Oregon star vs round strimmer line, once the diameter fits

Updated: October 2026

The head already allows the diameter, and you are choosing a shape. Oregon star vs round strimmer line is a feed question as much as a cut question. Round line is the simpler section and the easier eyelet. Star line is five edges, sold as a cleaner cut, and it can be louder and harder to feed. This page names the shape. The [Oregon trimmer line comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/oregon-trimmer-line) holds the eleven amazon.co.uk files. Prices are the shelf figures from those listings. Peter F. did not meter noise or run a cut test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What Oregon means by round and star

Oregon's catalogue gives round a simple cut, star a clean cut, and square or toothed profiles denser growth. That is the maker's map. It is not a noise figure, and it is not a promise that every eyelet will pass a five-edge section of the same millimetre size. The catalogue benefit arrives only if the line feeds. Try a short offcut in the eyelet before you wind 90 m. If the five-edge section snags, the round line of that same stamp is the one that will bump. Yourspares and PGT both describe a shape the eyelet will not pass.

Noise and drag

One UK review of the 90 m star, part 104883E, says the cut was cleaner than the DeWalt line it replaced and the trimmer was substantially louder. That is a review, not a sound-level meter. Screwfix lists Oregon Nylium Silencio, 2.4 mm by 87 m, at about £24.99 including VAT, with the sentence up to 10 percent less noise than traditional square and round lines on an aerodynamic round profile. That pack is not one of the eleven ASINs here. The thin round doughnut in this set, part 800001, carries its own bullets of up to 10 percent less noise and up to 25 percent longer run time. This comparison did not measure either figure. Pages that say star is always quieter are not supported by the review that went the other way on 104883E.

Aluminium particles, and which pack is which shape

Oregon's GB page for part 104883E, the 2.4 mm star by 90 m, describes five edges and aluminium particles that resist welding, and about 520 g packaged. Amazon's weight cell on the same part says 60 g. The 212 m star, part 69-461-Y, describes five edges and nylon, and its bullets do not repeat the aluminium sentence. Reviews of 104883E still include melting inside a bump head, so the wording is not a guarantee that a tight spool will stay unfused. Part 110985E, about £7.89 for 15 m, is titled star at 2.4 mm, and a review in that file calls it square. If you need five edges whose Oregon page agrees, that is 104883E at 90 m. Round, for an easier feed at 2.4 mm, is the orange doughnut at about £5.99 for 15 m. Choose round when the eyelet is tight or you are edging. Choose star when the eyelet passes it and you can accept the louder review on 104883E. Metres, once the shape is chosen, go back to best Oregon trimmer line.

Star does not replace a blade

Five edges are still nylon. HSE's brushcutter bulletin keeps nylon strimmers and single-piece metal blades inside EN ISO 11806, and it does not treat a five-edge cord as a brush knife. Brambles, reeds and saplings are the job a cord head is often the wrong tool for. Dual-material round, part 106504E at about £36.47 for 3.0 mm by 120 m, is a different product: an anti-weld skin on the bullets, not star line. A 15 m star and a 90 m star are the same profile at two commitments of metres. If the stamp was never the starting point, use the Oregon trimmer line buying guide.

Common questions

Does star cut cleaner than round?
Oregon's catalogue gives star a clean cut and round a simple cut. One UK review of part 104883E says the cut was cleaner than the DeWalt line it replaced, and that the trimmer was substantially louder. The same file includes snaps on nettles and melting in a bump head. The cleaner cut arrives only if the eyelet lets the five edges out.
Is star quieter?
That same 104883E review calls the machine louder, so a claim that star is quieter is not supported here. Silencio's up to 10 percent less noise line is a different Screwfix pack, 2.4 mm by 87 m at about £24.99, and it is not one of these eleven ASINs. Part 800001's noise bullet is also unmeasured. There is no sound-level meter in these sources.
Will star pass a bump-feed eyelet?
Only if the eyelet will pass a five-edge section at the stamped diameter. Try a short offcut before you wind a reel. If it snags, the orange round doughnut at about £5.99 is the 2.4 mm line more likely to bump. Forcing the star through is the jam repair notes describe when the section is less willing than the hole.
Is 110985E square?
The title is star, 2.4 mm by 15 m, part 110985E, at about £7.89. A review calls the section square, and some texts mention a thinner gauge. Both stay in the file. If you need a five-edge line whose Oregon page agrees, that is 104883E at 90 m. Nylium's aluminium wording on that part is a welding claim, and reviews still include melting in a bump head.
Does star replace a blade?
Five edges are still nylon. HSE treats a nylon strimmer and a single-piece metal blade as different attachments under EN ISO 11806. Plain round is the better buy when the eyelet is tight or you are only edging. Star that melts in a polycut head is the wrong head, not a reason to buy a longer star reel.
