Oregon strimmer line for thick weeds, and where nylon stops

Updated: October 2026

The grass at the fence line is past a tidy edge, and 2.4 mm is shredding on stalks. Oregon strimmer line for thick weeds is still nylon. Step up in diameter only when the head allows it. The serrated 4 mm doughnut is a cord for a named head, not a stand-in for a metal blade. This page is that limit. It does not rank the lawn doughnuts or teach a full wind. The [Oregon trimmer line comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/oregon-trimmer-line) holds the eleven listings. Prices are amazon.co.uk figures from those listings. 3 mm only if the head says so

Three packs are 3.0 mm. Part 69-368-YE is a yellow round doughnut, about £7.79 for 15 m, on a shared review pool. Use it as a short trial when the head allows 3.0 mm. Part 106504E is dual-material round, 3.0 mm by 120 m at about £36.47, with 4.5 from 952. Reviews that say Duoline mention bracken, and others mention snaps on wet grass. Use it when welding has been the failure and the head allows 3.0 mm. Part 69-461-Y is star line, 3.0 mm by 212 m at about £37.60, with 4.4 from 754. One review reports melting on a Stihl 560 polycut head. If the head stops at 3.0 mm, 4 mm serrated line is a different holder.

What 111085E is

Part 111085E is serrated nylon, 4.0 mm by 21 m, at about £27.57, with 4.3 from 1,986. About £1.31 a stated metre is the dearest rate in the set. Bullets claim up to 30 percent more durability, and that percentage was not measured here. Oregon's UK page for the longer FlexiBlade spool, part 111091E, 4.0 mm by 110 m, describes brambles and undergrowth, a melting point stated above 265 °C, and Jet-Fit heads 111110 and 111111. That 110 m spool is not this doughnut. A UK tool shop uses those two head numbers for 111085E. The amazon bullet lists other brands. The brand list does not override the Jet-Fit sentence or your manual. A domestic bump head marked 2.4 mm is the wrong holder.

What users reported

Reviewers who had the right holder describe brambles and thick grass. Others call the cord brittle, too stiff to load, or useless in a head never meant for 4 mm. One comment cites suckers up to about 8 mm. That is a reviewer's plant, not a rated capacity. A note that loading less avoids a jam belongs to this stiff cord, which is why how to load Oregon trimmer line keeps it as a 4 mm review, not a volume for every spool. If the reviews have split, the stop is the manual, not a longer FlexiBlade reel.

When nylon is the wrong tool

HSE's brushcutter bulletin points at EN ISO 11806 for nylon strimmers and single-piece metal blades. A cord head is for grass, nettles and soft growth. A brush knife, when the manual allows one, is for brambles, reeds and saplings. Four millimetres serrated is for a Jet-Fit or other head the manual names, on growth that is still a line job. Woody stems, a cracked guard, or a harness you have not used with a blade are the point where you stop. STIHL UK's advice for grass trimmers is glasses and a visor together. A nest in use is protected. Paid work sits under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and PUWER 1998. If you have not used a brushcutter blade, a contractor is the safer next step than using this doughnut as a substitute knife. If the stamp was never read, the Oregon trimmer line buying guide is the first check.

Common questions

Will 3 mm cut thick weeds the 2.4 mm line would not?
Only if the head is stamped for 3.0 mm. The about £7.79 doughnut is a 15 m trial on a shared review pool. The about £36.47 dual-material reel is the long option when welding has been the failure, with bracken praise and wet-grass snaps in the same file. The about £37.60 star is the long five-edge reel, and one review melted it in a Stihl 560 polycut head. Thicker than the stamp still jams.
Is FlexiBlade a blade?
Part 111085E is serrated nylon, 4.0 mm by 21 m. Oregon's page for the longer 111091E spool describes brambles and a melting point above 265 °C, and it still says to check the manual. HSE treats nylon line and a single-piece metal blade as different tools. Ripon's metal heads only is a shop sentence about the holder. The name does not add a knife the manual omitted.
Which head is 111085E described for?
Oregon's page for FlexiBlade 111091E names Jet-Fit heads 111110 and 111111. A UK tool shop uses those two numbers for 111085E. The amazon bullet lists other brands, including Stihl and Bosch. That list disagrees with the Jet-Fit sentence. A 2.4 mm bump head is outside the family page even if a logo appears on the bullet.
What did reviewers actually report?
Holders that match the cord show brambles and thick grass. Other reviews call it brittle, too stiff to load, or useless in the wrong head. One mentions suckers up to about 8 mm, which is that reviewer's plant, not a rated capacity. Another says it snapped after soaking. The 4.3 from 1,986 does not remove the Jet-Fit limit.
When do I stop and use a blade or a contractor?
Stop when the growth is woody, the guard is cracked, or the manual's blade needs a harness you have not used. Walk the patch first. A nest in use is protected. Glasses and a visor together are STIHL UK's PPE line for this tool. Paid work with no trimmer training sits under PUWER. The 21 m doughnut does not close that gap.
