Oregon strimmer line size: match the head before the brand

Updated: October 2026

You already want Oregon trimmer line, and the basket is full of yellow doughnuts that look alike. The Oregon strimmer line size that will feed is the maximum on your head, not the logo on the packet. After that you choose a profile the eyelet will pass, then a length you will finish. This page is that order. The [Oregon trimmer line comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/oregon-trimmer-line) sets the eleven amazon.co.uk packs side by side. Prices are the shelf figures from those listings. Peter F. checked the listings and public UK sources. There was no lab cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The number on the head

Start with the stamp on the spool housing or the figure in the machine manual. In this set the stated diameters run from a 1.6 mm class doughnut through 2.0 mm, 2.4 mm, 2.7 mm, 3.0 mm, 3.5 mm and 4.0 mm. Those numbers are not interchangeable. A cordless head that left the factory with about 1.6 mm will bind if you force 3.5 mm or 4.0 mm through the eyelet. PGT Repairs describes 3 mm loaded into a head marked 2.4 mm. Line thicker than the design jams the feed. The only light-gauge Oregon doughnut here is part 800001, about £8.69 for 15 m. The title says 1.65 mm and the size field says 1.6 mm, so check the stamp before you rely on either figure. The shape still has to pass the eyelet.

Yellow round, Nylium star, dual material, serrated

A legal diameter can still jam if the profile is the wrong shape. Oregon's catalogue gives round a simple cut, star a cleaner cut, and square or toothed profiles denser growth. Plain round line in this set is copolymer: 2.0 mm by 127 m, part 69-358-Y, at about £16.07; an orange 2.4 mm doughnut at about £5.99; and a red 2.7 mm reel at about £16.85. Nylium star, parts 104883E and 110985E, is the five-edge line Oregon describes with aluminium particles that resist welding. The 90 m black star is about £25.76. The 15 m star doughnut is about £7.89. Dual-material round is part 106504E, 3.0 mm by 120 m at about £36.47, with an anti-weld claim that is a listing sentence. Serrated FlexiBlade, part 111085E, is 4.0 mm by 21 m at about £27.57, and a UK tool shop limits it to Jet-Fit heads 111110 and 111111. Shape, once the diameter is legal, stays on star or round Oregon trimmer line.

Fifteen metres or a season reel

A 15 m doughnut is a trial. Short packs here sit between about £5.99 and about £8.69. Seventy to 127 metres suits a season if the diameter matches. The 2.0 mm reel at about £16.07 is about 13p a stated metre, the lowest rate in the set. The serrated 21 m doughnut is about £1.31 a stated metre, the dearest. Pence per metre only counts when the head will take that diameter. Winding, equal tails and a soak for dried nylon are a different job, on how to load Oregon trimmer line.

What the listing is not allowed to decide

A bullet that names Stihl or Husqvarna does not certify the head. Brand lists are the seller's list. Up to 10 percent and up to 30 percent on the bullets were not measured here. Ignore RPM, power source and a cutting width. Those cells describe a machine. When the head, the profile and the metres agree, a conditional pick is on best Oregon trimmer line. If the growth is bramble and the manual allows 3 mm to 4 mm, nylon still stops where the manual's blade starts.

Common questions

What diameter does my head allow?
Read the stamp on the head or the maximum in the manual. Oregon's range, from 1.6 mm up to 6.0 mm, is the catalogue, not permission for your machine. Two 109 mm heads can still disagree: a Tower Tools note puts Lightning Load 559060 up to 3.0 mm, and a reseller listing puts 539138 at 2.4 mm. An unmarked shell is a reason to open the manual.
Is Nylium the same as yellow round line?
Nylium here is the star line on parts 104883E and 110985E, with five edges and aluminium particles sold against welding. Yellow round, such as 69-358-Y at 2.0 mm, is plain copolymer. The 212 m star describes five edges and nylon, and its bullets skip the aluminium sentence. Dual-material 106504E is a third family.
Will 2.4 mm fit a cordless trimmer that came with 1.6 mm?
Only if that head is stamped for 2.4 mm. The cord in the box is a clue. The maximum on the housing is the rule. Forcing 2.4 mm through a 1.6 mm eyelet is the jam PGT and Yourspares describe. The short refill in this set for a 1.6 mm class head is part 800001 at about £8.69, title 1.65 mm, size field 1.6 mm.
Why do several packs show the same stars?
The saved listings share pools. About 4.3 from 14,156 sits on three round ASINs. 4.6 from 4,712 sits on both the 2.0 mm and the 3.5 mm yellow reels. Part 104883E is the exception in this set: 4.5 from 1,447 on that listing. A borrowed count does not make a 15 m doughnut a tested season reel.
Can I ignore the RPM and gas-powered cells?
Those cells, and a cutting width of 42 cm or 46 cm, describe a machine. Plan from the title diameter, the title length, and a part number that agrees. The 60 g cell on 104883E disagrees with about 520 g on Oregon's page, so that cell is not a coil weight. A brand list on a bullet is the seller's list, not a fit certificate.
