth spacing and you want to refuel and carry on. A cordless kit from this set fits one garden hedge, soft growth around 12-20 mm, and no fuel can in the shed. A missed year that needs about 25 mm is the DeWalt 60 cm only if you already own an XR battery.
What fuel does the HS 45 actually take?
It takes a two-stroke mix or STIHL MotoMix, not neat petrol. World of Power states 50:1, which is 100 ml of oil to 5 litres, and treats an E10 mix as short-lived fuel. Buying MotoMix with the tool at an approved dealer can move the domestic warranty from 2 years to 3 years.
Is a £124 HSA 50 body ready to cut?
No. Just Lawnmowers' £124 on 16 October 2026 is the body. The AK battery and charger are separate, and an AK pack does not fit DeWalt, Ryobi, Bosch or Worx tools. STIHL says up to 50 minutes on an AK 10. Price the pack before you compare £124 with a Flymo kit at £41.99.
Do STIHL AK batteries fit DeWalt, Ryobi or Bosch?
They do not. AK, AS and AP packs do not interchange with each other, and they do not fit XR, ONE+, POWER FOR ALL or PowerShare. Buying a bare DeWalt or Ryobi because you own an AK battery leaves you with a tool you cannot run.
Where does the corded SuperHandy sit between petrol and battery?
It is the mains option in this Amazon list: 550 W, a stated reach of 2.7 m, £99.99, with a cable instead of a fuel can or a battery. Runtime is not limited by a charge, and you cannot take it far from a socket. It had 11 reviews on 15 October 2026, and it is not a substitute for 30 mm tooth spacing.
